Minecraft Dungeons II: Best Weapons to Use Early

There is no single best early weapon in Minecraft Dungeons II: in the first hours, equip whichever melee and ranged weapons have the highest power and a random bonus that suits you, because new loot arrives fast. Once the Blacksmith unlocks, the best weapon becomes the one you enjoy most, since the Blacksmith can raise any item to your current power level.

This guide covers how weapons work in the sequel, the melee and ranged types, the unique weapons worth holding on to, and the upgrade habits that matter more than any single drop. It covers the launch version (September 29, 2026) on Xbox Series X|S, PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, where weapons work the same way. Mechanics are verified against Mojang’s and Xbox’s official material; reviewers’ and the community wiki’s reports are attributed, and unique weapon stats may change with patches.

Why No Single Weapon Wins Early

Mojang’s gameplay systems article says items “now have a chance to feature random effects, which can make the same type of piece feel different.” Design Director Laura de Llorens added on the Official Xbox Podcast that “there are effects” and “there are rarities.” Two swords can play very differently, so a named list matters less than reading the bonus on what just dropped.

Loot also comes quickly. AltChar’s reviewer notes that “every in-game activity rewards you with a new weapon, armour piece, talisman, or something else,” and PCGamesN’s reviewer spent early money at the merchant on “whatever had the highest numbers.” DayOne’s review warns that the town merchant’s stock “felt obsolete after the early game compared to even the most basic loot drops.” In short: upgrade freely early, and do not overspend.

Melee Weapon Types

You carry one melee weapon and one ranged weapon, and PCGamesN notes that pair “defines the moveset you have.” AltChar lists “swords, daggers, maces, hammers, spears, longswords,” each with its own animations and handling. The community wiki lists more types, including axes, greatswords, war hammers, double daggers, sickles, glaives, scythes, gauntlets, and even a shovel and a pickaxe. Per the wiki, melee attacks chain into a combo whose final hit deals the weapon’s maximum damage.

What to look for early:

  • Speed if you play solo. Reviewers describe solo boss fights as punishing: AltChar’s reviewer points to the dodge roll’s cooldown, and DayOne mentions one-shot kills. A quicker weapon lets you hit and get out between rolls.
  • Reach for groups. Heavier, wider weapons tend to handle the crowds that pile up in dungeons and rifts.
  • The jump slam. Mojang says jumping lets you “strike from above,” and PCGamesN reports that “all melee weapons can perform a slam attack from midair,” which it found most useful early for starting fights against groups.

Bows and Crossbows

Ranged combat got a major fix. Mojang confirms that “ammunition is now unlimited and recharges automatically over time,” so no weapon is a bad pick for lack of arrows. The community wiki describes two families: bows, which can be charged by holding the attack, and crossbows, which cannot be charged but fire continuously while you hold the button. It lists shortbows, longbows, trickbows, powerbows and greatbows, plus heavy, scatter and dual crossbows.

Early on, a ranged weapon earns its place during bosses, when stepping back and firing is safer than trading melee hits. Gaming Trend’s reviewer enchanted bows “to pierce multiple enemies,” which turns any bow into a crowd tool.

Unique Weapons Worth Holding On To

Unique weapons have fixed effects on top of their base stats. Official material has not published a list, but the community wiki names these, among others:

  • Pride of the Plains: melee attacks deal extra damage to your primary target, which suits boss fights.
  • Tornado Blade: swirling damage on every swing, suited to crowds.
  • Emerald Hammer: a chance at higher-rarity loot drops. Game Informer’s reviewer carried one into the endgame.
  • Soul Reaper: more souls gained, which charge your artifacts.
  • Stormcaller: boosts lightning damage.
  • Double Crossers (crossbow): each roll raises your next attack’s damage, stacking.
  • Creaking’s Reach (bow): extra damage from far away.

Where each drops early is not confirmed. What is confirmed is how to chase them: PCGamesN reports that many bosses “boast unique gear rewards,” and Xbox Wire’s launch-eve hands-on explains that a nearby Boss Totem restarts a beaten boss fight, “giving you a second, third, or 10th attempt at its loot drops.” Its example is the Witch boss in the northern Howling Woods.

The Upgrade Habit That Matters Most

The Blacksmith in Brave Haven is why an early favorite never has to be retired. Per Xbox Wire’s gamescom preview, any item can be upgraded “to the highest power level currently available to you,” and you can re-roll its built-in buff if it does not suit your build. Gaming Trend says emeralds from chests pay for Blacksmith and merchant services, and DayOne calls upgrade prices reasonable if you dismantle the loot you do not need.

PCGamesN also points to “a fairly tight money cap,” which it read as a push to use what you have. So the smart early loop is: equip the best drop, dismantle the rest, and once the Blacksmith opens, pick a weapon you like and keep it current.

Pair It With an Enchantment

Reviewers report each item holds one enchantment, applied from a reusable book at the Enchantsmith. Gaming Trend’s reviewer ran Fire Aspect on melee weapons, and Game Informer’s reviewer ended up with an Emerald Hammer that “electrocuted nearby enemies” and a crossbow that pierced through them. Our enchantments guide covers the system, and our builds guide shows how weapons fit a full loadout. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best early weapon in Minecraft Dungeons II?

There is no single one. Use the highest-power weapon with a bonus that suits you early on, then upgrade a favorite at the Blacksmith.

Do bows run out of arrows?

No. Mojang says ammunition is unlimited and recharges automatically over time.

Can you upgrade old weapons?

Yes. Per Xbox Wire, the Blacksmith raises any item to the highest power level available to you and can re-roll its built-in buff.

How do you farm a specific unique weapon?

Use a Boss Totem to restart a boss you have beaten. Xbox Wire says this gives repeat attempts at that boss’s loot drops.

Can every melee weapon do a jump attack?

PCGamesN reports that all melee weapons can perform a slam attack from midair.
