The Witcher 3 Remastered: How to Use Mods on PS5, Xbox and Switch 2

To use mods in The Witcher 3 Remastered on PS5, Xbox Series X|S or Switch 2, open Mods from the game’s main menu, log in with your CD PROJEKT RED account, connect it to mod.io, then select Subscribe on any mod you want and restart the game. That is the whole setup: the Remaster’s built-in Cross Platform Mod Support works the same way on consoles as on PC, with no PC or file transfer needed.

For the first time in the game’s eleven-year history, The Witcher 3 has official console mods, and they arrived with the Remaster on September 29. Below are the exact steps, which mods show up on consoles, what happens to trophies and saves, and what changed for PC mod veterans.

Updated October 1, 2026: rewritten now that the Remaster is out, with CD Projekt Red’s official install steps, how subscriptions sync between platforms, how to spot console-ready mods, and offline play.

How to Install Mods on PS5, Xbox and Switch 2

These steps come from CD Projekt Red’s mod support article:

  1. Launch the game and choose Mods on the main menu.
  2. Log in with your CD PROJEKT RED account. Creating one is free.
  3. Connect it to mod.io, the platform that hosts the mods. CDPR says both steps are required to install anything. Cyberpunk 2077 now uses the same mod.io setup on consoles, as our Cyberpunk console mods guide explains.
  4. Browse the catalog, open a mod you like and select Subscribe.
  5. Restart the game so the mod loads.
  6. Go to the Installed section and check that the mod is on the list with its checkbox selected. If the box is clear, the mod is installed but not enabled.

CD Projekt Red’s official change list describes the feature as “an in-game tool powered by mod.io that allows you to easily browse and install player-created mods,” and Xbox’s announcement promised mods with “new quests, weapons, and equipment,” so this is real content modding, not texture toggles.

Which Mods Work on Consoles

  • Look for the “Available on consoles” tag. CDPR says to check a mod’s details page for that tag. Mods without it are PC only.
  • Curation applies. Console mods must meet platform requirements, and CDPR says mods built with REDkit, its official modding tool, “have the best chance at being approved for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.”
  • Switch 2 gets “most mods”, with restrictions under Nintendo’s guidelines and the hardware’s technical limits. Our Switch 2 guide covers the rest of that version.
  • Catalogs can differ by platform, but the browsing happens in the same in-game menu everywhere.

Your Subscriptions Follow You Between Platforms

Mod subscriptions sync through your CD PROJEKT RED account. Subscribe to mods on PC, log in with the same account on PS5, and you get the same set, except that mods not supported on consoles are ignored and don’t appear there.

That matters for saves. To move a save between PC and console with cross progression, CDPR says you “need to have the same set of mods enabled on both platforms,” or the save “may not load correctly.” If you play on both, stick to mods tagged for consoles. Our guides to cross progression setup and whether your saves carry over cover the rest of that process.

Trophies, Achievements and Modded Saves

  • On consoles, trophies and achievements are disabled on modded saves. Any save created while mods are enabled counts as modded.
  • Modded saves carry a cog icon, the mod.io symbol, next to the save name, so you can tell them apart.
  • Keep a clean save if you are still chasing trophies: make a manual save with mods disabled before you experiment. Our achievements and trophies guide covers what is left to earn.

Playing Offline

You can load a modded save offline as long as every mod it needs is already installed. You can’t install new mods offline, so if a mod is missing, that save won’t load until you reconnect and install it.

The HD Reworked Headline

The most-installed Witcher 3 mod in history retired into the game itself: HalkHogan’s HD Reworked Project is officially integrated into the Remaster, on PC and consoles, per the modder’s own confirmation: “HDRP will no longer be needed.” CDPR’s change list confirms the integration from its side: it “updated multiple textures and models based on assets from The Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project.” A decade of the community’s best texture work is now everyone’s baseline, no download needed.

For PC Mod Veterans

CDPR’s mod support article says older mods that use xml, script or w3strings files “will not work upon the release of the update,” but REDkit includes a way to update such mods so they work as normal. Script mods for the new system must be built in REDkit; textures, bundles and similar content can be made with other tools. Finished mods are uploaded and managed on the mod.io website.

The change list also promises “various engine, UI and other improvements for REDkit, making it easier for modders to create, manage and customize their content.” The Remaster rebuilds the renderer (native DX12 with multithreading, new lighting), and that class of change historically resets the modding ecosystem, as the 2022 update did, so expect older Nexus mods to need updates from their authors. If an old modded save won’t load, our guide to fixing saves not showing up helps, and our news story on the full change list covers the rest of the update. Every guide is on our Witcher 3 hub.
