Sims 3: How to Become a Mermaid

In The Sims 3: Island Paradise, mermaids are a playable occult life state that allows Sims to live both on land and under the sea. They swim faster than regular Sims, breathe underwater, and unlock access to unique underwater features. There are a few different ways to become a mermaid, depending on how you want to play.

Method 1: Use the Mermadic Kelp

The quickest way to become a mermaid is by using Mermadic Kelp, a special item that instantly transforms a Sim.

How to Get Mermadic Kelp:

  • Complete Scuba Diving Adventures
Occasionally, completing high-level scuba adventures or treasure hunts will reward your Sim with Mermadic Kelp.
  • Make Friends with a Mermaid
If your Sim becomes friends with an existing mermaid, they might receive Mermadic Kelp as a gift.
  • Buy Mermadic Kelp with Lifetime Rewards
Open the Lifetime Rewards panel and purchase Mermadic Kelp for 25,000 Lifetime Happiness points. Once you have it, simply have your Sim eat it.

After eating the kelp, your Sim will automatically transform into a mermaid. This includes a new scale pattern, tail, and access to mermaid-specific needs and interactions.

Method 2: Create a Mermaid in CAS

If you prefer to start as a mermaid right away:

  1. Go into Create-a-Sim with the Island Paradise expansion installed.
  2. In the Supernatural type or life state menu, choose Mermaid.
  3. Customize your Sim’s tail, scale color, and other features.

Mermaids created this way start with all abilities unlocked.

Mermaid Needs and Features

Once your Sim becomes a mermaid, their hydration becomes a critical need.

  • Hydration replaces the Hygiene need.
Your Sim must swim in the ocean, take baths, or shower frequently to maintain it.
  • Scales and Tails:
Tails appear only when your Sim is swimming. On land, mermaids walk like normal Sims.
  • Kelp Diet:
Mermaids prefer eating raw fish and kelp over regular meals.
  • Special Dive Spot:
Mermaids can access the hidden area Mermaid Grotto, which is only available to mermaids and high-level divers.
  • Faster Swimming:
Mermaids can travel much faster in water, making them ideal for exploring dive lots and treasure spots.
