Hinterland announced The Long Dark: Iron Road, a Survival Mode expansion built around a train you restore and drive, on October 15, 2026, and it enters Early Access on Steam on October 27. The studio revealed it in a Steam announcement with a teaser trailer and posted an Early Access roadmap on the official site.
The Details
Iron Road is DLC for The Long Dark‘s Survival Mode, not a standalone game. It is set on Cauldron Island, a flooded volcanic caldera of five main islands named after the daughters of a century-old industrialist, Hamish McLeod, with more than 100 km of railway and the ruins of a whaling industry. You follow his great-granddaughter Alice to uncover how his whale-oil empire collapsed, through dozens of wax cylinder recordings and light narrative missions modeled on Tales from the Far Territory.
The headline feature is the Prototype Train, which Hinterland calls “part transportation, part mobile shelter.” Repair Bays unlock engine upgrades and cosmetics, and the track throws up broken switches, rockfalls, deep drifts, electrified sections and Aurora gates. The deeper you travel, the stronger the Aurora effects, which the studio calls a preview of the post-WINTERMUTE world.
A “Fulmar” autopilot boat links Desolation Point on Great Bear Island to Port Remnant on Cauldron Island, so gear can travel both ways. Hinterland says many new items will work in the base game, and its roadmap lists a harpoon for seal hunting, a whale oil lamp and clothing such as the Whaler’s Coat and Sealskin Boots. It flags only a few features as unlocked from day one, including the boat, the train and a Portable Oil Heater. The train itself stays on Cauldron Island.
Early Access opens with Anna Island and more than 30 km of track. The other four islands unlock in later updates, with monthly small updates and quarterly large ones planned. Hinterland says it first meant to release Iron Road in large parts over time, like Tales from the Far Territory, but chose Early Access after talking with Valve. Price has not been announced, and the announcement covers Steam only.
What This Means for Players
If you want all of Cauldron Island, wait: the launch build is one island of five, and Hinterland calls its roadmap “aspirational” and “not a promise or guarantee.” If you mostly play on Great Bear, the items you can bring home are the draw, but most are not flagged for day one, which is one more reason to let Early Access run for a while.
