No, the Ocarina of Time remake has no new fast travel system. Nintendo added Breath of the Wild-style warp points during development and then took every one of them out again, so getting around works the way it did in 1998: on foot or on Epona, with six warp songs for adult Link to jump between key places once he learns them.
What the remake does add is speed on the ground. Holding the roll button now turns into a dash, which takes most of the sting out of crossing Hyrule Field. Below is why the warp points went, and every quick way to get around.
Why Nintendo Took the Warp Points Out
Producer Eiji Aonuma explained it in Part 1 of Nintendo’s Ask the Developer interview. Looking at Breath of the Wild, where “there are many warp points that enable players to move quickly around the game’s vast world,” he asked the team to add warp points the original never had.
In testing, the shortcuts took away the moments of discovery that come from stopping along the way to wonder what something is. “So even though I was the one who proposed adding warp points, they just weren’t working for me in the end,” Aonuma said, and he had the team “take them all back out again.”
The Six Warp Songs
Sheik teaches adult Link six warp songs, most of them at the doorstep of a temple. Play one anywhere outdoors and Link is carried to that spot. These are the original melodies on the remake’s ocarina buttons (the five notes are L, R, Y, X and A):
| Song | Takes you to | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Minuet of Forest | Sacred Forest Meadow, by the Forest Temple | L, X, Y, A, Y, A |
| Bolero of Fire | Death Mountain Crater, by the Fire Temple | R, L, R, L, A, R, A, R |
| Serenade of Water | Lake Hylia, by the Water Temple | L, R, A, A, Y |
| Nocturne of Shadow | Kakariko Graveyard, by the Shadow Temple | Y, A, A, L, Y, A, R |
| Requiem of Spirit | Desert Colossus, by the Spirit Temple | L, R, L, A, R, L |
| Prelude of Light | Temple of Time | X, A, X, A, Y, X |
Once learned, the songs work for young Link too, which is the only quick way for him to reach some places (Requiem of Spirit is how young Link gets to the Desert Colossus). Our guide to every ocarina song covers where Sheik teaches each one.
Other Ways to Get Around Faster
- The dash. Hold the roll button and Link keeps running, with no stamina meter. Our sprint guide covers it.
- Epona. Adult Link’s horse is the fastest way across Hyrule Field; our Epona guide covers getting her.
- Farore’s Wind. The Great Fairy at Zora’s Fountain gives you this spell. Cast it inside a dungeon to set a warp point, leave, and cast it again to return to that exact spot. It only works in dungeons. Our Great Fairy guide has the fountain.
- Kaepora Gaebora. At the top of Death Mountain the owl offers young Link a ride down to Kakariko Village, which is faster than the trail.
- The Sun’s Song. Not travel, but it skips the wait when somewhere only opens at night or by day. Our time change guide has the notes.
How Much Walking Is Left
Less than you remember. Some shop and building entrances in the remake now load seamlessly, swimming is quicker, and the dash covers ground a roll never did. Nintendo kept the loading between major areas on purpose, though, and Hyrule Field is still the hub between almost everything. Our guide to whether the remake is open world covers how the map is built, and how long the remake takes shows what that means for a full run. Every remake guide is on our Zelda hub.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Ocarina of Time remake have fast travel? Not as a new system. Nintendo added warp points during development and removed them. The original’s warp songs are still there.
How do you fast travel in the Ocarina of Time remake? Play a warp song on the ocarina. Sheik teaches adult Link six of them over the course of the adult adventure.
Can young Link use the warp songs? Yes. Once adult Link has learned a song, young Link can play it too.
What is the fastest way across Hyrule Field? Epona as adult Link. Without her, hold the roll button to dash.
Does Farore’s Wind work outside dungeons? No. It sets and returns you to a warp point inside a dungeon only.
