WoW Forever: How to Learn New Abilities

A Dwarf Shaman in blue and gold armor calls down crackling lightning between two totems on a grassy hill in World of Warcraft: Forever

In World of Warcraft: Forever you learn new abilities from your class trainer: talk to the trainer for your class, choose “I’d like to train,” pick a spell from the list and click Train. New spells do not show up on their own when you level, so a trip to the trainer belongs on your list every couple of levels.

We trained our Night Elf Hunter with Ayanna Everstride, the Hunter Trainer at the top of Aldrassil in Shadowglen, once at level 3 and again at level 6. Below is where to find your trainer, how the training window works, what it cost us, and where the new spells end up.

We recorded ourselves training new abilities on PC for the video at the end of this guide. The screenshots in this guide come from the same recording.

Where to Find Your Class Trainer

Every class has its own trainer, and the title under the name tells you which: Ayanna Everstride carries Hunter Trainer, and Mardant Strongoak, the Druid Trainer, stands in the same room. Your starting area has trainers for the classes that start there, and the cities have them too.

  • In the starting area: look in the main building. For Night Elves that is the top of Aldrassil, the great tree in Shadowglen; Ayanna stood at about 58.6, 40.5 on the map. Our Hunter was even pointed there by a quest: at level 3 the Etched Sigil landed in our bags along with a quest whose objective reads “Read the Etched Sigil and speak to Ayanna Everstride at the top of Aldrassil in Shadowglen.”
  • In a city: ask a guard. The Darnassus Sentinels’ list of directions includes Class Trainer, and Blizzard’s new player’s starter guide gives the same advice for finding trainers.

How to Train New Abilities

  1. Talk to your trainer. Ayanna greeted us with “Welcome to the Cenarion Circle, hunter.” and an option reading “I’d like to train.”
  2. Read the list. Each spell shows its rank, the level it needs and its price.

  3. Select a spell and click Train at the bottom right of the window. Your character flashes with light and the chat says “You have learned a new spell” with the spell’s name.

  4. Repeat for the rest. You train one spell at a time, and each one drops off the list once learned.

What Training Costs

Early training is cheap, but it is not free, so keep a little money aside.

  • Level 3: Track Beasts was the only spell we could train, for 10 copper. Our purse held 1 silver and 21 copper at the time.
  • Level 6: Aspect of the Monkey, Serpent Sting, Arcane Shot and Hunter’s Mark cost 1 silver each. Our money went from 7 silver 44 copper to 5 silver 44 copper after the first two, and all four came to 4 silver.

If money gets tight, our gold guide has better ways to earn it.

How to See What Unlocks Next

The trainer’s list shows upcoming spells before you can learn them. At level 3, Ayanna’s window already listed Aspect of the Monkey and Serpent Sting with “Requires: Level 4” and Arcane Shot and Hunter’s Mark with “Requires: Level 6,” each requirement in red until we reached that level. Glance at the list on every visit and you know when the next trip is worth it.

You can also catch up later. We skipped the trainer at level 4, so at level 6 we learned the two level 4 spells and the two level 6 spells in one visit.

Where Your New Spells Go

New spells land in your Spellbook, sorted into tabs. Ours went under Marksmanship, next to Auto Shot: Arcane Shot, Hunter’s Mark and Serpent Sting, each at Rank 1. Drag a spell from the Spellbook onto an action bar if it is not there already, and it is ready to use.

Other Things Your Trainer Does (and Does Not Do)

Your class trainer is also where you go to reset talents, which our talent reset guide covers. Weapon skills are a different visit, to a weapon master, explained in our weapon skills guide. Professions such as Skinning have trainers of their own.

Hunters have one more milestone ahead: our pet taming guide covers the quest that unlocks your pet. Still deciding what to play? Our best class for new players compares them. And if you are new to the town around your trainer, our Hearthstone guide shows how to make it your home. Every Forever guide we have is on our World of Warcraft hub.
