There are two ways to become a Spellcaster in The Sims 4: pick the Spellcaster occult in Create a Sim, or take an ordinary Sim through the portal in Glimmerbrook to the Magic Realm and ask one of the three Sages to teach them magic, which starts a short quest. Both need the Realm of Magic game pack. Below we cover the pack, both routes, what the Sages and their schools do, how ranks and the charge meter work, and the patches since 2025 that changed spellcaster play.
What You Need
Realm of Magic is a game pack (not an expansion) released September 10, 2019, and its store description is the developer’s own summary of the system: “Learn the craft of wizardry, summon a familiar for protection… Study up on classic teachings, learn from sorcerous mentors, and become a Spellcaster by completing a quest.” The pack adds the world of Glimmerbrook, the floating Magic Realm behind its “secret portal”, spells, potions, wands, brooms and familiars.
It works alongside the other occults. A Sim can only be one occult type at a time, so if yours is already a vampire, werewolf, mermaid or fairy, they have to be cured first. Our guides on becoming a vampire and becoming a fairy cover the other two magical options.
Route One: Create a Sim
Open Create a Sim, click the plus button to add a Sim, and pick the Spellcaster option from the occult list (the same menu that offers Vampires, Aliens and the rest depending on your packs). A Spellcaster made this way starts at the lowest rank with no spells known, so the Create a Sim route only skips the quest, not the learning. On console, the occult choice sits in the same add-Sim menu; the layout differs but the option is identical.
Since the July 1, 2025 update, per the patch notes, the occult plumbob shows for infant, toddler and child Spellcasters, so a magical family’s youngest members are visibly marked. The same note removed alien eyebrows from child Spellcasters in CAS.
Route Two: The Sages’ Quest
For an existing Sim:
- Go to Glimmerbrook. Travel there from the map, then walk to the portal by the waterfall at the edge of the world. Click it and choose the option to enter the Magic Realm.
- Find a Sage. Three Sages wait in the realm’s main hall, one per school of magic. Player guides and the pack’s own character bios give them as Simeon Silversweater (Practical), L. Faba (Mischief) and Morgyn Ember (Untamed); the November 4, 2025 patch notes confirm “Practical and Mischief Sages” as the ones who teach spells by rank. The 2025 version of this guide had the last two swapped.
- Ask to learn magic. The Sage sets the quest the developer refers to: gather a handful of glowing motes of magic floating around the realm and bring them back. Motes are scattered and respawn, so it takes a few minutes of walking.
- Complete the Rite of Ascension. Return the motes and the Sage performs the rite. Your Sim is now an Apprentice Spellcaster.
Nothing in the patch notes since 2025 has changed this quest. Verified against the notes, the only realm-related fix is the November 2025 one: the game now tells you plainly when your rank is too low to learn a Sage’s next spell, where before the message was wrong.
Learning Spells, Ranks and Charge
Spells belong to three schools, Practical, Mischief and Untamed, and potions come from a cauldron. You learn them by asking the matching Sage, by reading tomes from the realm’s library, or by experimenting at the cauldron and through practice. Spellcasters rise through five ranks (Apprentice, Acolyte, Adept, Master, Virtuoso), earning talent points to spend on perks along the way; the Sages gate their higher spells behind rank, which is what the November 2025 fix was about.
Casting builds Spellcaster Charge. A little charge boosts spells; too much and the Sim overcharges, with failed spells, curses and, at the extreme, death. Curses are a real system: the July 2025 notes fixed the Night Wraith so it “now spawns for Spellcasters with the Curse of the Night Wraith”, meaning cursed Sims are haunted as designed. Potions from the cauldron remove curses.
Two more official notes for the current build. The November 4, 2025 update let Sims “purchase or win all wand recolors”, so every wand color is obtainable. And since the burglar returned in February 2025, the developer’s burglar dev diary says Spellcasters get “everything from confusion spells to full-on transformations” against Robin Banks, which we cover in our Robin Banks guide.
Familiars, Duels and the Realm Itself
The pack lets your Sim bind a familiar, “a dragon, a fairy, or the familiar that best suits your Sim’s personality”, per the developer, which protects them from death by overcharge and can be named. Duels against other Spellcasters in the realm are a fast way to earn experience once you have a few spells. The realm also has shops for wands, brooms and ingredients, and it is one of the game’s hidden areas, so if you like that side of things our guide to secret areas and hidden lots lists the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I become a Spellcaster without Realm of Magic? No. Spellcasters, Glimmerbrook and the Magic Realm all belong to the game pack.
Can a vampire also be a Spellcaster? No. A Sim holds one occult type at a time. Cure the vampirism first, then do the Sages’ quest.
Can children be Spellcasters? Yes. Child, toddler and infant Spellcasters exist in the current build, and since July 2025 they show the occult plumbob.
What happens if my Spellcaster overcharges? Spells fail, curses can land, and at full charge the Sim can die. A bound familiar prevents that death, and cauldron potions remove curses.
Where is the portal to the Magic Realm? By the waterfall at the edge of Glimmerbrook. Click it to enter; higher-rank Spellcasters can also cast their way there.
