To level up a Sprite in Fortnite, equip it and earn Sprite XP in a match by opening chests and other containers, downing and eliminating opponents, and extracting Sprites. Five levels take a Sprite to its max, and the progress only sticks once you extract it, so every leveling run should end at an Extraction Site or with a Portable Extractor.
Below we cover where Sprite XP comes from, how to bank it, the Sprites that follow their own rules, and the weekly events that double the rate.
Which Season This Covers
This guide covers Chapter 7 Season 4, Fortnite Override, as of the v42.20 update in September 2026. Sprites are seasonal content that rotates: Override brought in a whole new generation, and the Season 3 (Runners) Sprites moved to the new Sprite Garden instead of staying in Battle Royale. The community wiki lists Override as running until October 31, 2026, so check the current season before relying on anything below.
Leveling works the same way on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and mobile, in both Battle Royale and Zero Build.
Where Sprite XP Comes From
Epic’s patch notes name three ways to level a Sprite: exploration (finding and opening Chests), eliminations (downing and eliminating opponents) and extraction. Per the community wiki, the XP goes to the Sprite equipped in your dedicated Sprite slot, not to spares you carry in your inventory, and its current table breaks it down like this:
| Action | Sprite XP |
|---|---|
| Open a container (chests, ammo boxes) | 75 |
| Assist an elimination | 75 |
| Down an opponent | 100 |
| Extract a Sprite | 100 and up, scaling with rarity, variant and level |
| Eliminate an opponent | 200 |
| Open a Cheat Code | 85 (Rare), 100 (Epic), 120 (Legendary) |
The same wiki puts each level at 550 XP, or 2,750 XP to go from Level 1 to Level 5, and says the XP is shared across your squad. Fights are the fastest source, but a looting route through a chest-heavy area adds up steadily and is far safer when the Sprite you are leveling is a rare one. Cheat Codes are worth chasing twice over, since each one pays XP and can drop a new Sprite.
Bank Your Levels by Extracting
Levels earned in a match are not safe until the Sprite is extracted. Epic’s notes say that if you are eliminated before banking a Sprite, it is left on the battlefield for the next player to steal, and the community wiki adds that whoever picks it up keeps its levels. So the loop is simple: earn XP, then extract before you take a risky fight. Extraction Sites are marked on the map, and the Portable Extractor Gizmo banks your equipped Sprite from anywhere.
Two changes in the v42.10 update made the grind friendlier:
- Duplicates feed your collection. When you extract a Sprite you already own, its XP goes to the copy in your collection. Once that copy is maxed, drop in with it and extract it to master it.
- Mastered Sprites cost half. Resummoning a mastered Sprite from the lobby now costs half the usual Sprite Dust.
Extracting a Sprite at Level 5 is what masters it, and mastery feeds the season’s Sprite Mastery track of rewards and Gizmos.
Sprites With Their Own Leveling Rules
A few Override Sprites ignore the normal XP sources, per Epic’s patch notes and help center:
- Klombo Sprite: levels only when you use consumables that restore Health or Shield. The community wiki says the XP scales with what the item actually restores, so healing at full health earns nothing.
- Crown Sprite: levels only by winning matches, and grants extra Crown Wins after a Victory Royale.
- Bounty Hunter variants: arrived September 24, appear when you eliminate opponents, and level only from eliminations.
- Adventure and Klombo at Level 5: Epic’s help center says these consume themselves at max level, extract automatically and return to Level 1, while the mastery stays recorded in your Sprite Mastery tab.
If you are carrying a Klombo, save your Shield Potions and fish for moments when you are actually damaged. For the Crown Sprite, there is no shortcut: it is a trophy for players who win.
Events That Speed Up Leveling
Epic runs recurring events all season, and planning your Sprite sessions around them is the biggest time saver:
- Mastery Mondays: back since September 7. Epic’s weekly schedule listed them as double Sprite Dust and XP, and the original Runners version ran each Monday from 9 AM ET to 9 AM ET the next day.
- Power Hours: Saturday windows (2 to 4 PM ET and 9 to 11 PM ET) that boost certain variants and let 1-Up Tokens and Portable Extractors drop from chests. The Kingdom Hearts crossover weekend was one of them, with everyone dropping in holding the Kingdom Key.
- New Sprite days: new Sprites and variants tend to land on Thursdays, and each new one is a fresh Sprite to level.
Seasonal events can reshape the island too. Fortnitemares begins October 1, and our look at what its key art teases covers what Epic has confirmed so far. If you are also working through the season’s story, the Geno questline includes a Sprite extraction step, covered in our Geno walkthrough. Two places to skip: Sprites were vaulted in Ranked Battle Royale on August 28, and bot lobbies pay far less XP. For the rest of our coverage, see every Fortnite guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many levels does a Sprite have? Five. Extracting a Sprite once it reaches Level 5 masters it.
Can you level up Sprites in bot lobbies? Yes, but slowly. The community wiki lists Sprite XP in bot lobbies at roughly a quarter of the normal amounts.
Do Sprites level up in Ranked? No. Epic vaulted Sprites in Ranked Battle Royale on August 28 while it evaluates whether they belong in the Ranked loot pool.
Why did my Klombo or Adventure Sprite go back to Level 1? That is intended. Both extract themselves at Level 5 and reset, and Epic’s help center says the mastery is kept.
Can you still level Season 3 Sprites? Not in Battle Royale right now. Runners Sprites live on in the Sprite Garden and your collection, and Epic has said past generations may return later.
