Ocarina of Time Remake: Where to Find the Big Poes

Horses graze in the fenced corral at Lon Lon Ranch, with green hills and a ruined stone tower beyond, in the Ocarina of Time remake

Big Poes are in Hyrule Field, and they appear for adult Link riding Epona. Shoot one with the Fairy Bow from the saddle, scoop its soul into an Empty Bottle, and sell it to the Poe Collector in Hyrule Castle Town. Sell him ten and he gives you a bottle of your own.

It is the long way to Link’s last bottle in the Ocarina of Time remake, and it rewards knowing the routine more than knowing the map. Below is what you need, how a catch works, and where to look.

What You Need

Item Why
Epona Big Poes come out for Link on horseback
Fairy Bow To knock them down from the saddle
At least one Empty Bottle To hold the soul; more bottles mean fewer trips
Adult Link Big Poes haunt the field seven years on

Epona comes from Lon Lon Ranch; our Epona guide covers learning her song as young Link and winning her as adult Link. The bow comes from the Forest Temple. Our bottle guide lists every bottle, including the remake’s new one in the Castle Town Potion Shop.

How to Catch a Big Poe

  1. Ride Epona across Hyrule Field. Big Poes stay hidden until you ride near one of their haunts.
  2. Watch for the lantern. A Big Poe fades in carrying a lantern and drifts away from you.
  3. Shoot it with the bow. Aim from the saddle and keep hitting it until it bursts. The remake’s optional motion aiming helps here; our motion aiming guide explains how to turn it on or off.
  4. Bottle the soul. When the Big Poe is beaten it leaves a floating flame. Get off Epona, walk up to it, and swing an Empty Bottle at it before it fades.
  5. Repeat or cash in. Each Big Poe takes a bottle, so the number of bottles you carry decides how many you can hold per trip.

Where to Look

There are ten Big Poes, and in the 1998 game each one had a fixed haunt around the edges of Hyrule Field, near landmarks such as the entrances to Castle Town, Kakariko Village, Lon Lon Ranch, Gerudo Valley and the road to Lake Hylia. Nintendo has said some areas of the remake are laid out “slightly” differently, so ride the edges of the field slowly rather than dashing between landmarks, and let each spot have a moment to trigger.

Ride in loops. Once a haunt is cleared, it stays empty, so working around the field in one direction stops you checking the same places twice.

Selling to the Poe Collector

The Poe Collector runs the Ghost Shop in what is left of Castle Town in adult Link’s time, in the guardhouse by the entrance. Talk to him with a Big Poe in a bottle and he buys it and adds it to your count.

At ten Big Poes (1,000 of his points in the 1998 game, 100 for each), he gives you an Empty Bottle. That is the reward that matters; the rupees he pays along the way are a bonus. Our rupee guide has better money if that is what you are after.
