Ghost Ship Games is aiming to release Deep Rock Galactic‘s Season 07 in December 2026, and on September 29, 2026 it confirmed that a free Season 08 and the game’s first paid expansion will follow together in summer 2027. The studio announced all three during Coffee Stain’s The Big Break Showcase and laid out the details in a Steam post the same day.
Season 07: Contingency Protocol
The story starts with gravitational anomalies on Hoxxes IV linked to fatal Drop Pod crashes. Ghost Ship calls the season “quite substantial” and flags everything below as a work in progress:
- About 20 new overclocks, this time for everyone’s secondary weapons, including Neurotoxin Minelets, Dragonfire Shells and Dismantler Rounds.
- A revised perk system: 11 new perks, reworks of some old ones, a new Perk Maintenance system modeled on Weapon Maintenance, and Perk Proficiency slots that soak up spare perk points for very small baseline stat buffs once every perk is unlocked.
- Tattoos, made from the ink of the Kadoc Inker, a passive creature that camouflages itself in the caves.
- Paintjobs for traversal tools.
- A season event that sends crews to Drop Pod crash sites to recover Memory Cores, with gravity that is still behaving strangely.
- A new free Performance Pass, led by the Ironclad Tactical weapon framework.
Season 08 and the Paid Expansion
Season 08 and the expansion are planned to launch at the same time. Season 08 stays free like every season before it, while the expansion is paid, which Ghost Ship acknowledges is “a first for us”. The studio says free content updates will continue, and that Season 08 will “likely be one of the smaller ones”. No name, price or content list has been shared yet.
Ghost Ship also teased a new boss for Deep Rock Galactic: Rogue Core, whose Update 3 is aimed at late October or early November, per its own Steam post.
What This Means for Players
Long-time players finally get a use for the pile of unspent perk points most of them are sitting on, and this round of overclocks is all about secondary weapons. The seasons stay free, and the paid expansion is most of a year out with no details, so wait for Ghost Ship to show it before deciding.
