WoW Forever: How Login Queues Work

Horde and Alliance heroes, including a tauren and a dwarf, look out over a valley in official World of Warcraft: Forever art

When the login servers for World of Warcraft: Forever are full, the game puts you in a line the moment you log in: a “Login Servers are Full” window shows your position in queue and an estimated time, and the game lets you in on its own when you reach the front. You do not need to click anything, but closing the game or losing your connection sends you to the back of the line.

Blizzard has not published queue limits or typical wait times, so the estimate in that window is the only number that applies to you. Below: what each part of the queue window means, why picking another ruleset does not get you around it, what Blizzard has said about capacity since launch, and how to avoid losing your place. Checked against Blizzard’s launch posts, its staff replies and its server status pages as of November 5, the day after WoW Forever launched.

What the Queue Window Tells You

The window has three lines:

  • Login Servers are Full. The servers are up and at capacity for logins right now. It is not an outage.
  • Position in queue. How many players are ahead of you. It counts down as players ahead of you get in or leave the line.
  • Estimated time. The game’s estimate, in minutes, of how long until you are in. It is recalculated as the line moves, so it can jump around, especially when a lot of players join or leave at once.

When you reach the front, the window changes to “Retrieving server information” and then takes you on to your rulesets and characters. Leave the game open and it finishes on its own.

Why Switching Rulesets Does Not Skip the Line

WoW Forever has no realms. You choose a ruleset (Normal, PvP, Roleplay or Roleplay PvP), and Blizzard says each one “functions as a broad player ecosystem rather than a single traditional realm,” with layers splitting the players across copies of the world. Our guides to how many servers WoW Forever has and how layers work explain the setup.

That changes how queues work compared with older versions of WoW. In those, the queue belonged to a realm, so moving to a quieter realm got you in faster. In WoW Forever, the login queue comes before you pick a ruleset or a character, so there is no quieter realm to move to, and making a character on a different ruleset does not get you in sooner. If you are still deciding where to play, our ruleset guide covers the choice, and a character cannot move to another ruleset later.

What Blizzard Has Said About Capacity

As of November 5, Blizzard has said nothing about queue lengths or a population limit for launch week. What it has said:

  • One global launch. WoW Forever opened in every region at the same moment, 3:00 p.m. PST on November 4 (6:00 p.m. Eastern), per Blizzard’s launch time post. Our launch time guide has every region.
  • The hardware behind it. On launch night, Blizzard’s @Warcraft account said WoW Forever was “running on: 3,924 Virtual Machines, 251,136 GB of Memory, 70,480 CPU Cores.”
  • Stress testing ahead of launch. Blizzard ran an open stress test on October 21 on WoW Forever’s regional hardware.
  • Population tuning after launch. On November 5, Blizzard’s Aggrend said on the official forums that the team was aware of “some issues with certain areas not feeling as populated as they should” and would be “tweaking some numbers tomorrow.” That is about how full the world feels once you are in, not the login line, but it shows Blizzard is still adjusting.

During the beta, Blizzard raised the population cap twice and fixed a bug that made the queue fill up, as our beta population cap story covers.

What Can Happen After the Queue

Getting through the line does not always mean getting straight into the world.

  • “This ruleset is temporarily unavailable.” On launch night this showed on rulesets after players got through the queue. That ruleset is not taking logins at that moment. Wait a few minutes and try again, and check Blizzard’s WoW Forever server status page (Europe has its own), which lists each ruleset as up or down, though not how busy it is.
  • Character creation locks. A ruleset can stop new characters for one faction to keep the population balanced. Our guide to fixing character creation errors covers every message.
  • A disconnect code. If you get kicked with WOW51900319, our WOW51900319 guide covers it.

If You Disconnect While in Line

A disconnect, a crash or closing the game costs you your place. You log in again and start at the back. Blizzard’s customer support said in 2022 that it has “no means of placing anyone back in queue or directly into the game,” in a forum reply, so a ticket will not get your spot back.

How to Keep Your Spot

  1. Leave the game open. Closing it to “refresh” the queue puts you at the back.
  2. Stop your PC from sleeping. In Windows, set Screen and sleep to Never under Settings, System, Power while you wait, or the connection drops when the PC sleeps.
  3. Use a wired connection if you can, and pause big downloads, streaming and other games updating.
  4. Make sure your subscription or Game Time is active before you queue. WoW Forever needs one, as our guide to whether WoW Forever is free explains. In Classic’s 2019 launch queues, Blizzard’s support team said in a forum reply that an account whose Game Time purchase was still processing counted as a trial account, and full accounts had priority in the queue. Blizzard has not said whether WoW Forever works the same way, but checking that your order has gone through costs nothing.
  5. Queue up before your group plans to play, not at the agreed time.

Queue or Outage?

A queue means the servers are up and full. If you cannot reach the login screen at all, or everyone is being disconnected at once, that is an outage, and waiting in line will not help. Check @BlizzardCS on X and our guide to checking if WoW Forever is down. Every other guide is on our World of Warcraft hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the WoW Forever queue? Blizzard has not published wait times. The estimated time in your queue window is the game’s own estimate for your place in line, and it changes as the line moves.

Do I lose my place in the queue if I disconnect? Yes. You start again at the back, and Blizzard’s support team has said it cannot put players back in line.

Can I skip the queue by picking a different ruleset? No. The login queue comes before you choose a ruleset or a character, so another ruleset does not get you in faster.

Is a login queue the same as the servers being down? No. A queue means the servers are up and at capacity. An outage means you cannot connect at all.

What does “This ruleset is temporarily unavailable” mean? That ruleset is not accepting logins at that moment. Wait a few minutes, try again, and check Blizzard’s WoW Forever server status page.
