The Hall of Thanes is beneath Ironforge in World of Warcraft: Forever. To reach it, go to the High Seat, King Magni Bronzebeard’s throne room off the Great Forge, turn left inside, and follow the cobweb-covered passage down through Old Ironforge to a bridge over the lava, where the entrance is. It is a new five-player dungeon for levels 13 to 18.
It is the Alliance’s first dungeon, at the same level as the Horde’s Ragefire Chasm, and the way in is easy to miss. Below we cover the route down step by step, what level to be, the five quests and where they start, the bosses, and how night elves, Skyborne and the Horde get there. Facts are checked against Blizzard’s dungeon overview and its WoW Forever posts as of November 7, three days after launch.
What the Hall of Thanes Is
Blizzard describes it as the final resting place of dwarven monarchs, beneath Ironforge. Its setup: Dark Iron dwarves are suspected of breaking into the sacred halls, and you go in to drive them out and find out what has stirred in the ancient halls, where ghostly whispers still echo. The level range, from Blizzard’s own list, is 13 to 18, the same as Ragefire Chasm.

How to Get to the Hall of Thanes, Step by Step
- Go to the Great Forge in the middle of Ironforge.
- Face the High Seat, the throne room where King Magni Bronzebeard sits, and walk in.
- Turn left inside the throne room. A passage covered in cobwebs leads downward.
- Follow it down into Old Ironforge, a long-sealed part of the city with winding stairs and stone walkways. Partway down, the path splits: the upper way leads to a quest giver, and the crumbling path down leads to the dungeon.
- Watch your footing. Old Ironforge is built over lava, and falling in kills you. The only way out is to release and run back as a ghost or wait for a resurrection.
- Cross to the bridge. The dungeon entrance is at the bridge, with another quest giver beside it.
If you get turned around, a city guard can point you to the High Seat. Blizzard’s new player’s starter guide says guards give directions and mark the spot on your map.
Hall of Thanes Quests
| Quest | Where it starts | What it asks |
|---|---|---|
| Important Heirlooms | Thom Filch, by the bridge at the entrance | Recover dwarven heirlooms from inside |
| The Restless Dead | Afadra Dunwall, up the side path in Old Ironforge | Put the restless spirits inside to rest |
| An Ancient Grudge | A ghostly attendant, just inside the dungeon | Defeat Faldrim Anvilmar |
| Old Ironforge Incursion | A map dropped by Dark Iron Spies in Dun Morogh | Bring Durgen Dirgehammer’s head to King Magni |
| The Treaty of Understanding | A tablet in the Reliquary of Kings | Take it to King Magni |
Old Ironforge Incursion takes the most setup. It starts outside the city: Earthseer Farsen in Dun Morogh sends you after Dark Iron Spies, and one of them drops the Dark Iron Map that starts the dungeon quest. Do Farsen’s quest while you are leveling in Dun Morogh, and you will have the dungeon quest ready before your first run.
Two quests start inside. An Ancient Grudge comes from a spirit just past the first room, and The Treaty of Understanding comes from a tablet behind a vault door in the final room, so you only finish that one after the run, back in Magni’s throne room.
The Bosses
The Hall of Thanes has four bosses: Faldrim Anvilmar, Magmatus, Plunder and Durgen Dirgehammer. Faldrim is the target of An Ancient Grudge and Durgen’s head is the Old Ironforge Incursion objective, so keep the people with those quests alive for both. Durgen is the last of them, and the treaty tablet is in the same final room, the Reliquary of Kings.
Getting There From Elsewhere
Humans, gnomes and dwarves start next door. Stormwind characters take the Deeprun Tram to Ironforge.
Night elves come by sea. Take the boat from Rut’theran Village to Auberdine, then the ship to Menethil Harbor in the Wetlands and ride east through Loch Modan into Dun Morogh, or the ship to Stormwind and the Deeprun Tram from there. Our guide to getting to Darnassus from Stormwind explains the ships, run in reverse.
Skyborne on the Alliance side leave Zephras Isle by skyboat for Dalaran in the Alterac Mountains and travel on to Ironforge from there; our guide to getting to Zephras Isle covers that end.
Horde: Blizzard says Horde groups have to travel into Alliance territory, and in this case that means into Ironforge itself and past its guards to the king’s throne room. It is not a realistic leveling dungeon for the Horde. Their dungeon at the same level is Ragefire Chasm in Orgrimmar.
How to Get a Group
There is no automatic Dungeon Finder in WoW Forever, so the group meets at the entrance. Our guide to whether there is a Dungeon Finder shows how the Group Finder listings work; gather in the throne room and walk down together, so nobody falls into the lava alone.
Groups need a tank and a healer, and our guides to the best tank class and the best healer class cover who can fill each role. While you are in Ironforge, its weapon master in the Military Ward teaches axes, maces and guns; our guide to where to train weapon skills has the full list. Every WoW Forever guide we have is on our World of Warcraft hub.
