Activision debuted the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 campaign trailer at Tokyo Game Show on September 17, 2026, confirming the setting for this year’s entry: a full-scale North Korean invasion of the Korean Peninsula. The game launches October 23, 2026, with campaign early access starting a week earlier on October 16 for anyone who pre-orders digitally.
The Details
According to the official campaign trailer post, the story runs on two tracks. One follows a young squad of South Korean soldiers trying to survive on collapsing front lines as the invasion spreads. The other follows Captain Price, who is on the run and “wages a personal war from the shadows as he stays one step ahead of those hunting him.” Activision frames the stakes around a catastrophic weapon of war that is close to falling into the wrong hands.
Price being the hunted rather than the hunter is the notable shift here. Modern Warfare campaigns usually open with him running the operation, and this one starts with him outside the chain of command entirely.
Launch covers PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, with Campaign, Multiplayer, and DMZ all arriving on October 23. The October 16 early access window applies to the campaign only, and it is available on Xbox Series X and S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam, and Switch 2.
What This Means for Players
The Switch 2 version is the detail worth sitting with. A same-day Call of Duty launch on Nintendo hardware is new territory, and it lands on a console whose 2026 lineup we have been tracking all year in our best Switch 2 games of 2026. How MW4 performs there is the open question, because nothing else on that list is pushing this kind of technical load.
If you are deciding where to play, the platform rankings are worth a look first: our best Xbox games of 2026 and best PS5 games of 2026 both cover which versions of this year’s multiplatform releases came out ahead, which has been a real gap in several cases.
Waiting five weeks and want a shooter now? Our Bodycam guides cover a very different take on modern combat, built around realism rather than spectacle.
