25 Best GTA 4 Mods (2026)

Official GTA 4 artwork

The best GTA 4 mods in 2026 start with a stack of community fixes that repair Grand Theft Auto IV on PC, then build out into sharper textures, better gunplay and a busier Liberty City. The 25 below are single-player mods for Grand Theft Auto IV: The Complete Edition on PC, grouped by what they change, from the essential fixes nearly every modded install starts with to trainers and chaos. We checked every entry against its creator’s own page (Nexus Mods, GitHub, LCPDFR.com or the creator’s site) on September 21, 2026, and each one is free.

The version you own matters more in GTA 4 than in almost any other game. Since 2020, Steam and the Rockstar Games Launcher have sold only the Complete Edition (the 1.2.x series of patches), which bundles the two Episodes from Liberty City. A large share of the game’s classic mods were written for the older 1.0.7.0 and 1.0.8.0 patches, so they need either a compatibility patch or a downgrade, and each entry below says which. Our advice: install FusionFix first, because its “update” folder lets most other mods load without overwriting the game’s own files. Everything here also stays inside the lines of Rockstar’s mod guidelines: single-player, non-commercial, nothing that touches online play. For the rest of the series, our GTA guides hub has every guide we have written.

Essential Fixes for the Complete Edition

These are the mods most GTA 4 players install before anything else. Together they fix the PC port’s long list of broken shaders, frame-rate bugs and missing content.

FusionFix mod for GTA 4 by ThirteenAG and the Fusion Team

1. FusionFix

FusionFix is the single most important GTA 4 mod. It fixes dozens of the PC port’s broken effects (shadows, soft particles, emissive lights, rain, mirror reflections) and frame-rate bugs, including cutscene judder at high frame rates. It also adds real in-game menu options: SMAA or FXAA, volumetric fog, sun shafts, a DirectX 9 or Vulkan toggle, built-in Project2DFX distant lights and a Skip Intro switch. Version 5.0.1 shipped in May 2026. Creator: ThirteenAG and the Fusion Team. Download: FusionFix on GitHub.

Various Fixes mod for GTA 4 by Attramet and Valentyn_L

2. Various Fixes

Where FusionFix repairs the engine, Various Fixes repairs the world. It corrects a large number of models with the wrong materials (objects that cast no shadow or reflect when they should not), broken LODs and missing textures across Liberty City, and it restores console-version assets that looked better on PS3 and Xbox 360. Optional extras include working pedestrian traffic lights. Version 2.3 landed on September 14, 2026. Creator: Attramet and Valentyn_L. Download: Various Fixes on Nexus Mods.

DXVK GPLAsync and Shader Cache mod for GTA 4 by ValentynL and Ph42oN

3. DXVK GPLAsync and Shader Cache

GTA 4’s DirectX 9 renderer is notoriously CPU-bound, which is where most of its stutter comes from. DXVK translates those calls to Vulkan, and this build adds asynchronous shader compilation plus a pre-built shader cache, so the first-time hitches its page describes mostly disappear. FusionFix already offers a basic Vulkan toggle through DXVK; this package is the version players install when they want the async build and cache. Creator: ValentynL and Ph42oN. Download: DXVK GPLAsync and Shader Cache on Nexus Mods.

4. Radio Downgrader (Radio Restoration Mod)

In 2018 a batch of licensed songs expired and disappeared from GTA 4’s radio stations. This tool, usually called the Radio Downgrader, patches them back into the Complete Edition without downgrading the whole game. Its installer lets you keep only the original tracks or mix them with the replacements Rockstar added. Its guide warns it will not work on a game you have already downgraded. Creator: Tomasak (GTA Downgraders). Download: Radio Restoration Mod on GitHub.

5. Compatibility Patch for GTA IV: Complete Edition

Many classic script mods rely on ScriptHook and ScriptHookDotNet, which broke when the Complete Edition arrived. This patch updates those hooks (its aCompleteEditionHook.asi fixes the C++ ScriptHook) so older script mods, including LCPDFR and several trainers, run on the current version. You still need the original C++ ScriptHook, and its author is upfront that some features stay disabled and that no support is offered. Creator: LMS. Download: Compatibility Patch on LCPDFR.com.

Downgrading for Classic Mods

Some of GTA 4’s best-loved mods only run on the old 1.0.7.0 or 1.0.8.0 patches. These two tools are how the community gets there, legally, from a copy you own.

GTA IV Downgrader mod for GTA 4 by ItsClonkAndre

6. GTA IV Downgrader

The GTA IV Downgrader turns a Steam or Rockstar Games Launcher copy (version 1.2.0.30 and up) into 1.0.8.0, 1.0.7.0 or 1.0.4.0, step by step, from a simple app. It does not delete your save files, and it can install common mods as part of the process. Run it from its own folder, not from inside the game directory. Creator: ItsClonkAndre. Needs: .NET Framework 4.8. Download: GTA IV Downgrader on Nexus Mods.

ZolikaPatch mod for GTA 4 by Zolika1351

7. ZolikaPatch

ZolikaPatch is the FusionFix of the downgraded world: a big bundle of fixes for patches 1.0.8.0, 1.0.7.0, 1.0.4.0 and 1.0.0.0. Its page lists restored vehicle shadows in the Booth Tunnel, helicopter spotlights, fixes for cutscene zoom and stutter at high FPS, faster loading and a fix for the VRAM limit on older patches. If it finds an unsupported version, it offers to patch the game for you. Creator: Zolika1351. Download: ZolikaPatch on Zolika1351’s Zone.

Visuals and Textures

These keep GTA 4’s gritty 2008 look but sharpen it, and several were made to work directly with FusionFix.

Console Visuals mod for GTA 4 by Tomasak and contributors

8. Console Visuals

The PC port quietly changed a lot of assets compared with the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions: vegetation, clothing, animations, fences, pedestrians and loading screens. Console Visuals restores that console content, with console HUD sizing as an option and The Ballad of Gay Tony’s HUD colors included. It is a community project with a long credits list, and release 2.1 arrived in May 2026. Creator: Tomasak and contributors. Needs: FusionFix. Download: Console Visuals on GitHub.

Higher Resolution Vehicle Pack mod for GTA 4 by Ash_735

9. Higher Resolution Vehicle Pack

This pack upgrades the textures of every vehicle in the game, using higher-resolution sources from Max Payne 3, GTA 5 and original assets, with cleanup and color correction so nothing looks out of place. The 15th Anniversary Edition adds a new license plate system with special plates for police, taxis and bikes. FusionFix users extract the Complete Edition version into the update folder and raise the vehicle budget, per its page. Creator: Ash_735. Needs: FusionFix, or OpenIV for the manual install. Download: Higher Resolution Vehicle Pack on Nexus Mods.

Higher Resolution Miscellaneous Pack mod for GTA 4 by Ash_735

10. Higher Resolution Miscellaneous Pack

Most HD texture packs skip the small stuff, and this one exists to fill that gap. It upgrades cutscene props across all three stories, minigames like bowling and pool, pedestrian props, trash, generic props and interiors, with a heavy focus on The Ballad of Gay Tony. It is split into categories so you can leave out anything that clashes with other mods. Version 3.1 arrived on September 7, 2026. Creator: Ash_735. Needs: FusionFix. Download: Higher Resolution Miscellaneous Pack on Nexus Mods.

HQ Vanilla Textures City Revitalization mod for GTA 4 by The Wil

11. HQ Vanilla Textures City Revitalization

Rather than swapping in new materials, this mod rebuilds Liberty City’s own textures at higher definition, using AI enhancement methods chosen per texture type. The point is a sharper city that still looks exactly like GTA 4. Its author says it is fully compatible with FusionFix and DXVK, and recommends replacing the original files rather than using the update folder to avoid streaming delays. Creator: The Wil. Download: HQ Vanilla Textures City Revitalization on Nexus Mods.

DayL's Natural Timecycle mod for GTA 4 by DayL

12. DayL’s Natural Timecycle

GTA 4’s famous grey-brown haze is a deliberate choice, but plenty of players find it too dark. DayL’s Natural Timecycle makes the lighting more natural and vibrant using only timecycle edits, with no ENB or ReShade, so it runs about as well as the vanilla game. It works on every patch and the episodes, and its creator recommends pairing it with FusionFix. Do not combine it with other graphics mods. Creator: DayL. Download: DayL’s Natural Timecycle on Nexus Mods.

Solitude 3 mod for GTA 4 by Chunk

13. Solitude 3

Solitude 3 is the other timecycle worth knowing, and a pick-one alternative to DayL’s. Built from scratch, it aims for a slightly more realistic but still stylized Liberty City, with careful transitions between weather presets so every weather feels distinct. Its page lists full support for FusionFix 5.x, including volumetric fog and console gamma. Creator: Chunk. Needs: FusionFix. Download: Solitude 3 on Nexus Mods.

N.U.R.P. (Niko Upscaled and Retexture Project) mod for GTA 4 by BigAssWipe

14. N.U.R.P. (Niko Upscaled and Retexture Project)

Niko spends the whole game in close-up cutscenes, and his textures show their age. N.U.R.P. upscales all of them while keeping the vanilla look, adds three new face textures, and restores his beta black gloves and beta hair. Its creator says it was tested on all versions of the game. A trainer is needed to switch between the face options. Creator: BigAssWipe. Download: N.U.R.P. on Nexus Mods.

HQ Map mod for GTA 4 by Alkimical

15. HQ Map

The vanilla radar and pause-menu map is blurry at modern resolutions. HQ Map rebuilds it at 8448p from the vector map that ships in the game’s manual folder, recolored to match the original palette, so it is a true redraw rather than an upscale. It drops into the update folder, or straight into the game root without a loader. Creator: Alkimical. Download: HQ Map on Nexus Mods.

Gameplay, Combat and Driving

GTA 4’s heavy driving and cover shooting are divisive. These mods lean into realism, and one turns Niko’s story into a completely different game.

Realistic Handling and Physics mod for GTA 4 by Shturmovik2

16. Realistic Handling and Physics

Realistic Handling and Physics reworks the handling of every car, bike and helicopter: suspension, acceleration, top speed, gear counts and ratios, center of gravity, weight distribution and tire grip, with brakes tuned slightly better than real cars. Some cars even switch from rear- to front-wheel drive to match their real counterparts. Its creator tested it on 1.0.7.0 and the Complete Edition. Last updated 2023. Creator: Shturmovik2. Download: Realistic Handling and Physics on Nexus Mods.

SupremacyArms mod for GTA 4 by konarider26

17. SupremacyArms

SupremacyArms rebalances every gun using real-world data (caliber, barrel length, magazine size) so no weapon is a dud. It also changes vehicle damage: cars now catch fire only if you hit the engine or fuel tank, not after a few shots to the doors. Its creator warns the game gets noticeably harder. It covers GTA 4’s main story only, not the episodes. Creator: konarider26. Download: SupremacyArms on Nexus Mods.

Animated Weapons 3.0 mod for GTA 4 by ImpossibleEchoes and Spartan112

18. Animated Weapons 3.0

Guns in GTA 4 barely move when you fire or reload. Animated Weapons adds new weapon models and animations in all three stories, and its page says it was tested on the Complete Edition, 1.0.7.0 and 1.0.8.0. The script is a separate download, and a FusionFix overloader version exists for players running big mods like Console Visuals. Creator: ImpossibleEchoes and Spartan112. Needs: an ASI loader (FusionFix includes one) and OpenIV for the manual install. Download: Animated Weapons 3.0 on Nexus Mods.

Pineapple's Realistic Gun Sounds mod for GTA 4 by MrPayneapple

19. Pineapple’s Realistic Gun Sounds

The vanilla guns sound thin by modern standards. This overhaul replaces them with scratch-made recordings: gunshots with realistic tails, bullet cracks, reloads, shell casings, ricochets, headshot and body impacts and explosions. An EFLC version covers the episodes too. It comes from the creator behind two earlier GTA 4 sound mods, JSRS IV and In:S Weapon Sounds. Creator: MrPayneapple. Download: Pineapple’s Realistic Gun Sounds on Nexus Mods.

Rivers of Blood mod for GTA 4 by DreamMoraOfficial

20. Rivers of Blood

Mature content. Rivers of Blood is GTA 4’s most-endorsed blood mod on Nexus. It adds 98 blood textures, new bullet marks and tire tracks, improved blood effects, new euphoria reaction and death animations and a reworked death screen. A dedicated FusionFix version installs through the FusionFix overloader, or you can use the OIV package in OpenIV. Creator: DreamMoraOfficial. Download: Rivers of Blood on Nexus Mods.

GTA 4 gameplay

21. LCPD First Response (LCPDFR)

LCPDFR turns GTA 4 into a police game: you patrol Liberty City as an LCPD officer, answering calls, pursuing suspects and making arrests. With nearly 2.5 million downloads on its official page, it is the game’s most famous total gameplay change. It is discontinued, and its page offers it purely “for your nostalgic enjoyment.” On the Complete Edition it needs the Compatibility Patch (entry 5), and some features are disabled. Creator: G17 Media. Needs: the Compatibility Patch for GTA IV: Complete Edition. Download: LCPDFR on LCPDFR.com.

A Busier Liberty City

Vanilla GTA 4 can feel oddly empty at times. These two fill the streets.

Fidelity Popcycle mod for GTA 4 by Chunk

22. Fidelity Popcycle

A popcycle file decides how many pedestrians, parked cars and street scenarios appear, and which kinds of people show up in which district. Fidelity Popcycle rewrites it from scratch, with separate rush-hour patterns for residential, industrial and other district types, to make each time of day feel distinct. Install is a single file swap or the FusionFix overloader, and its creator recommends a 1.0.8.0 downgrade for the widest mod compatibility. Creator: Chunk. Download: Fidelity Popcycle on Nexus Mods.

Over 200 New Add-On Vehicles in Traffic mod for GTA 4 by Feoby

23. Over 200 New Add-On Vehicles in Traffic

This mod adds more than 200 add-on vehicles to the traffic that spawns around Liberty City, which its creator describes as lore-friendly, so the same handful of cars stop repeating on every block. It requires FusionFix with a few INI lines changed (its page shows exactly which), and it does not support The Lost and Damned or The Ballad of Gay Tony yet. If you take a cab instead, our guide to calling a taxi in GTA 4 covers both methods. Creator: Feoby. Needs: FusionFix. Download: Over 200 New Add-On Vehicles in Traffic on Nexus Mods.

Trainers and Chaos

For players who have finished the story, or just want to break Liberty City for a while.

Liberty's Legacy Trainer mod for GTA 4 by konstantinos96b

24. Liberty’s Legacy Trainer

Liberty’s Legacy is the most-endorsed GTA 4 mod on Nexus: a clean, modern mod menu with god mode, money, player skins and much more, opened with F11 or RB + X on a controller. It was built for the Complete Edition (1.2.0.43 and above), and its page says it should also run on 1.0.7.0 and 1.0.8.0. Version 2.4.1 arrived in March 2026. Creator: konstantinos96b. Needs: Aru’s ScriptHook, an ASI loader and, on the Complete Edition, the Compatibility Patch’s aCompleteEditionHook.asi. Download: Liberty’s Legacy Trainer on Nexus Mods.

ZMenu IV + Chaos Mod mod for GTA 4 by Zolika1351

25. ZMenu IV + Chaos Mod

ZMenu IV is Zolika1351’s trainer, and its built-in chaos mode is the fun part: more than 500 random effects, with Twitch voting for streamers. It also adds Quake-style movement with bunny hopping and rocket jumping, full combat inside vehicles and deep vehicle customization. It fully supports 1.0.8.0 and 1.0.7.0, so Complete Edition owners need to downgrade first. When you are done, see where GTA 4 lands in our best GTA games ranked. Creator: Zolika1351. Download: ZMenu IV + Chaos Mod on Zolika1351’s Zone.

How We Chose These Mods

Every mod here is a single-player mod for the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV. We checked each one against its creator’s own page on September 21, 2026 for three things: that it is free and still downloadable, which game versions its creator says it supports, and how recently it was updated. We favored the community’s long-standing essentials and the most-endorsed mods on Nexus, and we left out adult mods, anything aimed at online play, and popular mods that their own pages say do not work on the Complete Edition. We built this list the same way as our best Sims 4 mods roundup.

Only download from the creator links above. GTA 4 mods are re-uploaded across dozens of sites, and those copies are often outdated, broken or bundled with malware. Keep a backup of your game folder before you start, and add mods one at a time so you know which one caused a problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the first mod to install for GTA 4? FusionFix. It fixes the PC port’s worst bugs, adds modern graphics options, and gives other mods a safe update folder to load from.

Do GTA 4 mods work on the Complete Edition? Many do, and the newest mods target it directly. Older script mods need the Compatibility Patch for GTA IV: Complete Edition, and a few only run after a downgrade to 1.0.7.0 or 1.0.8.0.

Should I downgrade GTA 4? Only if a mod you want requires it. The Complete Edition plus FusionFix is the best-supported setup today, while downgrading unlocks older classics like ZMenu IV and some of the game’s legacy mod scene.

Can mods get me banned in GTA 4? GTA 4 on PC has no active online mode to be banned from. The Complete Edition removed the old Games for Windows Live multiplayer, and these mods are all single-player, in line with Rockstar’s mod guidelines.

Are GTA 4 mods free? Yes. Every mod on this list is free to download from its creator’s page. Some creators accept tips or run a Patreon, but nothing here is locked behind payment.
