The Hydra in GTA San Andreas comes from Vertical Bird, a mission given by Mike Toreno at Madd Dogg’s Crib in Mulholland. You steal the jet from the Easter Basin Naval Station in San Fierro, destroy four spy ships, and land at Verdant Meadows. After that, a Hydra spawns permanently at the westernmost hangar at Verdant Meadows.
The Mission
The sequence runs:
- Infiltrate Easter Basin Naval Station in San Fierro and board the amphibious assault ship.
- Switch off the SAM sites from the control room. You cannot take off while they are live, and this is the step people miss before getting shot down.
- Take the Hydra and destroy the other jets on deck.
- Fly to the four spy ships near the Sherman Dam in Tierra Robada and destroy all four.
- Land at Verdant Meadows.
For the spy ships, use hover mode: point the thrust nozzles downward, hold position, and target them from a stable hover rather than trying to strafe past at speed.
Where It Spawns Afterwards
This is the part that matters, because the mission reads like a one-off.
- Verdant Meadows, westernmost hangar. This is your reliable one.
- Area 69, where two more appear after Vertical Bird.
The Area 69 pair come with a warning: destroy the missile launchers there first, or you will be shot down more or less immediately on approach.
The Flight School Shortcut
If you have all gold medals at Pilot School, a Hydra spawns on a helipad inside Easter Basin Naval Station, and you can approach the mission differently, including taking the spy ships with a Hunter instead.
That is one of the better arguments for grinding the school properly rather than settling for bronze passes. Our guide on how to fly planes covers the lessons and what the medals unlock.
Flying It
The Hydra is a vertical-takeoff jet, and the thrust nozzle control is the whole skill. Nozzles down gives you a hover you can aim from. Nozzles back gives you conventional flight and a great deal of speed.
Most crashes come from switching between the two at low altitude. Pick one mode and commit until you have height.
It also carries heat-seeking missiles, which makes it the most destructive vehicle in the game by a wide margin, and the fastest way to draw the maximum wanted level. Our guide on how to get a jetpack covers the quieter way to get around.
