You get into the Bank of Tyrus in Gears of War: E-Day by following the story: the bank opens once Act 2, Chapter 2 (Hold the Line) gives you the main objective Find Dr. Dalia Fabbri, which arrives after Get Mags’ Meds. Go back to the bank on the town square and head inside. There is no key, side entrance or special item involved.
The confusion comes from the map. The bank’s collectible shows up on your map long before the doors open, so players arrive early, find them locked and start hunting for another way in. Below we cover exactly when it opens, what happens inside, and the collectible and Hard Case in the vault that are easy to walk past. Story details here stop at the bank itself, with no spoilers beyond Act 2.
Why the Bank of Tyrus Is Locked
Act 2’s second chapter drops Bravo Squad into one of Gears of War: E-Day‘s open districts of Kalona. As Xbox’s launch tips post puts it, the Campaign is primarily linear, but the city has “large pockets of open space with multiple pathways towards the next objective.” You can wander the district freely, and collectible markers can show up on your map before you can reach them.
The Bank of Tyrus is part of the main story, though, not a side area. Its doors stay shut until the story sends you inside, so the War Savings Bond marker can sit on your map for a long stretch of the chapter with no visible route to it. Nothing is wrong with your game: you are just early. There is no need to restart the chapter or look for a hidden entrance.
Step-by-Step: How to Get Into the Bank of Tyrus
- Play on through Act 2, Chapter 2. Keep following the main objective markers through the district.
- Complete Get Mags’ Meds. This main objective is what sets up the bank. Follow its marker and finish it.
- Watch for Find Dr. Dalia Fabbri. Once the objective changes to this, the bank is open.
- Return to the bank on the town square and head inside.
What Happens Inside the Bank
Inside, a bank employee leads you through the lobby to the manager, who takes you upstairs to his office. Interacting with the office door triggers a cutscene, and then the Locust come for the building: you have to defend the bank until the area is clear.
When the fight ends, head back down to the vault room and use the vault controls to open it. Opening the vault moves the story on, so collect everything inside before you leave.
The Collectible and Hard Case in the Vault
The vault holds two things worth stopping for:
| Item | Where | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| War Savings Bond (collectible) | Inside the vault | Counts toward Memories From E-Day |
| Hard Case | Inside the vault | Counts toward Relax. I’m the Map. |
Hard Cases hold upgrades for your gear, and mods change how a gun handles in the Campaign as well as Horde Siege; our weapon mods guide explains how they work, and our best weapons guide covers which guns to build around.
The two achievements in the table are Memories From E-Day (find all Collectibles in the Campaign) and Relax. I’m the Map. (discover all Hard Cases). Our achievement list has every other one.
If You Already Left Without Them
You can go back. The Coalition’s October 14 patch notes say players “can start a new campaign from a completed mission and re-play the mission,” which is how to return to Act 2, Chapter 2 without replaying the whole story. The same patch fixed “multiple issues causing parts of War Journal and Achievement progress not to track,” and The Coalition’s November 2 update fixed missing War Journal entries and completed achievements, which it says are granted the next time you sign in. Sign in first, then check the War Journal before you replay: the game now shows which collectibles are still missing.
If you play the chapter in co-op, the patch also fixed progress not being tracked in co-op sessions; our co-op guide covers how joining a friend’s campaign works.
Tips for the Rest of Hold the Line
- Clear side jobs while the district is open. Hold the Line is packed with secondary objectives, and the Xbox post says they often reward a weapon mod. One of them, Lone Wolf, starts from an apartment building near the library later in the chapter.
- Follow the chime. Xbox’s launch post says a sharp chime when you enter a new area means a collectible is nearby. If you turned the chime off with the October 14 patch’s new setting, lean on the map markers instead.
- Reload a checkpoint if an encounter stalls. The Coalition’s launch notes recommend reloading a checkpoint if you get blocked at an encounter or objective.
Our campaign length guide covers how long the rest of the story runs, and every other guide is on our Gears of War: E-Day hub.
