Silent Hill: Townfall on PS5 has two graphics modes: Quality mode, which targets 30 fps, and Performance mode, which targets 60 fps. A technical comparison published at launch puts Quality at roughly 1440p and Performance at roughly 1080p internally, both reconstructed to 4K, and found that neither mode holds its target perfectly, even on PS5 Pro.
For most players we would start in Performance mode, because a stealth game where you track enemies by peeking and tuning the CRTV benefits from a smoother, more responsive image. Here is what each mode trades away.
Quality Mode vs Performance Mode on PS5
| Quality mode | Performance mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Frame rate target | 30 fps | 60 fps |
| Internal resolution (reported) | About 1440p | About 1080p |
| Upscaling on base PS5 | TSR to 4K | TSR to 4K |
| Visual cutbacks | None relative to Performance | Lower shadow quality on base PS5, weaker reflections, slightly reduced fog and post-processing |
The frame rate targets come from reviews and the PS5 Pro feature rundown shared before launch; the resolution and visual comparisons come from launch technical analysis reported by outlets including Twisted Voxel and iXBT.games, so treat the exact pixel counts as measured estimates rather than official numbers.
The most interesting trade-off for a Silent Hill game is fog. The analysis reports that Performance mode trims some post-processing, including fog, but describes the difference as limited and not enough to change the overall look.
What Changes on PS5 Pro
The PS5 Pro feature rundown shared before launch lists the same two modes, 30 fps Quality and 60 fps Performance, with PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) and ray-traced lighting. According to the launch comparison:
- Internal resolutions and targets are broadly the same as the base PS5.
- The Pro uses PSSR instead of TSR for upscaling, giving a cleaner image.
- The Pro has higher-quality textures and shadows in both modes.
The Pro is still not locked. The same analysis reports drops to around 42 fps in the most demanding scenes in Performance mode, and both modes show occasional stutter on both consoles.
How Stable Is It?
Reports vary by reviewer. Push Square, playing on PS5 Pro, described a smooth playthrough in Quality mode, while Tom’s Guide noted frame rate drops in hectic combat and a black screen during one key cutscene. Konami’s first post-launch notice promises a performance patch for the Steam version; it does not mention PS5. Our launch and PC patch report has the wording, and we will update this guide if a PS5 patch is announced.
Which Mode Should You Pick?
- Performance mode if you are sensitive to input lag or motion sickness, or you want stealth and combat to feel responsive. This is our default recommendation.
- Quality mode if you play on a large 4K TV, want the sharpest image and best reflections, and do not mind 30 fps in a slow-paced game.
- On PS5 Pro, Performance mode keeps most of the Pro’s texture and shadow gains, so the case for it is even stronger.
Display Settings Worth Changing
- Letterboxing. Townfall uses a cinematic 2.35:1 frame. Push Square reports the black bars can be turned off for gameplay, though they stay in cutscenes.
- Motion blur and head bob. Turning both off, and widening the field of view, is what players most often recommend if the first-person camera makes them queasy. Results vary: one PS5 Pro player quoted by iXBT.games still felt sick after making those changes, so take breaks if it persists.
- 3D audio. Konami built enemy detection heavily around sound, so a headset with PS5 3D audio is worth more here than a resolution bump.
There is no photo mode. GamesRadar+ noted its absence in its review, so screenshots are limited to the PS5’s standard Create button capture.
