Transport Fever 3: Every Map Size and How to Unlock the Hidden Ones

Transport Fever 3 offers four map sizes on PC, Small, Medium, Large and Very Large, while console players get Small, Medium and Large because of memory limits. A Small square map is 8.192 km across and a Very Large one 16.384 km. PC players can unlock four more experimental sizes, up to Gigantomaniac at 28.672 km, with one setting.

All figures are from Urban Games’ official manual page on map sizes.

The Standard Map Sizes

You pick a size and an aspect ratio when you create a new game:

  • Small: 8.192 km across on a square (1:1) map.
  • Medium and Large: in between.
  • Very Large: 16.384 km across on a square map. PC only.

Aspect ratios run from 1:1 (square) to 1:5 (long and narrow). A long map suits a single trunk line between distant towns, while a square map gives you more room for a web of routes. The manual’s table lists every size at every ratio.

Why Consoles Top Out at Large

The manual says the Console Edition offers Small, Medium and Large only, because of “memory limitations”. If you want Very Large or bigger maps, you need the PC version. Our PS5, Xbox and Mac guide covers the other platform differences.

The Hidden Experimental Sizes (PC Only)

Four more sizes are in the game but switched off by default:

  • Tiny
  • Huge
  • Megalomaniac
  • Gigantomaniac, up to 28.672 km across on a square map.

To unlock them:

  1. Close the game.
  2. Open settings.lua in your Transport Fever 3 userdata folder. The manual’s Game File Locations page lists the folder for Steam, GOG and Epic.
  3. Set experimentalMapFeatures = true and save the file.
  4. Start the game; the extra sizes appear when you create a new map.

Be careful:

  • The manual recommends at least 16 GB of RAM for these sizes.
  • The same setting also lets you change economy settings in existing saves, which the manual warns “might lead to unstable situations”.
  • The experimental features aren’t available on consoles.
  • If the game misbehaves, deleting settings.lua resets your settings, as our crash fixes guide explains.

Custom Maps and Heightmaps

The map editor can import heightmaps. Each heightmap pixel is 4 by 4 metres of terrain, and the manual lists the exact resolution to use for each size and ratio.

Which Size Should You Pick

  • Your first game: Small or Medium. Towns sit closer together, so early bus and cargo lines are short and cheap; our beginner tips walk through that opening.
  • Long campaigns with high-speed rail: Large or Very Large, where fast passenger routes have room to earn; our money guide explains why distance still pays for passengers.
  • Performance: bigger maps mean more towns, vehicles and simulation, so a slower PC may struggle late in the game.

You’ll see some players argue about how Transport Fever 3’s maps compare with Transport Fever 2’s. The official figures above are for Transport Fever 3 only. Every guide is on our Transport Fever 3 hub.
