EA FC 27: How Evolutions Work (Pathways and Chain Preview)

EA Sports FC 27 official screenshot

Evolutions in EA FC 27 Ultimate Team let you submit a Player Item to an Evolution slot, complete its gameplay challenges, and earn permanent upgrades to that player, such as attribute boosts, new PlayStyles or Role familiarity. You start them from Ultimate Team > Club > Evolutions, and two things are new this year: branching Pathways that let you choose an upgrade route, and an Evolution Chain Preview that shows where a player can go next before you commit.

Below we walk through starting and progressing an Evolution, how Pathways and chain previewing work, Training Camp and Repeatable Evos, the time limits, how to remove an Evolution, and what EA changed about Evos for the season. Everything is verified against EA Help’s Evolutions article and the official FUT Deep Dive for EA SPORTS FC 27.

How to Start an Evolution

  1. Open Ultimate Team.
  2. Go to the Club tab, then select Evolutions.
  3. Select Available Evolutions and choose the one you want. Check its entry requirements and any unlock cost first; some slots are free, others cost Coins or FC Points.
  4. Submit an eligible Player Item.

If you earned an Evolution as a reward, for example from the Season Pass, it sits in the Rewards tab of the Evolutions screen instead. One important catch from EA Help: once a player goes into a standard Evolution slot, they become untradeable. Never evolve a card you might want to sell.

How to Progress and Claim Upgrades

  1. Go to Club > Evolutions > My Evolutions.
  2. Set the Evolution you want to work on to Active. Only the active Evolution makes progress toward its objectives.
  3. Play the required matches or complete the listed challenges.
  4. Claim each level’s upgrades as they unlock.

Squad Battles counts toward most general objectives, which makes it the steady PvE route for Evo grinding. EA’s beginner guide calls out the “Academy Grind” Evolution as one that is often completed there. You can also start and manage Evolutions from the FC 27 Web App and Companion App.

Pathways: Choosing How a Player Evolves

Pathways give some Evolutions branching upgrade choices instead of one fixed route. EA’s example: one option might improve dribbling and add the Technical PlayStyle, while another improves defensive awareness and adds Jockey. Not every Evolution uses Pathways; traditional linear Evos still exist.

When a level offers a choice, you can move between the options and preview each one. Per EA Help, your choice is only locked in when you complete that level and claim its reward, so you can change your mind right up until then.

Evolution Chain Preview: Planning Ahead

EA notes that many players like to plan their Evolution routes carefully, so FC 27 builds that planning into the game:

  1. Select the Evolution you want to preview.
  2. Select a player.
  3. Choose Preview Evolution.
  4. Select another Evolution to preview on top.
  5. Confirm to keep extending the preview path.

Each time you add an Evolution to the preview, the list of available Evolutions is filtered by the player’s resulting stats, so you can see which later Evos the player would still qualify for. That makes it much easier to avoid pushing a player past the entry limits of the Evolution you actually wanted next.

Training Camp and Repeatable Evolutions

Training Camp Evolutions upgrade players passively. You submit a player, they are unavailable for a set time (anywhere from a few hours to more than 30 days, per EA Help), and then you claim the upgrades and can use them in another Evolution. EA is expanding Training Camp Evos this year as entry points for boosting lower-rated players. You can cancel one, but you forfeit the unearned upgrades and any Coins or FC Points you paid.

Repeatable Evolutions can be completed more than once with the same player, provided they still meet the entry requirements. If the slot costs something, each repeat is a separate payment, and some repeatables have a cooldown before you can start again.

Time Limits and What Happens When They Expire

Evolutions can carry two timers, and a slot may have one, both or neither:

  • Get Within X Days: how long you have to activate the slot.
  • Expires In X Days: how long you have to finish it.

If “Expires In” runs out, you keep the upgrades from every completed level but lose any partially completed ones.

How to Remove an Evolution

FC 27 lets you undo Evolutions from the Player Item’s action menu. You can remove only the last Evolution applied or all of them, and you see a downgrade summary before confirming by holding the confirm control. Removal is final. The player returns to your Club (re-add them to your squad), and if they were tradeable before their first Evolution, removing all Evolutions makes them tradeable again.

What Else to Know This Season

  • SBCs: you cannot submit a player to an SBC while an Evolution is in progress, but fully evolved players can be used. Our SBC system guide explains the new point-based format.
  • Gallery: an evolved player counts in the FUT Gallery as its original base item; Evolution upgrades do not raise its Item Score, unlike a Holographic version of an item, which scores higher.
  • Hall of FUT: base Hall of FUT items can enter Evolutions when they meet the requirements, per EA’s Launch Pitch Notes. See our Hall of FUT guide.
  • Fewer, more targeted Evos: EA says impactful Evolutions will arrive “at a lower frequency” and at more intentional moments, with positional and attribute requirements designed to protect a player’s identity. Combined with the new three-PlayStyle+ cap per item, expect smaller jumps than in FC 26.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you sell a player after an Evolution? Not while the Evolution is applied: submitting a player makes them untradeable. If the player was tradeable before, removing all their Evolutions makes them tradeable again.

Can you withdraw a player from an Evolution in progress? You cannot swap the player out, but you can remove the Evolution from the Player Item’s action menu, which strips its upgrades.

How do Pathways work in FC 27 Evolutions? Some Evolution levels offer a choice of upgrades. You can switch between them until you complete the level and claim the reward.

Do Evolutions carry over from FC 26? No. Ultimate Team clubs, including evolved players, do not carry over to FC 27.

What is a Training Camp Evolution? A passive Evolution: the player is unavailable for a set time, then you claim the upgrades without playing matches for them.
