Gears of War E-Day: Best Controller Settings

A bald COG soldier in heavy armor stands in a ruined shopping arcade lit by neon signs in Gears of War E-Day

The best controller settings in Gears of War: E-Day start with four changes: pick the Modern or Legacy control scheme to match how you like to move, lower the Right Stick Inner Dead Zone until the camera stops drifting, set Auto Reload Mode to Manual so you can chase active reloads, and switch each mode’s Graphics Mode to the higher frame rate. Everything else is personal taste, and we explain which way to lean on each option below.

Every option name here comes from The Coalition’s official accessibility and settings guide for Gears of War: E-Day, verified as of September 30, 2026, the day before early access opens. The Coalition does not publish recommended values, so we do not give you exact slider numbers: treat our suggestions as a starting direction and adjust in Combat Training.

Control Scheme: Pick This First

Under Settings > Controls, the Control Scheme option offers five presets:

Scheme What it does
Default The standard E-Day layout
Modern Closer to other modern shooters
Modern Alt Modern, with Slide moved to the B button
Legacy Closest to classic Gears controls
Legacy Alt Legacy, with some A button actions moved to other buttons

If you played Gears 3 or Gears 5 for years, Legacy keeps your muscle memory. If you mostly play other shooters, Modern will feel natural sooner. One catch: Toggle Sprint does not work on Legacy or Legacy Alt, so if you want a toggle, choose a Modern layout. Our wall bounce guide explains how each scheme handles cover cancels, which is the other big reason to choose carefully.

Controller Remap (in the Controller sub menu) lets you swap any two gameplay buttons afterwards, so you are never stuck with a preset.

Aim Assist: Know What Each Setting Does

Aim Assist has four levels:

  • Off: no assistance.
  • Default: per-weapon aim assist.
  • Snap Aim: when you aim, the reticle briefly snaps to the nearest valid spot on a nearby enemy.
  • Lock-on Aiming: the reticle stays locked on the enemy closest to it while you aim. Flick the stick left or right to jump to the next target.

The Coalition clarified on its official X account that Default gives a standard level of controller assist in every mode, Versus included. Its open beta notes also said aim assist “only affects Campaign and Horde Siege,” so our reading is that the stronger Snap Aim and Lock-on options are the ones limited to PvE. Check the in-game description on launch day. For Versus, keep Default. For solo Campaign or casual Horde Siege, Snap Aim is a legitimate accessibility option, and Target Lock Audio Cue adds a sound when Lock-on grabs a target.

Sensitivity and Dead Zones

E-Day splits sensitivity three ways, each with separate horizontal and vertical sliders: Look (hip), Target (aiming down sights) and Scope. That split is the most useful thing in the menu:

  1. Set Look sensitivity first so you can turn quickly toward flanks.
  2. Set Target sensitivity lower than Look. You spend Gnasher and Lancer fights aimed in, and a slower aim makes small corrections easier.
  3. Set Scope sensitivity lowest. The Coalition says scopes now have sway, so a fast scope sensitivity makes that sway worse.

Then open the dead zones. A larger inner dead zone means you have to push the stick further before anything moves. If your camera creeps on its own, raise it slightly. If aiming feels sluggish on small movements, lower it. The outer dead zone works the other way: a larger one means you reach full turning speed with less stick travel. Aim Acceleration controls how strongly the stick speeds up as you hold it; lower acceleration makes your aim more predictable. Beta players on social media commonly recommended modest sensitivity and careful dead zone tuning over high speed, but no values are official.

Controls Most Players Should Change

  • Auto Reload Mode. Automatic starts reloading the moment you empty a weapon. Set Manual (Reload Button) so you control the timing, which matters because E-Day’s Gnasher and Breechshot now reload round by round.
  • Slide to Cover. When on, it drops you into cover automatically when you slide toward it. Turn it off if you want to slide past cover without sticking.
  • Allow Automatic Lean Out Transition. Moves you into lean-out positions without extra input. Helpful in Campaign; we would try it off in Versus if you want full control over when you peek.
  • Remember Last Aim State. Keeps you zoomed the next time you aim, which is handy with snipers.
  • Toggle Primary Weapon. Press the same D-pad direction twice to switch and switch back.
  • Adaptive Triggers. Works on supported controllers such as the DualSense on PC. Turn it off if the resistance slows your trigger pulls.

Graphics, HUD and Audio Settings Worth Changing

On Xbox Series X|S, E-Day gives each mode its own setting: Campaign Graphics Mode, Horde Siege Graphics Mode and Versus Graphics Mode each choose between a higher frame rate and higher quality. Use quality for Campaign if you like, but pick the frame rate option for Versus. The menu also shows whether 120Hz output is detected. The beta notes warned that Series S could hitch in long Horde Siege sessions on Quality Mode, another reason to favor frame rate there.

A few more worth a look:

  • Active Reload Position (Interface tab): centered under the reticle by default, or Top Right like older Gears games.
  • Campaign and Horde Siege Enemy Health Bars: On, Large enemies only, or Bosses only.
  • Audio Configuration: the Competitive preset highlights footsteps and weapon sounds, and Enemy Footstep Volume has its own slider. Both help in Versus.
  • Horde Siege Camera Shake: lower it if big Invasion Events make aiming messy.
  • Proximity Chat: Horde Siege only; lets you hear nearby players from other squads.

PC players get the same menus plus keyboard binds and a Sprint Style choice. Our Steam and PC guide covers hardware, and our multiplayer and Horde guide explains the modes you are tuning for. Every other guide is on our Gears of War: E-Day hub.
