Red Dead Redemption 2: How to Max Out Dead Eye

To max out Dead Eye in Red Dead Redemption 2 you have to finish three separate jobs: reach Dead Eye Level 5 by playing the main story through Chapter 6, raise the Dead Eye attribute to its top level with XP and the single-player challenges, and keep the Dead Eye core full or gold with consumables. Most players only do the first, which is why their Dead Eye still runs dry in a few seconds. Below we cover all three, including the part XP alone cannot finish.

This guide covers Story Mode in the current build of Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS4, Xbox One and PC. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S run those versions through backward compatibility, so everything here works the same there. If you only need the controls, our guide to using Dead Eye covers the buttons and what each level does.

The Three Parts of a Maxed Dead Eye

The game uses the words “level” and “Dead Eye” for different systems, which is where most confusion comes from.

Part What it controls How you raise it
Dead Eye level (1 to 5) What you can do inside Dead Eye: auto marks, manual marks, staying in after firing, highlighted weak spots Story missions only
Dead Eye attribute (the outer ring) How long each use of Dead Eye lasts Attribute XP, then the challenge rewards
Dead Eye core (the inner icon) How fast the ring refills Consumables, sleep, food, talismans

A truly maxed Dead Eye has all five story levels, a full-length attribute ring, and a core that stays full (ideally gold) so the ring refills quickly.

Step 1: Unlock All Five Dead Eye Levels

You cannot grind the five Dead Eye levels. Each one is handed to you by a main story mission, the first in Chapter 1 and the last in Chapter 6, so the only way to “max” this part is to keep playing the story. The community wiki lists the missions as “Old Friends”, “Pouring Forth Oil IV”, “Urban Pleasures”, “Fleeting Joy” and “Goodbye, Dear Friend”. Other player guides name a different Chapter 4 mission for Level 3, so treat the chapter as the reliable part.

If you want a sense of how far away Level 5 is, our chapter and length breakdown shows where each chapter sits in a full playthrough.

Step 2: Level the Dead Eye Attribute With XP

The attribute is the ring around the eye icon in the bottom left of the HUD. Every level lengthens the ring, which means more seconds of slowed time per use. Player guides say you can see the current level and the XP left to the next one under Pause > Player, on your character’s Health, Stamina and Dead Eye page.

Per the community wiki and several player guides, these all award Dead Eye XP:

  • Challenges. The Bandit, Gambler and Sharpshooter challenge lists pay Dead Eye XP for every rank, from 25 XP for the first rank up to 150 XP for the last, per the community wiki. Player guides call them the single biggest source.
  • Skinning animals. Player guides put this at 1 to 10 XP per animal, more for bigger animals. It stacks nicely with hunting for perfect pelts.
  • Long-range headshots. Player guides describe 1 to 5 XP for headshots from beyond 50 meters, scaled by distance.
  • Crafting and cooking. About 1 XP per item, per player guides.
  • Camp chores. Player guides list 5 XP per chore, which also earns a little honor.
  • Valerian Root. The community wiki says consuming it gives Dead Eye experience, and player guides put it at a quarter of the XP you need for your next level. It is rare, so save it for the higher levels where that quarter is worth the most.

Player guides agree that XP on its own takes the attribute to level 8, at roughly 1,100 XP in total.

Speed it up with a trinket. The community wiki lists the Coyote Fang Trinket, crafted at a fence from the legendary coyote’s fang, as raising Dead Eye XP gain by 10 percent. Craft it before you start grinding challenges.

Step 3: Unlock the Last Two Bars (Levels 9 and 10)

This is the part most players miss. The final two bars of the ring do not come from XP. Per the community wiki, completing the single-player challenges unlocks equipment sets, and buying a complete set tied to Dead Eye adds one bonus bar, while buying all three Dead Eye sets adds another. The wiki lists the Explorer, Herbalist and Survivalist sets for Dead Eye. Other player guides describe the requirement as finishing the challenge lists themselves, so the safe plan is the same either way: work through the challenges, then buy every reward set they unlock.

Player guides point to the pause menu’s Progress section for each challenge list and what its next rank needs. Plan around one catch: the community wiki notes that the Herbalist list is the one set that normally cannot be finished before the Epilogue, so a fully maxed ring may have to wait until then. Start it early and pick plants as you ride.

Step 4: Keep the Core Full or Gold

A long ring is wasted if the core is empty. Per the community wiki, cores drain completely in about 90 minutes of play, drain slower while you are mounted or at a healthy weight, and do not drain at all in the gang’s camp. When the Dead Eye core is empty, the wiki says your aim gets noticeably worse and the ring barely refills.

  • Snake Oil line. Per the community wiki, Snake Oil restores Dead Eye and fortifies it slightly, Potent Snake Oil fortifies it more, and Special Snake Oil, which you craft at a campfire once you have the recipe, fortifies it greatly. Fortified means a temporary gold core.
  • Chewing Tobacco also restores Dead Eye, but the wiki notes it slightly damages the core afterward.
  • Sleep and food. Sleeping refills every core, and eating meat refills cores too. A gold Dead Eye core, per the wiki, improves your accuracy and lets the ring slowly regenerate on its own.
  • Talismans. The Alligator Tooth Talisman, per the community wiki, slows Dead Eye core drain by 10 percent, and the Panther’s Eye Trinket briefly slows the ring’s drain when you use it.

Can You Max It Out With Cheats?

Yes, but at a cost. The game has a cheat menu under Pause > Settings, and the community wiki lists cheats for infinite Dead Eye (“BE GREEDY ONLY FOR FORESIGHT”), for raising all three bar levels (“SEEK ALL THE BOUNTY OF THIS PLACE”) and for setting your Dead Eye level directly. The same wiki warns that active cheats block saving and trophies or achievements, so turn them off before you rely on a save. Our guide to saving your game explains how saving normally works.

Dead Eye in Red Dead Online

Red Dead Online has no story levels and no challenge bars. Dead Eye there depends on the Dead Eye ability card you equip, and cards are upgraded with money as you rank up, so “maxing” it means buying and upgrading the card that suits how you play. Rockstar’s Red Dead Online page is the official reference.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the max Dead Eye level in RDR2? There are two maximums. The story ability tops out at Level 5, unlocked in Chapter 6. The attribute ring tops out at level 10, per player guides, with the last two levels tied to the single-player challenges rather than XP.

How do you level up Dead Eye fast? Work through the Bandit, Gambler and Sharpshooter challenges, skin every animal you kill, and craft the Coyote Fang Trinket for extra XP. Player guides also point to Valerian Root, which grants a large chunk of a level at once.

Why is my Dead Eye stuck at level 8? Player guides agree that XP alone stops at level 8. The final two bars come from the challenge rewards, which the community wiki ties to buying the equipment sets the challenges unlock.

How do you get a gold Dead Eye core? Use a fortifying item such as Potent or Special Snake Oil, or a cheat. Per the community wiki, a gold core improves your aim and lets the Dead Eye ring slowly refill by itself.

Can you max Dead Eye before the end of the story? Not quite. You can keep the core gold at any point, but the last story level only arrives in Chapter 6, and per the community wiki the Herbalist challenges tied to the final attribute bar normally cannot be finished before the Epilogue. A fully maxed Dead Eye is an end-of-game goal.
