Marvel’s Wolverine: How to Run and Sprint

Sprint in Marvel’s Wolverine by holding R2 with the left stick pushed forward. If holding a trigger for long stretches is uncomfortable, you do not have to: Sprint Mode offers four styles, including one where Logan sprints automatically without any input at all.

The Four Sprint Modes

Insomniac describes the setting as controlling the style of sprint between:

  • Hold – the default. Keep R2 held to sprint.
  • Toggle Hold – press once to start sprinting, press again to stop.
  • Toggle Release – press once to sprint, and it stops when you stop moving.
  • Auto – Logan sprints on his own once you have been moving for a moment.

There is a companion setting, Auto Sprint Delay, which sets how long you move before Auto engages. A third option, Sprint Overrides Crouch, controls whether sprinting automatically cancels a crouch, which matters in stealth sections where you may not want to stand up by accident.

Auto exists specifically for players who do a lot of running between objectives, and since this is a linear game where you move between waypoints rather than swinging across a city, it is worth trying even if you have no accessibility need. Our accessibility guide covers the full menu.

Note the trigger layout: R2 sprints and L2 holds for Special Techniques, so the two triggers are not the usual aim-and-fire pairing. Our combat guide has the full control list.

Sprinting Is Also an Attack

The reason to care about sprint beyond travel is a Technique called Savage Sprinter, which turns a sprint into an opening strike: a quick multi-hit area attack that damages nearby enemies and builds Rage on each hit.

It unlocks early and is widely recommended as one of the first Techniques to buy, because it converts the approach to a fight into free Rage, and Rage is what powers your healing and Last Stand. Our upgrades guide covers how Techniques are earned.

There is also an Adaptation named Enraging Sprint, listed on PlayStation’s own combat page, which players describe as converting incoming enemy fire into Rage while you sprint.

What Sprinting Is Not

There is no wall running in this game, despite what a few pre-release speculation pieces suggested. Traversal is climbing and clawing up surfaces, jumping on X, and leaping between rooftops, described by reviewers as Spider-Man-like fluidity without the webs.

The Leap Attack on Triangle is a combat move for closing distance onto an enemy, not a free traversal jump, so do not plan routes around it.

And since the game is linear rather than open world, sprinting is about crossing a level between objectives and collectible hunts rather than covering an open map. Our fast travel guide explains why there is no map to cross.
