Pokemon Pokopia is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive. There is no original Switch version, none has been announced, and Nintendo’s own store lists it as Switch 2 Exclusive. You cannot buy or own it on Switch 1.
But that is not the whole answer, which is why the question keeps getting asked.
The GameShare Loophole
Original Switch owners can play part of Pokopia through GameShare, without owning the game.
A Switch 2 owner shares the session, and the Switch 1 player joins Palette Town. From there they can build, craft, gather, and use the abilities the host has already unlocked. It is a genuine slice of the game rather than a spectator window.
The limits are real, though:
- Palette Town only. The Switch 1 player cannot travel to Withered Wasteland, Bleak Beach, Rocky Ridges or Sparkling Skylands.
- No interacting with Pokemon traces.
- Access ends when the session ends. Nothing persists on the Switch 1 side.
- Nintendo describes GameShare here as two players, so it is not the full four-player experience covered in our multiplayer guide.
The host also has to unlock GameShare first by progressing into Withered Wasteland and obtaining Rock Smash.
So Is It Worth It?
If you have a friend with a Switch 2 and you want to see what the fuss is about, GameShare is a legitimate way to spend an evening building alongside them at no cost.
If you want the actual game, the Pokedex, the story biomes and your own town, you need the hardware. There is no way around that, and given the game’s reception, an 89 on Metacritic and over five million copies sold by August 2026, it is one of the stronger arguments for the console.
