DMZ, the extraction mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, is free to play until Wednesday, November 11, at 10:00 AM PT (1:00 PM EST), Activision announced in a DMZ Free Trial post on Steam on November 6. The trial started that day at 12:00 PM PT (3:00 PM EST) and gives “full access to DMZ” without buying the game.
The Details
Until now, DMZ has only been playable by owning Modern Warfare 4, which starts at $69.99 for the Standard Edition. The trial opens the whole mode, which Activision describes as “a living combat sandbox where every deployment is a new story”: go solo or squad up to “loot, fight, negotiate, betray, and extract with whatever you can carry across Hajin.”
On Steam, the trial is a separate free download. Modern Warfare 4’s Steam store page lists “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 – DMZ Free Trial” with a Play Game button and a note to play for free until November 11 at 10:00 AM.
Activision’s post does not mention consoles, Battle.net or the Xbox app, and it does not say whether trial progress carries over if you buy the game.
What This Means for Players
A free look before you buy. Unlike the original DMZ, which was free inside Warzone 2.0, Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ ships inside the paid game, as our guide to whether DMZ is free explains. The trial is a chance to try Hajin before spending anything.
Make the most of the window. Our DMZ beginner guide covers the first deployments, and if your friends are not joining, our guide to playing DMZ solo covers going in alone. The DMZ map guide explains how Hajin is laid out.
Buyers have DMZ extras to weigh. If the trial sells you on the mode, several Season 1 store bundles come with DMZ perks, as our report on how Modern Warfare 4’s paid bundles add DMZ perks details. Every guide is on our Call of Duty hub.
