The fastest money in Transport Fever 3 comes from lines that run full in both directions: busy cargo chains matched to real demand, and long, fast passenger routes. Unlike Transport Fever 2, cargo no longer pays more for distance. Urban Games says each cargo type pays the same wherever it goes, as long as it arrives within its time limit, so short, busy cargo lines are the quickest early profit.
Here is how income works now, based on Urban Games’ developer posts and official game manual.
How Cargo Pays Now
This is the biggest change for Transport Fever 2 veterans. An Urban Games developer explained it on the official tycoon overview: “Cargo deliveries are priced based on the type of cargo being delivered. Providing you are within the time limit for that cargo type you’ll earn the same amount regardless of how far that cargo has needed to travel.”
Earlier in development, the same developer said the payment changes were meant “to make the distant cargo route method a thing of the past”. For goods, the complexity of the cargo is what drives pay. So:
- Don’t stretch cargo routes for more money; it no longer works.
- Deliver on time. Each cargo type has a time limit.
- Move more complex cargo once you can, since it pays more than raw materials.
Urban Games’ materials say late deliveries still earn money but hurt the town’s Delivery rating, while the developer’s “within the time limit” wording suggests timing matters for pay. Treat on-time delivery as the safe target.
How Passengers Pay
Passengers still reward distance and speed. The developer put it plainly: “Long distance passenger travel at speed will continue to pay well.” Fast intercity lines between large towns are your long-term earners.
Use Loans Wisely
- You start with nothing, so a loan is how every company begins.
- Each loan card shows the amount, term, interest rate and repayments, which come out in 15-day intervals.
- Interest is monthly, so the manual advises paying loans back as soon as you can. The Repay button clears a loan early.
Take the Right Subsidies
Subsidies pay money up front when you accept them. Completing one can earn town XP, a bonus payment or “a limited-time 2x income effect”. Failing reverses the upfront payment and may add a fine, and declining one costs nothing. The types are:
- Supply Industry
- Supply Town
- Connect Towns
- Transport Workers
Take the ones that fit lines you were going to build anyway.
Why Your Lines Lose Money
From the manual’s tips and line pages:
- Empty return trips. Look for cargo going the other way; freight vehicles refit automatically.
- Too few wagons for the cargo waiting.
- Winding track. Maintenance is paid on the real track length, so S-bends and U-shaped detours cost money every month.
- Short platforms that slow loading.
- Old vehicles. Poorly maintained vehicles cost more to run and go slower. Replace them.
How to Check What Is Profitable
- Line and vehicle charts: in the Balance chart, blue (income) should sit above red (costs).
- Line Statistics (F2): the Balance column ranks your lines.
- Vehicle Statistics (F3): find the individual vehicles losing money.
Settings That Change Your Income
When creating a Free Game, several settings affect money:
- Inflation reduces income as your company rank rises.
- Passenger Income and Cargo Income multipliers sit under Advanced.
- Cost and upkeep sliders for vehicles and infrastructure sit under Finances.
Changing gameplay settings away from standard values can switch off achievements, as our mods guide explains.
A Simple Early-Game Plan
- Take one loan and open a bus line between two neighbouring towns.
- Add a short cargo chain to a town that demands the goods, with a warehouse at the drop-off.
- Accept subsidies that match what you’re building.
- Repay loans as profit comes in.
- Graduate to fast passenger trains between big towns.
