To build a house in Terraria, enclose a room of at least 60 tiles counting its outer frame (10 blocks wide by 6 tall is the classic starter size), cover the inside with background walls you placed yourself, and add a light source, a table or Work Bench, a chair, and a door or platform. Then open the Housing menu and use the Housing Query inside the room: if the game answers “This housing is suitable.”, a villager can move in.
Below we cover exactly what the game checks, the cheapest wooden starter house, the controls on each platform, what the 1.4.5 update changed, and the failure messages that trip up most players. This guide is checked against Re-Logic’s official notes for the current 1.4.5.8 build of Terraria, which Re-Logic says is now the same version on PC, console and mobile.
What Changed for Houses in 1.4.5
The Bigger and Boulder update (1.4.5) in January 2026 loosened the rules. Villagers no longer need a valid home before they show up, but Re-Logic’s notes say homeless villagers “retreat to safety” and are unavailable at night, and the full changelog adds that only one arrives per day and it leaves if it has no house by nightfall. Houses are still how you keep villagers, and their shops, around.
The Housing Query now highlights the area it scanned, marks the furniture it counted, and tells you when a room has nowhere to stand. Homeless villagers also gained a Housing dialogue option with building instructions, and houses no longer need a solid, non-platform block to count.
Terraria House Requirements
A room has to pass every one of these checks:
- Size: at least 60 tiles in total including the frame, under 750 tiles, and no more than 100 tiles wide or tall. Interiors of 8 by 4, 6 by 6 and 4 by 8 all work.
- A closed frame: solid blocks, platforms, doors, trap doors or tall gates, with no openings to the outside.
- Player-placed background walls: natural cave walls count as unsafe. Small gaps are tolerated, but a run of five or more tiles in a line without a placed wall fails.
- One of each furniture type: a light source (any torch, candle, lantern or chandelier), a table (a Work Bench, dresser, bookcase or piano also counts), a chair (a bed, bench, sofa or toilet also counts) and an entrance (a door, platform, trap door or tall gate).
- Standing space: a clear floor spot where a villager can stand. Since 1.4.5 that spot can be a platform.
- Distance from evil biomes: nearby Corruption and Crimson blocks raise an “evil score”. Per the official Terraria wiki, 300 or more makes the house invalid, while Hallowed blocks and Sunflowers lower it.
How to Build a Starter House, Step by Step
A 10 by 6 wooden house takes roughly 55 Wood (fewer if the frame is Dirt or Stone) plus one Gel.
- Craft a Work Bench by hand from 10 Wood and place it. It also satisfies the table requirement.
- Build the frame. Lay a floor and a ceiling 10 blocks wide and join them with side walls so the inside is 8 wide and 4 tall. In one side wall, leave a 3-block-tall gap at floor level for the door.
- Fill the background. At the Work Bench, 1 Wood makes 4 Wood Walls. Cover every interior tile.
- Add the furniture. A Wooden Door costs 6 Wood and a Wooden Chair costs 4, both at the Work Bench. Torches are crafted by hand, 3 per Gel and Wood. Place the door in the gap, then the chair and a torch.
- Check it. Open your inventory, select the Housing menu (the small house icon by your equipment slots on PC), pick the Housing Query question mark and click inside the room.
These are the default buttons from the official wiki’s controls table; remapped controls follow your on-screen prompts.
| Action | PC | PlayStation | Xbox | Switch |

Reading the Housing Query
When a house fails, the message tells you why:
- “This room is missing a wall”: a hole in the frame, or a big stretch without background wall.
- “Natural walls in this room need replacing!”: you built over cave walls. Hammer them out and place your own.
- “This room is too small”: count the frame too. You need 60 tiles in total.
- “This house is missing…”: the message lists whichever of the light source, door, table and chair are absent.
- “This room has no space to stand in!”: clear some floor. Furniture packed wall to wall can cause it.
- “This housing is corrupted.”: too much Corruption or Crimson nearby. Build farther away or purify the area.
Once a room passes, drag a villager’s flag from the Housing menu into it, or let new arrivals claim empty rooms themselves.
Tips for Building a Whole Town
Rooms can share walls, floors and doors, so stacking 10 by 6 boxes into an apartment block is the cheapest way to house a crowd. The game checks each enclosed room separately, and platforms work as floors between stories.
Build spares, because spreading Corruption or Crimson in Hardmode can invalidate a house. Villager happiness depends on biome and neighbors, not decoration, per the official wiki, and a Pylon (the fast-travel crystal villagers sell) only works with at least two villagers living near it. A Bed also satisfies the chair requirement and doubles as your respawn point, so it is worth giving your first house one.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the smallest house you can build in Terraria? It needs at least 60 tiles including the frame. A 10 by 6 box is the common minimum, and the official wiki lists narrower shapes such as 5 by 12 that work if a Work Bench is your table.
Why does my Terraria house say it is not valid? Read the Housing Query message. The usual causes are a gap in the frame, natural cave walls, missing furniture, no floor space, or nearby Corruption or Crimson.
Do NPCs still need houses after the 1.4.5 update? Not to arrive, but they do to stay. A homeless villager can show up, but Re-Logic says it retreats and is unavailable at night without a home.
Can villagers live in underground houses? Yes. Any room that passes the checks works at any depth. The Truffle is the main exception, since he needs a house in a Glowing Mushroom biome.
