The skill tree revamp is the biggest gameplay change in The Witcher 3 Remastered, and on September 28, a day before launch, CD Projekt Red put the rules in writing in its official change list. Here’s the honest state of knowledge: what CDPR has confirmed, what previews suggested, and what remains genuinely unpublished, in one place, with no invented details.
Confirmed by CDPR
From CD Projekt Red’s official “See what’s new” change list (our news story on the full change list covers everything else in it, and our transmog guide covers the new Reforging system):
- Skills are now organized into a skill tree, and each skill has three ranks.
- Prerequisites replace point thresholds: unlocking a new skill “now requires having the necessary prerequisite skills rather than spending a set number of skill points.”
- Rebalanced: CDPR refined skill bonus values, effects and synergies across the tree.
- Some skills are renamed “to better reflect their effects.”
- The skill screen is reorganized “into a more intuitive skill tree layout,” and skills get new visual effects.
- Your skill points have been reset. CDPR flags this one “IMPORTANT.” Existing saves still load, as our saves guide covers.
The change list pairs the skill rework with combat changes: new finisher animations for Geralt, smoother gap-closing animations, improved target-lock switching, and polished combat behavior for every non-boss monster. Before the list arrived, CDPR’s announcement materials pitched progression as “completely reimagined”, with new perks and abilities and many existing skills reworked, aiming for builds that are “more flexible and intuitive.” Executive producer Jakub Kutrzuba’s framing: “what would The Witcher 3 play like if it launched in 2026.” The change list itself does not mention new perks, so treat that part as the earlier pitch rather than an official feature list.
What Previews Suggest
Hands-on coverage consistently reaches for one comparison: Cyberpunk 2077’s post-2.0 skill redesign, describing interlocking branches over the original’s linear point-dumps. CDPR rebuilt Cyberpunk’s progression to acclaim in 2023; the previews read the Witcher revamp as the same philosophy applied to Geralt. The official prerequisite system and three ranks per skill fit that reading, but CDPR itself does not make the comparison, so treat it as informed reading, not spec.
What’s Still Unpublished
The official change list stops short of:
- Specific skill names, values, or tree layouts (it confirms renames and rebalancing but names none of them)
- What each of a skill’s three ranks costs or adds
- How mutations (Blood and Wine’s system) integrate
- How Toxicity and alchemy builds translate
- Whether slotting/equipping abilities survives from the original design
Any site that listed “all new Remastered skills” before launch was inventing them; CDPR’s own list names none, so consider the absence of a list here a feature.
How to Prepare Your Build Brain
- Screenshot your current build before you first load a save in the Remaster if you’ll want to reconstruct its spirit.
- Expect day-one respec freedom: with your points reset, your first session is a build laboratory, and the Potion of Clearance question matters less than usual until the new economy is understood.
- Plan paths, not point totals: because new skills unlock through prerequisites, the order you take skills matters more than how many points you pour into one branch.
- Old builds (Euphoria, full-alchemy, whirl-spam) were made for the old trees, and with renamed skills and rebalanced values their names and numbers may not match; assume the meta resets and enjoy being early to the new one. Now that the Remaster is out (it launched September 29), we are writing our build guides from the live trees.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my level change? No, levels carry; only the skill allocation resets.
Are Places of Power points still a thing? Ability point sources haven’t been re-detailed; the change list doesn’t mention them, and points-from-progression is core enough to expect survival in some form.
Why were my skill points reset? Because the system itself changed. CD Projekt Red’s change list says skills now sit in a skill tree with three ranks each and unlock through prerequisites, and that “as a result of these changes, your skill points have been reset.”
Do both expansions’ skills get reworked too? The revamp is described game-wide; mutation specifics are the open question flagged above.
When will you publish actual build guides? The first one is live: our best early skills and build guide is written from the new trees. Bookmark our Witcher 3 guide hub, where each new build guide appears as it goes live.
