WoW Forever: How to Sit by the Campfire

Players resting around a campfire beside a canvas tent in a forest in World of Warcraft: Forever

To sit by the campfire in World of Warcraft: Forever, stand right next to the fire (not in it), press X or type /sit in chat, and stay seated for a full minute. Sitting ticks off the optional “Sit near the campfire” step of The Great Outdoors within seconds and gives you a Welcoming Campfire buff; keep still until its minute is up and you gain Boosted Rest, the step the quest actually needs. The Great Outdoors is the early quest Blizzard uses to introduce the Camping system, and the same sit works at any campfire later on.

Below: where the quest starts, what each step looks like, every way to sit, including on a controller, which poses count, and what to try if the quest will not complete. We did The Great Outdoors ourselves on a Night Elf Hunter on November 7, and the rest is checked against Blizzard’s camping article, its gamepad guide and its WoW Forever development notes as of November 5, the day after launch.

Why the Quest Asks You to Sit

Blizzard’s camping article says “early in your adventures, a simple quest introduces the Camping system” and that to get campsite buffs, players “need to sit by the campfire briefly and become rested.” The Great Outdoors is that quest. It has two objectives: “Sit near the campfire,” which the quest marks as optional, and “Gain the Boosted Rest buff,” which is the one that completes it.

Sitting is the whole mechanic. Blizzard says players sitting or crafting at a campsite for at least one minute gain the benefits of the camp features around it, so the quest is teaching you the habit you will use at every campsite for the rest of the game. Our guide to how camping works covers the buffs, the camp features professions add and the shared cooldown.

How It Went on Our Night Elf

On our Night Elf Hunter, The Great Outdoors came from Lyreena Duskblade, an Adventurer camped with a tent and a campfire just outside Dolanaar in Teldrassil, at about 57.6, 56.7 on the map. The quest before it, The Adventurer, has you bring her a journal. As she hands over The Great Outdoors she explains that “all you need to start a camp of your own is a basic campfire,” that cooks can teach you to make one, and that “sufficiently skilled leatherworkers” can place a tent like the one behind her.

We sat down by her fire at level 6. “Sit near the campfire” ticked over within seconds, and a buff called Welcoming Campfire appeared with a countdown. Its tooltip reads: “Grants various camp benefits after 1 min spent sitting near the campfire. You may also craft using tradeskills, as long as you do not move.” We stayed put until the minute ran out, the chat said “You feel rested,” and Lyreena took the quest back. She then offered two more quests, Camping 101: Cooking and Camping 101: Skinning; our Hunter had already learned both professions.

Every Way to Sit

  • The sit key: X. X is the default key for Sit/Move Down. Press it once to sit; press it again or move to stand up. If X does something else, you or an addon has rebound it: check Game Menu, Options, Keybindings, under the movement keys.
  • The /sit command. Press Enter to open chat, type /sit and press Enter. It does the same thing as the key and works whatever your keybindings are.
  • Other poses count too. Blizzard’s development notes say you get the campfire buff while “sitting, sitting in a chair, sleeping, lying down, or using the kneeling emote.” So /sleep and /kneel work, and so does sitting on a Camp Chair someone has placed at the camp.
  • You can keep busy while you wait. The same notes say players can buff each other, cast and craft while waiting for campfire buffs, and Blizzard fixed crafting and casting standing you up. Using an ability that moves you or attacking something will still get you up.

How to Sit With a Controller

Blizzard’s gamepad guide lists X for Interact, A for Jump, B for Back and Y for Inspect (Xbox names), and no button for sitting. Gamepad support is in beta, and Blizzard says to keep a keyboard within reach for typing in chat. The easiest controller method is a one-time macro:

  1. Type /macro in chat to open the macro window.
  2. Click New, name it Sit, pick any icon and type /sit in the box.
  3. Drag the new macro onto one of your gamepad action bar slots. Blizzard’s development notes confirm macros can sit on gamepad action bars.
  4. Press that button at any campfire to sit.

You need a keyboard to make the macro, but only once.

Where to Stand

Stand close enough that the fire is right beside you, but not on top of it. Blizzard’s notes say campfires no longer hurt players below level 5 and do reduced damage to players under 90% health, which means they can still hurt, and taking damage is no way to rest. If you are standing in the flames, take a step back, then sit.

If someone else’s campfire is nearby, you can use it too: Blizzard describes a placed Basic Campfire as a shared campsite where nearby players rest and gain benefits.

If the Step Will Not Tick Over

You have been sitting a minute or more and the quest is not done. First check which line is stuck: “Sit near the campfire” is optional, and the one that completes the quest is “Gain the Boosted Rest buff.” Then work down this list:

  1. Check for the Welcoming Campfire buff. It appears within seconds of sitting, with a countdown. If it never shows up, you are too far from the fire, so move closer and sit again. Once it is up, keep still until the minute runs out.
  2. Clear your target. Press Escape until nothing is selected, then sit again.
  3. Sit with the command, then use it again. Type /sit, and while you are still sitting, type /sit once more.
  4. Try a different pose. /sleep or /kneel also count for the buff, as above.
  5. Talk to the quest giver anyway. Once you have the buff, speak to the quest giver at the campfire. If the game offers to complete the quest, take it.
  6. Abandon and pick the quest up again, or log out and back in, then repeat the steps above.

As of November 5, Blizzard has not listed this step in its known issues. If it still will not complete, report it in Blizzard’s WoW Forever Bug Report forum with your character’s full name and ruleset, which Blizzard asks for, and the exact steps you took. You can keep leveling in the meantime and come back to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the sit key in WoW Forever? X, by default. It is the Sit/Move Down binding, and you can change it under Game Menu, Options, Keybindings.

How do I sit near the campfire for The Great Outdoors? Stand next to the fire, press X or type /sit, and stay seated for a full minute. A Welcoming Campfire buff appears right away, and when its minute is up you gain Boosted Rest, the quest’s required step.

How long do I have to sit at the campfire? At least one minute. Blizzard says players sitting or crafting at a campsite for at least a minute gain the camp benefits, and the Welcoming Campfire buff you get on sitting says the same: its benefits arrive “after 1 min spent sitting near the campfire.”

How do I sit with a controller in WoW Forever? The gamepad layout has no sit button. Make a macro with /sit in it and drag it onto a gamepad action bar slot.

Why didn’t sitting at the campfire complete my quest? The step that counts is Boosted Rest, not the optional sit, so check that the Welcoming Campfire buff appeared and that you kept still for its full minute. If you did, clear your target, type /sit twice, try /sleep or /kneel, or talk to the quest giver to see if it offers to complete the quest.
