To camp in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 you stand on the world map, the open Continent between levels, and press the camp button, which is G on keyboard and down on the D-pad on a controller by default; the option unlocks in Act I after the Eveque fight at the end of Spring Meadows. Camp is where you sleep, upgrade weapons and tints through the Curator, and build the relationships that unlock new skills and cosmetics. This guide covers when and where camp works, every option at the campfire, the Curator, the relationship scenes, and what has changed since launch.
When camp unlocks and where it works
Camp is not available in the opening hours. You unlock it in Act I: Gustave, after beating Eveque, the boss at the end of Spring Meadows, and stepping out onto the Continent for the first time. From then on, a Go to Camp prompt sits in the bottom-left corner of the screen whenever you are on the world map. If the prompt is missing when you first arrive, walk toward Flying Waters; early player reports say the unlock message fires partway there.
The prompt only shows on the world map. Inside a level, a town or a ruin it is gone, and the nearest Expedition Flag does the resting job instead. Both defaults can be changed: keyboard binds were always editable, and patch 1.5.0 added full controller remapping, so if down on the D-pad does nothing, check your layout.
What the campfire menu does
Interact with the fire in the middle of camp and you get three choices:
- Sleep ends the visit, restores the whole party to full health, refills every Healing, Energy and Revive Tint, and returns you to the world map. It is the same full reset an Expedition Flag gives, which is why camp is the cheapest way to heal between levels.
- Recall Objective reminds you where the story wants you next, useful after a detour.
- Journal lets Gustave write up the expedition so far. Keep doing this; the entries feed a skill unlock later in his story.
Patch 1.2.3 fixed a black screen that could hit players who picked Recall Objective, then Sleep, then Leave in quick succession, so the sequence is safe now.
The Curator, weapons and tints
The Curator is the Gestral who joins camp after the Flying Waters chapter, and he is the only reason many players camp at all. Talk to him to upgrade weapons with Chroma and Chroma Catalysts, to spend Colour of Lumina on each character’s Lumina point cap, and to apply Shape of Health, Shape of Energy and Shape of Life to make each tint stronger. Two other Gestrals share the camp: Noco, who is tied to Monoco’s story, and Sastro, who hands out rewards for collectibles you have found.
Since patch 1.5.0 you can also save up to 50 Lumina Sets, which makes camp the natural place to build a boss loadout and a general one and swap between them. Hotfix 1.5.1 closed an exploit where spamming the upgrade and change-character buttons at the Curator pushed a weapon to level 34; the cap is 33 again.
Relationship scenes and the party
Your companions stand around the camp, and each one has something to say every time you visit. Talking to them raises their relationship level, and from Act II onward a Spend Time option opens longer scenes. Those levels are not flavour: the top tiers unlock skills, in some cases a character’s strongest, plus outfits and haircuts, and they gate some of the game’s best-written moments. Our rule is to camp after every level and talk to everyone, because relationship conversations that go unseen do not queue up forever.
Esquie is in camp too once he joins, and the gramophone near the fire plays any Music Record you have collected. Records are pickups in the levels, so the playlist grows as you explore.
What changed since launch
The camp itself is the same place it was in April 2025, but the systems around it grew. Patch 1.3.0 added Challenge Modifiers at Expedition Flags from Act III onward, including enemy HP multipliers up to x100, and fixed a bug where loading a save after resting elsewhere put the player at coordinate zero. Patch 1.5.0 added Verso’s Drafts, a new area next to Lumière that needs Esquie’s dive, new Endless Tower bosses, and Photo Mode, all detailed in the official patch notes. Patch 1.5.5 fixed rest points that would not open while an in-world dialogue was playing. None of them moved the camp button or the campfire menu, so the steps above hold as of the current build. For every other guide to the game, see the Expedition 33 hub.
