In Kingdom Hearts 2, Glide comes from Final Form: Final Form has Glide built in, and Sora’s normal form learns Glide LV1 once Final Form reaches level 3. Final Form only gains experience from defeating Nobodies, so the process is to unlock Final Form late in the story, then take it into fights against Nobodies until it levels up.
Below we cover how to unlock Final Form (which is not as simple as it sounds), how its experience works in each version, where to train, and how Glide levels up after that.
Which Version This Guide Covers
This guide covers Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, the version included in KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX-. That collection is the current way to play on PS4 (playable on PS5), Xbox One, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. The Nintendo Switch cloud version was pulled from sale on June 9, 2026, per Square Enix, and stays playable for existing owners until June 9, 2027. On October 8, 2026, Square Enix releases the Kingdom Hearts Collection I~III, which includes these same games running natively on Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through the Microsoft Store, and Switch cloud owners can transfer their saves to the Switch 2 version. The original 2005 PS2 release of Kingdom Hearts II also gets Glide from Final Form, but the numbers behind unlocking and leveling the form are different, and we flag both.
To glide, jump and then hold Square in midair on PlayStation (X on an Xbox-layout pad). Glide is a Growth Ability, so on Sora’s normal form it has to be equipped in the Abilities menu. The community wiki lists its cost as 3 AP.
Step 1: Unlock Final Form
Final Form becomes available late in the story, after a story scene involving Roxas. Even then, it does not appear in your Drive menu right away. The first time, it has to trigger at random in place of Antiform.
Antiform is the uncontrollable form that sometimes replaces the form you pick when you Drive. Once Final Form is unlocked, each time Antiform would trigger there is a chance you get Final Form instead. Per the community wiki:
- Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix: a 3 percent chance the first time, 9 percent the second, 27 percent the third, and 75 percent after that.
- Original Kingdom Hearts II: 25 percent the first time, 50 percent the second, and a guarantee after that.
The wiki adds that your Drive Gauge must have at least five bars filled when you Drive for Final Form to be possible. In practice, that means repeatedly using Valor, Wisdom or Master Form with a full gauge until an Antiform roll turns into Final Form. Once you get it once, it is added to your Drive menu permanently, and Antiform no longer has a chance to turn into it.
Final Form costs five Drive bars and uses both Donald and Goofy.
Step 2: Level Final Form by Defeating Nobodies
Final Form gains one experience point for each Nobody defeated, per the community wiki, and that includes Organization XIII members. Heartless give nothing, so pick your fights.
Sora’s normal form gets Glide at these Final Form levels:
| Final Form level | What Sora’s normal form gets |
|---|---|
| 3 | Glide LV1 |
| 5 | Glide LV2 |
| 7 | Glide LV3 |
Final Form itself starts with Glide LV1 and upgrades to LV2, LV3 and MAX at levels 3, 5 and 7. Levels 2, 4 and 6 give Sora’s normal form Auto Final and two Form Boost abilities.
The experience needed differs by version. Per the community wiki, reaching Final Form level 3, the one that unlocks Glide, takes 36 total Nobodies in Final Mix and 80 in the original release. Maxing the form at level 7 takes 450 in Final Mix and 500 in the original.
Where to Train Final Form
The community wiki recommends the Castle That Never Was in The World That Never Was, where the enemies are Nobodies rather than Heartless:
- The Mysterious Tower area
- Naught’s Skyway, which is close to the Proof of Existence, so you can refill your Drive Gauge quickly between runs
Other tips from the same source: equip Oathkeeper or other Form Boost sources to stay in Final Form longer, and use a Keyblade that kills Nobodies fast. Mixing standard attacks with magic helps, since Final Form’s magic is much stronger than normal. Because Final Form has no party members, keep Curaga ready.
Once you have Glide on Sora’s normal form, it makes backtracking much faster, and it helps a lot with the Final Mix optional content. If you are trying to plan the full game around this kind of cleanup, our how long Kingdom Hearts takes to beat guide gives a sense of the time involved, and our guide to leveling up Limit Form covers the Final Mix-only Drive Form that pairs well with this grind.
How Glide Works in the First Game
If you came here from the first Kingdom Hearts, the system there is completely different. Glide is a shared ability that Sora, Donald and Goofy learn after sealing the Keyhole in Neverland, and there is no Drive Form involved. That is the ability you need for things like the Tea Party Garden chests in Wonderland. For where each game fits in the series, see our breakdown of how many Kingdom Hearts games there are.
