To keep a car in GTA 4, park it in the marked residents’ parking space outside one of Niko’s safehouses and then save the game. Both halves matter. Parking alone does nothing permanent, and the missing save is the single most common reason a car players thought they had secured is gone when they next load in.
Finding the Parking Spaces
Each safehouse has parking on the street outside it, marked with yellow lines and a residents’ parking sign. These are the only spots that hold a vehicle. Parking anywhere else, including directly in front of the door, does not register.
Each space holds a maximum of two vehicles, cars or motorcycles.
Saving the Car Properly
Once the car is in the space, you need a game save to lock it in. That can be either:
- A manual save at the safehouse bed, or
- An autosave triggered by completing a mission.
Either works. What does not work is parking the car and then continuing to play without saving, because nothing about that vehicle has been written down yet.

The Two-Car Limit and How It Bites
The limit is two vehicles per safehouse parking space on load. During a continuous play session you may find you can leave up to four cars sitting there, which is misleading, because only two survive a reload. The game removes the surplus.
The practical rule: before you quit, make sure only the two cars you actually want are in the space. Anything extra is going to disappear, and the game does not ask which ones you would have preferred to keep.
Damage Repairs Itself
One genuinely generous detail: a damaged vehicle saved in a parking space repairs itself when Niko leaves the area or when you reload the game. You do not need to take a battered car to a respray before storing it. Park it, save, come back, and it is clean.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do cars saved at one safehouse appear at others? No. Each safehouse has its own parking, and a car stays where you left it.
Can you save a car you stole during a mission? Usually yes, once the mission has ended and the vehicle still exists. Mission-critical vehicles that the script removes are the exception.
Does this work the same in the episodes? The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony use the same safehouse parking system.
Why did my car vanish after a mission? If the mission moved you across the map or spawned you elsewhere, the car was likely never saved. Park and save before starting mission work.
