Pokemon Pokopia: How to Play With Friends

Decorating an interior in Pokemon Pokopia

Pokemon Pokopia supports up to four players, a host plus three, over local wireless or online. Online needs a Nintendo Switch Online membership; local wireless does not. The important thing to understand before inviting anyone is that there are three different co-op modes and the rules differ in each.

Unlocking It

Reach Environment Level 2 in Withered Wasteland, roughly thirty minutes in. Every session starts from a Pokemon Center PC using Link Play, and joining online uses a Link Code.

The Three Modes

Visiting someone’s story areas (Withered Wasteland, Bleak Beach, Rocky Ridges, Sparkling Skylands). Visitors are in Spectator Mode and cannot change terrain or building work. They can look around, interact with Pokemon and habitats, take daily items from the Pokemon Center PC, and importantly log Pokemon and habitat information into their own Pokedex. That last point makes visiting genuinely worthwhile even though you cannot build.

Palette Town. This one is collaborative. Visitors can build, gather, craft and tend the land alongside the host, though the host can toggle Spectator Mode on if they would rather not have help.

Cloud Islands. Online-only persistent blank islands where all four players can build together freely. The host does not need to be online for the island to remain accessible. Recipes and habitats you find there are kept, but Pokemon are not properly registered.

What Does Not Come Home With You

This is the rule that surprises people, so plan around it.

Items do not transfer between worlds. You cannot carry bag items from your town to a Cloud Island or bring anything back. All progress and rewards for challenges go to the host only.

There are two legitimate workarounds. Visitors can order items from the PC Shop while away and collect them once home. And visitors can photograph objects they like, then recreate them at home with a 3D printer using their own materials, which is the practical way to bring a friend’s design back.

If you visit a Dream Island together, other players choose whether to join, and everyone has to agree before the group leaves.

Playing on an Original Switch

Worth knowing if a friend does not have a Switch 2: GameShare lets an original Switch owner join a session in Palette Town only, where they can build, craft, gather and use abilities the host has already unlocked. They cannot visit the story biomes. Our Switch 1 guide covers the limits of that.
