To use a Wormhole Potion in Terraria, join the same colored team as a friend in a multiplayer world, keep the potion anywhere in your inventory, open the full-screen map and select your teammate’s head icon. You teleport straight to them and one potion is used up, because unlike other potions you never drink it.
Below we cover team selection and the map button on every platform, the reasons it sometimes refuses to work, the full recipe, and the best moments to use one. Everything is checked against the current 1.4.5.8 build of Terraria and Re-Logic’s changelogs.
Step by Step: Teleporting to a Teammate
- Play in multiplayer. Wormhole Potions only teleport you to other players, so they do nothing in single player.
- Join the same team. Pick a colored team: red, green, blue, yellow or pink. The white shield means no team, and you can only teleport to players on your own team.
- Carry a Wormhole Potion. It works from anywhere in your inventory, including a Void Bag.
- Open the full-screen map with the button below.
- Select your teammate’s head icon. You appear at their position, a status message announces the teleport, and one potion is consumed.
| Action | PC | PlayStation | Xbox | Switch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open the full-screen map | M | Touchpad | View | Minus |
| Select a teammate | Left-click their head | Move the cursor to their head and select it | Same as PlayStation | Same as PlayStation |
The map buttons are the defaults from the official Terraria wiki’s controls table. On mobile, use the map button to open the full map.
Where to pick a team: on PC, click one of the colored shields next to your armor and accessory slots while the inventory is open. On mobile, the team shields sit in the PvP menu inside the inventory. On console, the official wiki notes you choose your team from the full-screen map itself. Joining a team is separate from the PvP toggle. Since the 1.4.5 update you also rejoin your last team automatically when you come back to a world.
Why Your Wormhole Potion Is Not Working
- You are on different teams, or no team. Both players need the same color.
- Your minimap is turned off. The official wiki notes Wormhole Potions and Pylons both stop working when the Map option in the settings is disabled, and it can only be changed from the title screen.
- Your teammate is dead. Since 1.4.5, slain players are hidden from the world map until they respawn.
- You clicked a Pylon. If a teammate’s head overlaps a Pylon icon on the map, 1.4.5 gives the Pylon priority, so you travel through the pylon network instead.
- You are playing alone. There is nobody to teleport to, although the potions can still be crafted.
How to Craft Wormhole Potions
The recipe makes three at a time: 3 Bottled Water, 1 Specular Fish and 1 Blinkroot, crafted at a Placed Bottle (a Bottle set on a table or platform), an Alchemy Table or an Alchemy Flask.
- Bottled Water: craft an empty Bottle while standing next to water, a Sink or a water fountain.
- Specular Fish: per the official wiki, a common catch in Forest or Snow biome water in the Underground and Cavern layers. The same pond-size rules from our guide on how to fish in lava apply: at least 75 tiles of liquid, ideally 300.
- Blinkroot: an herb with glowing dots that grows on bare Dirt or Mud, usually underground. Harvest it while it blooms to get seeds for a planter.
The Alchemy Table is worth the upgrade, since the official wiki gives it a one-in-three chance of saving each ingredient. In multiplayer, Wormhole Potions also turn up in pots and as rare bonus drops from slimes. And if you have spare Recall Potions, the wiki suggests decrafting them in the Shimmer for a chance at Specular Fish: our guide on how to find the Shimmer shows where it hides.
When a Wormhole Potion Is Worth It
- Rejoining boss fights. The official wiki’s top tip: after you respawn, teleport straight back to a teammate who is still fighting. It is especially useful for fights tied to one place, such as the Wall of Flesh in the Underworld.
- Regrouping after exploring. One potion replaces a long walk to wherever your friends ended up.
- Pairing it with your bed. Set your bed spawn at the shared base using our guide on how to set a spawn point, then wormhole out to whoever is on an expedition.
The 1.4.5 update added one more use. The new Scrying Orb, crafted at a Work Bench from any Magic Mirror, 2 Lenses and 4 Wormhole Potions, lets you spectate other players through their eyes. Frequently Asked Questions
Can you use a Wormhole Potion in single player? No. It only teleports you to teammates in multiplayer, although you can still craft it in a single-player world.
Do you have to drink a Wormhole Potion? No. Keep it in your inventory, open the full-screen map and select a teammate’s head. One potion is consumed when you teleport.
Do Wormhole Potions work if you are not on a team? No. Both players must be on the same colored team. The white shield means no team.
How many Wormhole Potions does one craft make? Three, from 3 Bottled Water, 1 Specular Fish and 1 Blinkroot.
Why can’t I select my friend on the map? Check that you share a team, that your minimap is enabled, and that your friend is alive. Since 1.4.5, a Pylon icon under their head also takes priority.
