Coral Island: How to Make Wine

You make wine in Coral Island in two steps: first press fruit into fruit juice in a Keg, then put that juice into an Aging Barrel, which ferments it into wine. Per the community wiki, the juice takes about 12 in-game hours, while the aging takes several in-game days. Below we cover how to get both machines (including a free Aging Barrel that is easy to miss), which crops can become wine, how to speed the process up, and what wine is good for beyond selling.

This guide reflects version 1.3 of Coral Island on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The 1.3 patch notes added a hold-to-repeat input for feeding artisan machines, which makes loading a row of kegs far less tedious.

Step 1: Get a Keg

There are two ways, per the community wiki:

  • Craft it at Farming mastery level 6. The recipe costs 30 Wood, 2 Bronze Bars, 1 Silver Bar and 20 Scrap. Our guide to upgrading your tools explains where the bars come from.
  • Earn one from the Lake Temple. The Basic Artisan offering at the Advanced Altar rewards a Keg. It asks for a butter among other artisan goods, and our guide on making butter covers that part.

Step 2: Get an Aging Barrel

This is the harder machine, and there are four routes to one:

  • Reach Farming mastery level 8. Jeff Smith of the Farmers Guild runs an unlisted Farming Challenge, and its final step, per the community wiki, mails you an Aging Barrel when you reach level 8. Stairway’s hotfix notes confirm the barrel arrives in Jeff Smith’s letter as a claimable item, not a blueprint.
  • Craft it at Farming level 10. The recipe costs 25 Hardwood, 2 Osmium Bars and 1 Resin. Our hardwood guide lists every source.
  • Open the Cellar at town rank A. Per the community wiki, the Cellar beside your farmhouse comes with free Aging Barrels already inside. Our guide to raising your town rank covers the climb.
  • Complete the Rare Artisan offering. It rewards an Aging Barrel, but it also asks for a wine, so it is a bonus barrel rather than a first one.

Step 3: Make the Wine

  1. Load fruit into the Keg. Select the fruit in your toolbar, face the Keg and interact with it. On PC the community controls page lists the right mouse button as the default action key; on controller, use the interact prompt on screen.
  2. Collect the juice after about 12 in-game hours.
  3. Load the fruit juice into the Aging Barrel the same way.
  4. Collect the wine once the barrel finishes. The community wiki’s item pages list four days for most wines, while player reports for barrels left outdoors run closer to six.

Player guides report that the fruit’s star quality carries through to the juice and then the wine. Aging Barrels can also refine goods that are already aged: put a finished wine back in and it comes out one star higher, per the community wiki. Stairway’s own October 2025 hotfix notes listed a fix in progress for a bug that stopped players placing Grape Wine back in the barrel “to upgrade its quality”, which confirms the mechanic is intended.

Which Crops Can Become Wine

Any fruit juice can be aged. The community wiki lists 38 wines, from Apple and Grape to island specialties, and a few come from crops you might not think of as fruit: Pumpkin, Tomato, Sweet Potato and Taro Root all have wines.

Vegetable juices cannot be aged. Carrot, Okra, Eggplant, Bok Choy and the other vegetable juices are all rejected by the barrel, per the wiki, so check the item name says fruit juice before you queue a batch.

As for value, the wiki lists Grape Juice at 160 coins against 720 for Grape Wine, and Strawberry Wine at 1,015 before quality bonuses. That jump makes wine one of the best uses for surplus fruit.

How to Make Wine Faster

  • Age indoors. Stairway’s preview of the 1.1 update says Aging Barrels age faster inside the Cellar, and the community wiki says a shed gives the same boost. How much faster is disputed: the wiki measures it at twice as fast, while some players on the Steam forums report a much smaller gain.
  • Chain your machines. The Auto Chest moves items to and from the machines on either side of it, and Stairway’s own example shows finished fruit juice being deposited straight into an Aging Barrel. Per the community wiki, it is a Laboratory research item from town rank C.
  • Scale the barrels, not the kegs. A Keg finishes in half a day while a barrel takes days, so you need several barrels per Keg to keep both busy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t the Aging Barrel accept my juice? It is probably a vegetable juice. Only fruit juices age into wine, although Pumpkin, Tomato, Sweet Potato and Taro Root juices count.

How long does wine take in Coral Island? About 12 in-game hours in the Keg, then several days in the Aging Barrel: the community wiki lists four for most wines, and player reports for outdoor barrels run closer to six. Barrels in the Cellar or a shed work faster.

How do you get an Aging Barrel early? Reach Farming mastery level 8. Jeff Smith mails you one as the last reward of his Farming Challenge.

Can you put wine back in the Aging Barrel? Yes. Per the community wiki, re-aging a finished wine raises its quality by one star, and Stairway’s patch notes treat that as intended behavior.

What offering needs wine? The Rare Artisan offering at the Lake Temple’s Rare Altar asks for any wine, alongside any kimchi and a few other rare artisan goods.
