Expedition 33: How to Heal Your Health

Expedition 33 official screenshot

To heal in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 you use a Healing Tint from the Items command in battle, cast a healing skill such as Lune’s Healing Light, or rest at an Expedition Flag or at camp to restore the whole party and refill your tints. Every one of those options can be made stronger, which is where most players leave healing on the table. This guide covers the tints and how to upgrade them, the skills and Pictos that heal, the rest points that top everything up, and what the patches since launch changed about healing.

Healing Tints: the quick fix in battle

Healing Tints are the consumable you will lean on most. In combat, pick Items on a character’s turn, choose Healing Tint, and pick the ally to heal. Using a tint takes that character’s turn, so the usual play is to heal with whoever has the least to contribute that round rather than with your damage dealer. The Expedition shares one stock of tints, not one per character, and the counter on the Items menu shows how many uses are left.

Tints do not regenerate over time. They refill when you rest at an Expedition Flag or sleep at camp, so a run through a level is a budget: the tints you spend on the way to a boss are tints you do not have during it. Energy Tints (AP) and Revive Tints sit in the same menu and follow the same rules.

Upgrading your tints

There are two separate kinds of tint upgrade, and the 2025 version of this guide only mentioned one of them.

  • Tint Shards add capacity. A Healing Tint Shard is a permanent +1 to how many Healing Tints you can carry, and Energy and Revive Tint Shards do the same for their tints. They are found as pickups in levels and sold by some Gestral merchants.
  • Shape of Health makes each Healing Tint heal more. It is applied at camp through the Curator, the Gestral who also handles weapon upgrades, and Shape of Energy and Shape of Life do the same job for the other two tints. Player-made item lists count only two Shape of Health items in the whole game, one from the Goblu fight in Flying Waters and one hidden behind a mirror in the Manor, so each one you find matters.

Community guides put the Healing Tint at roughly a third of a character’s health at base and near a full heal at its final tier, but no official source states those figures, so treat them as a rough shape. Hotfix 1.2.2 fixed a launch bug where upgraded tints that were not fully restocked could be lost after returning to the menu.

Healing skills and who has them

Lune is the party’s dedicated healer. Healing Light is her early single-target heal that also clears status effects, Revitalization heals the whole party, Tree of Life is a group heal that also cleanses, and Rebirth revives a downed ally with a little AP. Her healing skills interact with her Stains: with the right Stains banked, some of them cost less or apply a bonus such as Regen, so a Lune build that generates Stains reliably heals almost for free. Other characters have self-sustain rather than party healing, such as Sciel’s Harvest, which heals her based on her Foretell stacks, so if you drop Lune from the active party you are relying on tints.

Skills cost AP, which comes from basic attacks and successful defence. A party that lands its parries and dodges rarely needs to heal at all: the best heal is not being hit.

Pictos and Luminas that boost healing

Pictos are the equipment that carries passive effects, and after four battles their effect becomes a Lumina any party member can slot. Several of them are built around healing:

  • Effective Heal doubles all heals the wearer receives.
  • Healing Share gives the wearer 15 percent of any healing applied to other characters, which turns Lune’s single-target heals into small party heals.
  • Energetic Healer grants AP when the wearer heals an ally, once per turn.
  • Accelerating Heal and Protecting Heal add Rush or Shell to an ally Lune heals.

Give Effective Heal to whoever takes the most hits and Healing Share to the rest, then use the Lumina Sets feature added in patch 1.5.0 to save that loadout so you can swap to it before a hard boss without rebuilding it by hand. See our Colour of Lumina guide for how to widen your Lumina budget.

Rest points, camp, and the free full heal

Expedition Flags are the checkpoints in every level, and interacting with one restores the whole party to full health and refills every tint. They are also where you spend attribute and skill points and change difficulty. Camp does the same on the world map: press the camp button (G on keyboard, down on the D-pad on a controller by default) and sleep at the campfire. Our camp guide covers everything else you can do there.

Two quality-of-life changes make healing mistakes cheaper than they were at launch. Patch 1.4.0 added a Battle Retry prompt after a defeat, and patch 1.5.0 added an Abandon Battle option in the pause menu, both listed in the official patch notes. Retrying with full tints is often faster than healing through a fight that has gone wrong. Patch 1.4.0 also closed a loop where Second Chance, Healing Boon and Protecting Death together made a character immortal, so that combination no longer works. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use a Healing Tint in Expedition 33? On a character’s turn in battle, choose Items, pick Healing Tint, then pick the ally to heal. It uses that character’s turn.

Do Healing Tints refill? Yes, every time you rest at an Expedition Flag or sleep at camp. They never refill on their own during a level.

How do I upgrade Healing Tints? Tint Shards add an extra use each, and Shape of Health, applied through the Curator at camp, makes each use heal more. Both are permanent for that playthrough.

Does the party heal after every battle? No. Health carries over between fights until you rest at a flag or at camp, which is why the tint budget matters.

Which character is the healer? Lune. Healing Light, Revitalization, Tree of Life and Rebirth cover single-target healing, party healing, cleansing and reviving.
