Mario Kart World has no manual save option, no save slot menu and no “Save Game” button anywhere in its menus: the game writes your progress automatically as you play. That has been true since launch on June 5, 2025, and none of the free updates since has added a save command. Below we cover what the game actually stores, the safe moment to close it, how the Nintendo Switch 2 keeps and backs up that data, and what the official patch notes say about the one kind of data that can be lost.
There Is No Save Button, and That Is by Design
Nintendo’s own materials for the game, from the store page to the support article that lists every update, never mention a save option, and player reports since launch agree that nothing in the pause menu or the Settings/Controller screen relates to saving. Everything is handled in the background, the same way earlier Mario Kart games worked.
What that means in practice: you never have to remember to save, but you also cannot keep multiple save files for one Switch 2 user profile. Progress is tied to the profile you launch the game with, so a second person in the house who wants a clean roster should play from their own user rather than yours.
What the Game Keeps Between Sessions
Because everything is unlock-based, the autosave covers a lot. As of the current build, the profile stores:

- Free Roam collectibles: which P Switch missions you have cleared, which ? Panels and Peach Medallions you have grabbed, and every sticker they awarded. Since version 1.3.0 the Free Roam map marks the P Switches you have already run over and the Peach Medallions you have obtained, and that record lives in the same save.
- Time Trial records and any ghost data you have uploaded or downloaded.
- Your online rating and your Settings/Controller choices (Smart Steering, Auto-Accelerate, Dash Food transformation, Music Volume and the rest).
The Safe Moment to Close the Game
Nintendo has never published a list of exact autosave triggers, so treat any precise timing you read elsewhere as a guess. What we can say is that an unlock or a result is committed at the end of the activity that earned it, so the safe habit is simple: finish the race, battle or P Switch mission you are in, let the results screen play out, and return to the main menu before you close the software or put the console to sleep.
Free Roam deserves one extra note. The 2025 version of this guide claimed the game saves “periodically” during long Free Roam sessions. We cannot confirm that against any official source, so the conservative approach is to pause with the + Button and back out to the menu before quitting, especially right after clearing a mission or picking up a Peach Medallion.
Closing the game mid-race from the HOME Menu will not corrupt anything, per player reports; you simply lose whatever that unfinished race would have given you.
Backing Up Your Save on Nintendo Switch 2
The save file itself lives on the console, per user. Two Nintendo-level tools protect it:
Save Data Cloud. With a Nintendo Switch Online membership, the Switch 2 backs saves up automatically. Nintendo’s cloud backup article covers turning it on. To pull a backup down onto a new or repaired console, highlight the game on the HOME Menu, press the + Button or the – Button, select Save Data Cloud, choose your user and pick Download Save Data; the same option sits under System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud, and there is an Automatic Save-Data Download toggle in that menu. System transfer. Moving to another Switch 2 through the console’s transfer tools carries the Mario Kart World save with the user.
If you ever want to start over, the console’s System Settings > Data Management menu is where save data is deleted; there is no in-game reset option that we can confirm.
Updates and the Data That Can Actually Be Lost
Every update entry on Nintendo’s support page carries the same line: “Save data will still be available for use after downloading the update.” Your unlocks have never been reset by a patch, and you should install updates promptly because online play requires the current version.
The one exception, verified against official patch notes, is Time Trial ghost data. Version 1.4.1 (December 15, 2025) fixed a bug where disconnecting and reconnecting a controller could delete uploaded ghosts from View Rankings without warning. Later, versions 1.7.0 and 1.8.0 each warned that ghosts set using a since-fixed exploit “may be removed from View Rankings without prior notice.” Your local records are not touched by either; only the leaderboard copies are.
