You get High Quality Pal Oil in Palworld by defeating or capturing Pals that carry it, with Mammorest the best single target at 5 to 10 per kill, or passively by assigning a Dumud or Dumud Gild to a Ranch at your base. You can also buy it from certain merchants. It is the only “Pal Oil” in the game, it is the main ingredient in Polymer, and it is a completely different item from Crude Oil. Below we cover the best Pals to farm, how to set up the ranch, where to buy it, and what it is for.
This guide is verified against Pocketpair’s official patch notes for Palworld up to v1.0.5. Drop amounts come from the community database, which tracks the current game files, and they apply on PC, PS5 and Xbox alike.
Pal Oil vs Crude Oil (The Common Mix-Up)
Players searching for “Pal Oil” want High Quality Pal Oil: there is no lower-grade version. Its in-game description reads “High-quality oil that can be extracted from Pal. Necessary for making Polymer.” It comes from Pals, not from the ground.
Crude Oil is the other oil. It comes from a Crude Oil Extractor built on an oil field, and 1.0 added a High-Pressure Crude Oil Extractor that pulls crude oil even without one. Pocketpair’s v1.0.3 patch made both extractors cheaper to build and faster. If a recipe asks for Crude Oil, no amount of Pal hunting will help, and the reverse is also true.
The Best Pals to Hunt for High Quality Pal Oil
Every Pal below drops High Quality Pal Oil on every defeat or capture, per the community database:
| Pal | High Quality Pal Oil per Pal |
|---|---|
| Mammorest (and Mammorest Cryst) | 5 to 10 |
| Eidrolon | 5 to 6 |
| Ophydia | 4 to 5 |
| Xenogard | 3 to 5 |
| Quivern | 3 |
| Elphidran, Digtoise, Jormuntide Ignis, Sibelyx Primo, Solmora, Loomen | 2 to 3 |
| Relaxaurus | 1 to 4 |
| Dumud, Woolipop, Flambelle | 1 |
Mammorest is the standout. The community wiki places an Alpha Mammorest near the starting area, around 189, -478, and notes that wild Mammorest roam lower-level zones at a much higher level than their neighbors, often in the 30s. Pocketpair rebalanced Pal habitats in 1.0, so check your Paldeck if one is not where older maps say.
If you are early and weak, Dumud and Woolipop give one each and are far safer targets. Capturing works as well as defeating, and captured Mammorest are useful: while ridden, one boosts your logging and mining efficiency.
Ranch It: Dumud and Dumud Gild
The hands-off method is a Ranch. Dumud’s Partner Skill includes “Sometimes drops High Quality Pal Oil when assigned to Ranch,” and it has done so since early access.
- Catch a Dumud. The community wiki lists wild ones in the desert areas around Twilight Dunes and Dry Sandy Beach.
- Build a Ranch at your base and move the Dumud into your base team from the Palbox so it can work there.
- Collect the oil at the Ranch, or let Pals with Transporting carry it to storage.
For more output, breed a Dumud Gild, a unique combo of Dumud and Eikthyrdeer Terra, per the community database. It also ranches High Quality Pal Oil and adds a small chance of Gold Coins. In 1.0, Pocketpair expanded work suitability to ten levels, increased ranch output, and added the Applied Ranching Handbook I to raise a Pal’s ranching level, so a well-trained oil Pal is worth far more than it used to be.
Buying High Quality Pal Oil
Several merchants stock it. The community wiki lists the Caravan Leader, the Red Shirt Merchants at Duneshelter and Fisherman’s Point, and random Wandering Merchants, at 300 Gold Coins each. 1.0 also added 18 kinds of specialized visiting merchants that appear at your base depending on its level, including sellers of Pal materials, and the database lists High Quality Pal Oil in several caravan merchants’ stock. The database also lists it as a guaranteed reward from the hard desert Pal Expedition and a common fishing pond catch. Buying is fine for topping up a recipe, but hunting or ranching is far cheaper at volume.
What You Need It For
- Polymer, the big one. The community database lists the current recipe as 2 High Quality Pal Oil and 1 Sulfur at a Production Assembly Line (Technology level 33). Polymer feeds firearms and a lot of mid-game gear.
- Guns and their schematics, from the Musket and Makeshift Handgun up to the Makeshift Assault Rifle.
- Base structures such as the Weapon Assembly Line, plus saddles like Mammorest’s own.
- Medicine and bait, including Advanced Recovery Meds, the Revival Potion and several fishing baits.
Higher gun schematics also ask for Ancient Civilization Parts, which our Ancient Civilization Cores guide separates from the rarer Cores. Before you commit points to the Production Assembly Line, our guide on how to get Technology Points covers where to find more.
