EA FC 27: How Chemistry Works (and What Changed for ICONs)

Players contesting a loose ball in EA Sports FC 27

Chemistry in EA FC 27 Ultimate Team works the same way it has since FIFA 23: each player in your starting XI earns 0 to 3 Chemistry points by sharing a club, league or nation with teammates, and only while playing in one of their listed positions. Higher Chemistry lets a player’s Chemistry Style boost their attributes more; there is no penalty for low Chemistry. What changed in FC 27 is how much ICONs, Heroes and the new Hall of FUT items contribute to everyone else.

Below we cover how players earn Chemistry, the thresholds, positions, Chemistry Styles, the new ICON and Hero values, and how to build around them. Sources are EA’s official Launch Update Pitch Notes for EA SPORTS FC 27 and the Chemistry notes EA published when it introduced the current system.

How Players Earn Chemistry

Chemistry is counted per player, not per link. For every player in your starting XI, the game counts how many players in the XI share their club, league and nation or region, including the player themselves. Hitting a threshold in any of the three earns a point, up to a maximum of 3 per player, so a full squad tops out at 33.

The thresholds EA set when it launched this system are:

Shared with the player 1 Chemistry 2 Chemistry 3 Chemistry
Club 2 players 4 players 7 players
Nation or region 2 players 5 players 8 players
League 3 players 5 players 8 players

The counts combine across categories. Two teammates from the same club and nation, for example, give each other 2 Chemistry (one from club, one from nation). EA’s FC 27 notes describe only “targeted changes” to Chemistry, all of them about ICONs, Heroes and boosted items, and do not restate the thresholds, so the table above is EA’s launch tuning from that system rather than a new FC 27 publication.

Only the starting XI counts. Substitutes play with no Chemistry boost, and once a match starts, changing formation, tactics or positions does not change your starters’ Chemistry.

Positions Matter

A player only earns Chemistry in a position listed on their card. Put a centre-back at striker and they earn nothing however many links they have. Positional adjacency no longer matters: players link regardless of where they stand on the pitch, which is why you can put two clubmates on opposite wings and still get the club bonus.

ICONs, Heroes and Hall of FUT in FC 27

This is where FC 27 changes things, per EA’s Launch Update:

  • ICONs still always receive full Chemistry when played in position, and still count as a +1 League link for every league. Their Nation contribution drops from +2 to +1.
  • Heroes still always receive full Chemistry in position. Their League contribution drops from +2 to +1, and their Nation contribution stays at +1.
  • Hall of FUT items, the new tier covered in our Hall of FUT guide, follow the same Chemistry rules as Heroes.

In practice, an ICON is still the easiest card in the game to fit into any squad, because it counts toward any league’s threshold. It just does less to switch on its countrymen than it did in FC 26. Heroes lose the most: their league value is halved, so they now count toward a league threshold like any other single player.

EA also says it will be “more selective” this year about giving Campaign and other special items boosted Chemistry, so expect fewer cards with double links than in past seasons. Base ICONs also now start at 88 OVR with refreshed attributes.

Chemistry Styles

Chemistry Styles (Hunter, Shadow, Engine and the rest) boost a set of attributes, and the boost scales with the player’s Chemistry: more at 3, less at 1, nothing at 0. In FC 26, EA rebalanced them onto a 3, 6 and 9 point boost model (down from 4, 8 and 12) and added trade-offs to pace-heavy styles. EA’s FC 27 notes do not announce further changes, so as of the current build that FC 26 model is the one EA last documented. Check the in-game preview before applying a style, since the exact attributes each style boosts are listed there.

Low Chemistry never makes a player worse than their card. Since FIFA 23 there are no negative attribute penalties, so a 0 Chemistry player plays at their base attributes.

How to Build Good Chemistry Quickly

  1. Pick a spine league. League thresholds (3, 5, 8) are the easiest to stack. A back line and midfield from one league gets most players to 2 quickly.
  2. Use ICONs as universal glue. Because they add a league link to every league, an ICON helps whichever league you build around, and they always have full Chemistry themselves in position.
  3. Layer a nation. Adding a second link type through nationality turns 2s into 3s without breaking the league.
  4. Check positions last. A player out of position earns 0, so confirm every card sits in a listed position before saving the squad.

Chemistry also still matters in puzzle SBCs, which can set Chemistry requirements, although most Player and Upgrade SBCs now use the new point system in our SBC guide, where Holographic cards score extra. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum team Chemistry in FC 27? 33: up to 3 Chemistry for each of the 11 starters.

Did ICON Chemistry change in FC 27? Yes. ICONs keep full Chemistry in position and a League link to every league, but their Nation contribution drops from +2 to +1.

Do Heroes still give double league links? No. Hero League contribution drops from +2 to +1 in FC 27, and Hall of FUT items follow the Hero rules.

Does low Chemistry lower a player’s stats? No. A player at 0 Chemistry plays at their base attributes; Chemistry only adds Chemistry Style boosts.

Do substitutes get Chemistry? No. Players who come on as substitutes play without any Chemistry boost.
