You get hardwood in Coral Island mainly by chopping large logs with a Silver Axe or better, and the best early supply is the Mid Forest, where fresh large logs appear every day once you have completed six offerings at the Lake Temple. What You Need Hardwood For
Hardwood is the gate for most late upgrades, which is why it tends to run short in the middle of the game. The main uses, per the community wiki:

- Fishing pole and bug net: 5 for Gold and 20 for Osmium at the Beach Shack.
- Coop and barn upgrades: 20 to 60 per level at the Carpenter.
- Aging Barrel: 25 per barrel when you craft one yourself.
- The final farmhouse upgrade: 200, the single biggest sink in the game.
Which Axe You Need
Your axe tier decides what you can cut. The community wiki breaks it down like this:

1. Large Logs in the Mid Forest
The Mid Forest opens the day after you complete any six offerings at the Lake Temple, counted across all of its altars. New large logs spawn there daily, so a quick detour each morning builds a steady stock. Sources disagree on exactly how many appear per day (the community wiki says anywhere from one to seven), but all of them agree the supply resets every day. You need a Silver Axe or better.
2. One-Off Logs Around the Island
Per the community wiki, a single fallen log on the waterfall path east of the forest cavern gives five hardwood once. It does not come back, but it is a handy first batch the moment your Silver Axe is ready.
3. The Logs on Your Farm
Your farm starts with a few large logs of its own. They need a Gold Axe, although the community wiki notes that explosives also clear them. They never respawn, so treat them as a one-time bonus.
4. Mahogany and Poplar Trees in the Deep Forest
The Deep Forest opens the day after your fourteenth offering. Its mahogany and poplar trees drop hardwood when chopped, and the community wiki describes them as a supply that renews every season. Some player guides put a felled tree at roughly 15 to 20 hardwood. Better still, the wiki says both trees drop their own seeds when shaken or cut, so you can plant a grove on your farm and stop making the trip.
5. The Carpenter’s Shop
Once your town reaches Rank B, Dinda and Joko’s Carpenter shop sells hardwood for 150 coins each, per the community wiki. It is the fastest option when you have more money than time. Town rank climbs through museum donations, temple offerings and healing coral while diving, so the offerings that open the forests also push you toward Rank B.
6. The Exceptional Cutter Skill
The Foraging mastery has a skill called Exceptional Cutter. Per the community wiki, it gives fully grown regular trees a 2% chance to drop one hardwood on top of their normal wood. It is a small bonus, but it adds up if you clear a lot of trees.
7. Boxes in the Mines
Destructible boxes in the cavern occasionally drop hardwood. Nobody should mine for it on purpose, but it is a pleasant surprise.
Tips for a Steady Supply
- Plant your own trees. A handful of mahogany or poplar trees on the farm turns hardwood from a daily chore into a harvest.
- Clear the Mid Forest on your way somewhere else. The logs reset daily, so skipping a day just wastes a spawn rather than costing you anything.
- Buy the last few. If an upgrade is five short, 750 coins at the Carpenter beats another day of chopping.
