Fantasy Life i: How to Fish

Fantasy Life i official screenshot

To fish in Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, take the Angler Life from Auntie Anne at the Guild; Angler is one of the starting Lives, so nothing needs unlocking. Then approach water with a visible fish shadow, press the cast prompt, wait for the lure to go under, and reel the fish in before your line gauge runs out.

Below we cover taking the Life and its first quest, casting, the reeling fight and Sweet Spots, the controls on each platform, and the fishing changes Level-5 has made since launch, verified against official patch notes.

Taking the Angler Life

Unlike Farmer, which waits until Chapter 4 (see our farming guide), Angler is available from the beginning. Speak to Auntie Anne at the Guild Hall and select it. Player guides say you are handed a rented fishing rod on the spot, so you can start straight away.

You need the Angler Life active to fish. Walking up to water as another Life does nothing, which is the usual reason players think fishing is locked.

Taking the Life starts its tutorial quest, The Fish, Cat, and Angler. Per player guides, it sends you to Gramps, the Angler Life Master, at the fishing shack southeast of the Guild Hall, and asks you to catch three Sardines, which are common near the docks. Level-5’s Version 2.2.0 notes (August 2026) fixed a bug where viewing the “Trip Controls: Fishing” guide could stop the Novice Angler Challenge from progressing, so if an early Angler challenge stalled for you, update and try again.

Casting a Line

  1. Find water with fish shadows in it. No shadow means nothing to catch.
  2. Walk up to the shadow until the cast prompt appears, then press it. On PC keyboard, player guides put the cast on F.
  3. Wait. Early player reports say the best tell is the fish turning to face your bait.
  4. When the lure goes under the surface, press the prompted button to start reeling.

Casting into empty water is the most common beginner mistake: the shadows are the whole targeting system.

Reeling, the Line Gauge and Sweet Spots

Once a fish is hooked, the fight is a race between two bars. The fish has a health bar you wear down by reeling, and your line has a line gauge that drains as you fight. Empty the fish’s health before the gauge hits zero and it is yours. Player guides add that fishing uses SP, so keep an eye on it during long sessions.

Watch for damage numbers marked “Sweet”. Those are Sweet Spots, and per player guides they do two things:

  • More damage to the fish’s health bar
  • No drain on your line gauge

That second effect is what lands big fish. Raw reeling works on Sardines and fails on anything substantial. Player guides say the Sweet Spot Search skill reveals where the Sweet Spot is, mapped to Square on PlayStation, X on Xbox and Y on Switch, and that a charged pull deals heavy damage for the Excellent catches that give bonus rewards. Level-5 made Sweet Spot hits easier to read in Version 2.1 (February 2026), adjusting damage popups so your Sweet Spot damage stands apart from other players’ in multiplayer.

On PC, press F10 for the full keyboard and mouse control list, added in Version 1.4.0. Gamepad key configuration in Options was expanded in Version 1.3.1.

Fishing Changes Since Launch

  • New rods. Version 2.1 added the Dark Dragon Fishing Rod among its Dark Dragon Life tools. At first it had a serious bug: the line gauge dropped to zero the moment you started fishing with it or the True Dark Dragon Fishing Rod, failing every attempt. Version 2.1.2 fixed it in February 2026.
  • Polishing. Since the free Version 2.0 update, the Blacksmith, Carpenter and Alchemist Lives can Polish Life tools, including rods, for stat boosts and a chance to fill your special skill gauge instantly during gathering.
  • Encyclopedia. Version 1.5.0 expanded the Encyclopedia’s fish list so fish without gold crowns also appear on it once caught.

Tips Most Players Miss

  • Do not mash. Sweet Spots reward reading the fight, not spamming the reel.
  • Scout for shadows first. Water without shadows holds nothing, so check before settling in.
  • The rented rod is a starter. Better rods come from the Blacksmith Life, which crafts Life tools.
  • Ride to far fishing spots. Distant waters in Ginormosia get much quicker to reach once mounts unlock.
