Minecraft: How to Find Diamonds

The best place to find diamonds in Minecraft is near the bottom of the world, around Y -58 and Y -59, where diamond ore is most common, and you need an iron pickaxe or better to mine it. Diamond ore generates anywhere from Y 16 down to the bedrock floor and gets more common the deeper you go, so the fastest route is to dig down to that depth and branch mine or explore deep caves. Below we cover how to check your height on each platform, both mining methods, how Fortune multiplies your haul, the lava layer that catches most players out, and the chests that hand out diamonds for free.

This is current for Minecraft Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.50 (the Wilderness Bound drop from September 15, 2026). None of this year’s drops changed where diamonds generate; the current layout dates back to the Caves and Cliffs terrain overhaul.

Diamond Levels at a Glance

Per the community wiki, diamond ore generates in four batches, all between Y 16 and Y -63, and one of them only below Y -4, which is why the odds keep rising as you go deeper. Most of what you find is deepslate diamond ore, the darker variant in the deepslate layer below Y 0; it drops the same diamond but takes a little longer to break. The wiki lists the same diamond generation on Java and Bedrock.

One quirk is worth knowing: diamond ore is less likely to generate where it would touch air, so open caves show you fewer diamonds than the solid rock around them. There is no such penalty next to water or lava, which is why diamonds so often sit on the walls of underground lakes.

How to Check Your Y-Level

Your position shows three numbers. The middle one is Y, your height. Once it turns negative you are below Y 0, in the deepslate layer where most diamonds are.

Method 1: Branch Mining at the Right Depth

Branch mining is the safest and most reliable way to find diamonds. It costs pickaxe durability, but you control where you dig.

1. Pack for it: at least two iron pickaxes, torches, food, a water bucket, a stack of blocks and some armor.
2. Dig down in a staircase, never straight down, until you reach your target height. Y -58 gives the best odds.
3. Know about the lava layer. Per the community wiki, the game fills cave air between Y -55 and Y -63 with lava when the world generates. Mining at Y -58 puts you inside that layer, so keep the water bucket in your hotbar. If you would rather stay above it, mine at Y -54 and accept slightly lower odds.
4. Dig a main tunnel two blocks tall and one wide.
5. Cut side branches about 20 blocks long off the main tunnel, leaving two or three solid blocks between each one, and check the walls, floor and ceiling as you go.

If a branch breaks into a cave, light it up and explore it before moving on: any cave at this depth is already at diamond level.

Method 2: Caving for Exposed Ore

Exploring caves is faster and uses fewer pickaxes, but it is more dangerous. Look for deep caves, ravines and mineshafts, and scan the walls around lava lakes, since lava does not stop diamond ore from generating. When you spot diamonds beside lava, pour water over the lava first to turn the surface into obsidian and cobblestone, then mine. That same water trick is how you make Nether portal obsidian without a diamond pickaxe.

Be careful under mountains. The deep dark biome generates at these depths, and its sculk shriekers can summon the Warden, a mob that can kill an early-game player in a couple of hits. Getting More Diamonds per Ore

A Fortune III pickaxe more than doubles your diamonds, so it is worth getting one before you mine in bulk. A Silk Touch pickaxe picks up the ore block itself instead, which you can place at home and break later with Fortune, and the community wiki suggests keeping one of each. Never hit diamond ore with a wooden, stone, copper or golden pickaxe, because it breaks and drops nothing.

Your first three diamonds are best spent on a diamond pickaxe, the only tier besides netherite that can mine obsidian.

Diamonds Without Mining

Chests are a real source. Per the community wiki’s loot tables, roughly half of all buried treasure chests hold diamonds, and the rare hidden chests in the new abandoned camps from Wilderness Bound can too. Desert and jungle temples, shipwreck treasure chests, trial chambers, mineshafts and Nether fortresses all have a chance as well.
