Terraria: How to Find the Shimmer

A Terraria player flying up through a glowing blue mushroom cave, with the minimap open in the corner

The Shimmer is the lavender liquid pool at the center of the Aether, a mini-biome that generates once in every Terraria world created on version 1.4.4 or later. Search on the same side of the world as the Jungle, out toward the world’s edge, in the Underground or Cavern layer: you have found it when the cave background turns into a black, star-filled sky.

Below we cover exactly where the Aether generates, how to narrow the search with a Compass, the signs that you are close, what to do if your world has no Shimmer, and the mistakes to avoid before you use it. Everything is checked against the current 1.4.5.8 build of Terraria and Re-Logic’s patch notes.

Where the Aether Generates

The Shimmer does not appear at random. Per the official Terraria wiki’s world generation notes:

  • It is always on the Jungle’s side of the world. The Dungeon is always on the opposite side from the Jungle (outside drunk worlds), so the Shimmer is never on the Dungeon’s side.
  • It sits near the outer edge. The game first tries the outer 11 percent of the world’s width, at least 200 tiles from the edge, and widens the search to the outer fifth only if that fails.
  • It is underground. It lands partway down the Underground layer or in the Cavern layer, never on the surface or in the Underworld.
  • It avoids Ebonstone and Crimstone during generation, which is what pushes it out of its first zone in some worlds.

In practice, that usually puts the pool somewhere beneath the stretch between the Jungle and the ocean on that side.

Narrowing It Down With a Compass

A Compass shows how far east or west of the world’s center you are, in feet, and a Depth Meter shows how deep you are. For the Aether’s first-choice zone, the official wiki’s figures work out to these Compass readings on the Jungle’s side:

World size Compass reading to search
Small About 3,300 to 3,800 feet
Medium About 5,000 to 6,000 feet
Large About 6,550 to 8,000 feet

If the Aether had to fall back to a wider zone, it can sit slightly closer to the center than these ranges. The quickest way to search is to dig one straight shaft down through that range and explore sideways from it.

The same wiki documents a trick that ties the Guide’s starting name to the Aether’s exact horizontal position on a fresh world, with a lookup table of names. Treat it as a hint rather than a guarantee: the wiki notes it fails whenever the Aether generated outside its first zone, and it never works on For the Worthy worlds.

Signs You Are Close

  • The background changes to the black, multicolored starfield of space, even behind solid rock.
  • The music changes to the Aether’s own track.
  • Faelings, small glowing critters, drift over the pool.
  • Gem Trees grow around it in worlds generated since the 1.4.5 update.

Third-party world map viewers can also show the pool’s location, but they reveal the rest of your world too.

If Your World Has No Shimmer

The Aether only exists in worlds generated on 1.4.4 or later, and Terraria never adds new biomes to an existing world, so older worlds have no Shimmer at all. The fix is to create a new world and bring your character: your inventory travels with you, so you can carry items in, transmute them and take the results home.

Hotfix 1.4.5.7 also fixed a bug in which the Aether sometimes generated without its Shimmer pool, according to Re-Logic’s patch notes. If you found the starry background but no liquid in a recent world, that bug may be why.

Before You Touch the Shimmer

  • Only drop items you mean to change. Most crafted items decraft back into their materials, and some transform instead. Several of those are permanent upgrades worth knowing: Life Crystals become Vital Crystals, Mana Crystals become Arcane Crystals, Life Fruit becomes Aegis Fruit, Gold Worms become Gummy Worms and Pink Pearls become Galaxy Pearls.
  • Do not fall in by accident. Submerging your head inflicts Shimmering, which per the official wiki stops you from moving or using items and sinks you straight down through solid blocks until you reach an open space or the Underworld. Even your fishing bobber touching it does this, and you cannot fish in Shimmer.
  • It is finite until the Moon Lord. You cannot scoop it with a bucket, and it turns into Aetherium Blocks when it meets water or lava. After the Moon Lord, the Bottomless Shimmer Bucket gives you unlimited Shimmer.

Make It Easy to Come Back

Throw any Pylon into the Shimmer to transmute it into an Aether Pylon, one of two new pylons the 1.4.5 update added. Like other pylons, it only works with at least two villagers living nearby, so build a couple of small rooms beside the pool using our guide on how to build a house in Terraria.

Add a bed while you are there. Following our guide on how to set a spawn point turns the pool into a place your Magic Mirror returns you to, and our guide on how to make a bed covers the materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the Shimmer in Terraria? In the Aether, a mini-biome in the Underground or Cavern layer on the same side of the world as the Jungle, near the outer edge rather than the center.

Why can’t I find the Shimmer in my world? Your world may predate the 1.4.4 update, which added it. Older worlds never gain one, so create a new world and bring your character.

Is the Shimmer on the same side as the Dungeon? No. The Dungeon always generates on the side opposite the Jungle outside drunk worlds, and the Shimmer is always on the Jungle’s side.

Can you pick up Shimmer with a bucket? No. An Empty Bucket cannot hold it. Only the Bottomless Shimmer Bucket, available after defeating the Moon Lord, creates more.

What happens if you fall into the Shimmer? You gain the Shimmering debuff and sink through solid blocks until you reach an open space or the Underworld. You cannot move or use items until it ends.
