In Minecraft Dungeons II, enchantments come from Enchantment Books you find in the world, and each book goes into a permanent library you can draw on again and again. You then visit the Enchantsmith, pay a fee, and apply that enchantment to the piece of gear you choose, instead of hoping the right enchantment rolls on a drop the way it did in the first game.
This guide covers where books come from, what enchanting costs, the one-per-item limit, how upgrades work, and every enchantment Mojang and Xbox have named so far. It covers the launch version (September 29, 2026), which works the same on Xbox Series X|S, PC, PS5, Switch and Switch 2. There are no patch notes yet, so details are verified against Mojang’s and Xbox’s official material, with reviewer and player-guide reports attributed.
How Enchanting Works in Dungeons II
Mojang’s gameplay systems breakdown lays out the loop. As you travel, you pick up enchantment books “containing a unique enchantment.” Each one is “added to a personal library of enchantments, which can be used at the local enchantsmith to apply an effect on any gear slot of a player’s choice.” The point, per Mojang, is control: you no longer rely on whatever happens to roll on a piece of loot.
Three details make the library generous:
- Books are not used up. Gaming Trend’s review describes books that “are able to be reused over and over again, and on multiple items at once,” and PCGamesN’s review says unlocked enchantments stay “available permanently to use on gear as you wish.”
- The same enchantment can stack across items. Xbox Wire singles out Somersault, which grants extra dodge rolls, as an enchantment that “can be stacked.”
- Everything is summarized in one menu. The “Effects and Enchantments” menu, seen by Xbox Wire at gamescom, gathers every effect from your weapons, armor and talismans into a single list.
Where to Find Enchantment Books
Xbox Wire’s launch-eve hands-on names Rifts and Dungeons as the main source. These side encounters are “packed with foes and loot chests,” and their rewards “can also include Enchantment Books.” The writer’s advice was to build your library “with repeated dungeon runs you find on the world map.”
Reviewers add two more sources. PCGamesN’s reviewer found books “some at specific story moments, others as random drops,” and says side quests sometimes hand out enchantment books as rewards. With one connected world replacing the old mission select (see our launch news), detours into dungeons and rifts fill most of your library. Many rifts also lead into the new dimension, which our Sift guide covers.
The Enchantsmith itself unlocks through the story. Player guides report it arrives with a main quest called Training With the Enchantsmith, somewhere in the mid-teens of hero level for players who explore along the way.
What Enchanting Costs
At gamescom, Xbox Wire described bringing books to the Enchantsmith in Brave Haven “with a down payment of currency dropped by new Soul Corrupted enemies.” Xbox’s launch coverage names the currency that fits that description: Echo Shards, “used to upgrade Merchants, Blacksmiths, and equipment,” which also drop in Rifts and Dungeons. Player guides agree that enchanting spends Echo Shards.
Player guides describe a second limit as well: Enchantment Points, which grow as your hero levels up and cap how many enchantments, and how strong, you can run at once. Mojang has not published point values.
One Enchantment per Item, and Upgrading It
The biggest change from the first game is the per-item cap. PCGamesN’s review states “you can only equip one per item this time around,” and the community wiki lists the same rule. The trade-off is more items to enchant: Mojang doubled combat slots from six to twelve, including four separate armor pieces, so a full loadout still carries plenty of effects. Our builds guide breaks down every slot.
Compatibility matters too. Mojang says you pick the gear slot, but player guides and the community wiki group enchantments by gear type (melee weapons, ranged weapons and armor), so a given book is only offered on matching items. Reviewers only describe enchanting weapons and armor, so artifacts and talismans may not qualify.
Mojang also says enchantments “can also be upgraded and leveled up over time.” Player guides report three levels per enchantment, with each level strengthening the effect, and say upgrades open up as you spend Echo Shards raising the Enchantsmith’s own level.
Confirmed Enchantments So Far
Only a handful are named in official material or reviews so far:
| Enchantment | Effect | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Healing Smite | Chance to create a healing circle around you after defeating an enemy | Xbox Wire |
| Ender Mines | Deploys exploding crystals | Xbox Wire |
| Somersault | Additional dodge rolls; can be stacked | Xbox Wire |
| Fire Aspect | Adds fire to melee attacks | Gaming Trend review |
Xbox Wire’s gamescom preview also described, without naming them, enchantments that let you dodge roll more often, fire arrows with every dodge roll, and add fire to all your arrows. The community wiki lists roughly two dozen more, including names returning from the first game such as Dynamo, Swirling and Thundering, but their exact effects in the sequel are not yet on any official page.
How to Build Around Enchantments
Because books are reusable and each item holds one, enchanting is about combinations rather than chasing a perfect drop. Previews and reviews show how that plays out:
- Dodge-focused archer. At gamescom, Xbox Wire’s writer paired extra dodge rolls with arrows fired on every roll and fire arrows, creating “an entire new ability synergy” from a single menu.
- Companion build. In Xbox’s June demo, a writer paired a talisman that summons a dog with a weapon enchantment that left regeneration spots when enemies died, healing hero and pet together.
- Tank. Game Informer’s reviewer enchanted every armor piece to either heal or make potions more effective.
Early on, spend your first books on gear you plan to keep. The Blacksmith can raise any item to your current power level, so an enchanted favorite never has to be retired. Frequently Asked Questions
How do you enchant gear in Minecraft Dungeons II?
Find an Enchantment Book, then visit the Enchantsmith and pay the fee to apply that enchantment to a compatible item. The book stays in your library for reuse.
Are Enchantment Books used up when you apply them?
No. Mojang describes a personal library, and reviewers report the same book can be applied to several items.
How many enchantments can one item have?
One, per reviewers and the community wiki. Spreading enchantments across all of your gear slots is how you stack effects.
Where do Echo Shards come from?
Xbox Wire lists Rifts and Dungeons as sources, and describes the Enchantsmith’s currency as dropping from Soul Corrupted enemies.
Can you upgrade enchantments?
Yes. Mojang confirms enchantments level up over time, and player guides report three levels, unlocked by upgrading the Enchantsmith.
