Philip and Andrew Oliver, the Oliver Twins who created Dizzy, revealed The Eggcellent Dizzy Collection on October 17 at Crash Live in Coventry: Dizzy the Adventurer, Go! Dizzy Go! and Panic! Dizzy together on one new SEGA Mega Drive cartridge. A Kickstarter preview page went live the same day, and the Twins’ teaser video says the collection is “to be released in 2027.”
The Details
The Twins’ announcement describes “three cracking games” on “one collectable SEGA Mega Drive compatible cartridge”:
- Dizzy the Adventurer: a fairy-tale adventure in which Dizzy sets out to rescue Daisy.
- Go! Dizzy Go!: colorful arcade maze action.
- Panic! Dizzy: three puzzle challenges that test thinking and reflexes.
The timing is an anniversary. Codemasters first published Dizzy in 1987, so he turns 40 in 2027, and the box art carries a 40th anniversary badge.
This line-up has a history. According to the Oliver Twins’ own site, the same three games made up The Excellent Dizzy Collection in 1993, when the Twins converted them to the Master System, Game Gear and Mega Drive. Codemasters made only 5,000 copies for Master System and Game Gear, and “the Megadrive version wasn’t released.” Dizzy the Adventurer began on the NES, packed in with Codemasters’ Aladdin Deck Enhancer, which failed in the US when distributor Camerica went bust.
What the Twins have not announced yet: a price, a funding goal, the Kickstarter’s launch date, or a release date beyond 2027.
What This Means for Players
For now there is nothing to buy. To hear when the campaign opens, click “Notify me on launch” on the Kickstarter preview page. This is a physical cartridge for Mega Drive hardware; the announcement does not mention a digital release, and it does not say whether the cartridge will run on North American Genesis consoles, so wait for the campaign page before assuming it will.
The Twins have crowdfunded a lost Dizzy game before: their site says the NES version of Panic! Dizzy went unreleased in the 1990s and came out 26 years later through a Kickstarter.
If you still play cartridges, Analogue’s Mega Sg+ is coming back as an FPGA console that runs original Genesis and Mega Drive carts from any region. For other classic games gathered into one package, see every game in the Toy Story Retro Roundup, and for another series turning 40, Konami gave the original Castlevania away free on phones.
When and Where
The Kickstarter preview page is live now. The campaign’s start date has not been announced, and the Twins’ teaser targets a 2027 release on a SEGA Mega Drive-compatible cartridge.
