Talents unlock at level 10 in World of Warcraft: Forever: you get your first talent point then and one more each level after, as in the original game, for 51 points by level 60. The big milestone talents open at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points spent in one tree, which lands at levels 20, 25, 30 and 40 for a character who puts every point into the same tree.
Blizzard confirms the level 10 start and the milestones in its class deep dives. Below is the full timeline, what the milestone (“gold medal”) talents are, how the Talented Legacy perk moves everything five levels earlier, and the other talent unlocks to plan around. Checked November 7, three days after launch.
When Each Talent Tier Unlocks
Blizzard’s Hunter and Druid deep dive, which repeats the rules for every class, says: “Starting at level 10, talents become available and keep the familiar structure,” with “one-point milestone talents at 11, 21, and 31 points, now joined by a new 16-point milestone.”
| Points spent in one tree | Earliest level (normal) | Earliest level (with Talented) | What opens |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 10 | 5 | Your first talent |
| 11 | 20 | 15 | The 11-point milestone talent |
| 16 | 25 | 20 | The new 16-point milestone talent |
| 21 | 30 | 25 | The 21-point milestone talent |
| 31 | 40 | 35 | The 31-point milestone talent |
| 51 | 60 | 55 | Every point you will have at the cap |
Each tree still opens one row at a time, five points per row, so the levels above only work if you spend every point in the same tree on the way up. Split your points and the milestones arrive later.
What the Milestone Talents Are
Blizzard’s development notes call the milestone picks “gold medal” talents, and they are where Forever’s class changes are most visible. A few examples from its notes:
- Mage, Arcane Wrath: a “new 16-point gold medal talent,” a Fireball-like spell that also scales with your maximum Mana.
- Shaman, Elemental: Elemental Mastery returned in October as “the new 31-point gold medal talent,” and the November 2 notes renamed it Lightning Mastery. The same notes removed Lava Burst and put Call of Thunder in its place, which raises the critical strike chance of Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning by 5%.
- Shaman, Earthbound: moved to the fourth row as “the 16-point gold medal talent.”
- Druid, Insect Swarm: a new 16-point gold medal talent in Balance.
Because the 16-point milestone is new, it gives every spec a power spike around level 25, which the original game did not have. Blizzard’s November 2 development notes also reworked several talents across the classes right before launch, and Blizzard says a “large tuning pass” will follow once enough players have leveled past 30, so check the trees again after big patches.
The Talented Perk: Talents Five Levels Early
The Legacy system has a perk that changes the table above. Blizzard’s Legacy system overview says Talented “allows players to unlock talent points up to 5 levels lower than normal.” With it, your first talent can come as early as level 5, the 31-point talent at 35, and your last point at 55.
The catch is the order: the Legacy system only opens once you earn your first Legacy Point, usually by reaching level 25 on any character. So Talented mostly helps your second character and every one after it. Our guide to getting Legacy Points explains how to unlock the system, and our guide to respecing Legacy Points covers what happens to your talents if you drop Talented later.
Other Talent Unlocks to Plan Around
- Level 10, first point: spend it the moment you ding. Open the talent window from the menu bar (N by default).
- Level 40, Dual Specialization: Blizzard’s deep dives say “Dual Specialization also becomes available at level 40.” Our dual spec guide covers how it works.
- Any time, a reset: “To change your talents (including Legacy talents), you’ll need to visit a class trainer in one of the major cities.” The fee rises if you reset again soon after; our talent reset guide has the details.
- Hunters, level 10 too: Hunters also get their pet at 10, so the first talent point and the taming quest arrive together. Our guide to taming a Hunter pet walks through it.
How to Plan Your First Talents
- Pick one tree for leveling and put every point there until the 31-point milestone. Those milestones are the biggest jumps in power.
- Take talents that help solo play first: damage, mana efficiency and survival. Leave group-only utility for later or for a second spec.
- Plan before you spend. Resets cost gold and need a trip to a city trainer.
- Recheck at 40. With Dual Specialization, a hybrid can keep a leveling build and a dungeon build. Our best class for new players shows which classes can fill two roles.
