Gears of War E-Day: How to Use the Blast Charge

A soldier with a Lancer rifle on his back faces a towering spider-like Locust creature glowing red between burning city buildings and wrecked cars

The Blast Charge in Gears of War: E-Day is an explosive you deliver into the Corpser’s hole during the Corpser Invasion Event in Horde Siege. Shoot the Corpser until it drops a health segment and burrows, carry a Blast Charge to the edge of its hole, and press your interact button when the prompt appears: you never equip it or throw it like a grenade.

That last part is why so many players get stuck. Below we cover where the charges spawn, the full step-by-step for the Corpser fight, why the prompt sometimes will not show, and the separate Imulsion Blast Charge collectible in the Campaign, which has nothing to do with Horde Siege. Everything is verified against official patch notes and The Coalition’s multiplayer deep dive for Gears of War: E-Day, as of the November 6 patch.

What the Blast Charge Is

Horde Siege drops Invasion Events into a match: boss-scale Locust such as a Corpser “erupting out of the ground” or a Brumak arrive, every squad on the map is notified, and a temporary modifier hits everyone, such as blocked extractions or disabled Supply Caches. The Coalition says these fights are best taken on “when all three squads are working together,” and any squad that joins gets a share of the rewards.

The Corpser is the one with a built-in mechanic. Bullets alone will not finish it: the Blast Charges spawned around it are how you hurt it while it hides underground. The Coalition’s own launch notes name them, fixing an issue “causing blast charges delivered during the Corpser Invasion Event to not register,” so the word to remember is delivered. You carry a charge to the hole and drop it in.

If you have not played Horde Siege yet, our multiplayer and Horde guide explains squads, Energy and extraction first.

Step-by-Step: How to Use a Blast Charge on the Corpser

  1. Join the Invasion. When the Corpser Invasion starts, head for its marker. Bringing your whole squad, and ideally the other two, makes every later step easier.
  2. Shoot the Corpser until it loses a health segment. Its health bar is split into segments. Once you knock one off, it retreats into its hole for a short time.
  3. Pick up a Blast Charge. Charges spawn near the Corpser. They are usually marked on screen; if you cannot see one, sweep the area around the fight.
  4. Carry it to the edge of the hole. Walk right up to the rim. The prompt only appears when you are close and the Corpser is fully underground.
  5. Press the interact prompt. This drops the charge into the hole. It is the same contextual interact you use on the rest of the map, not your grenade or equipment button.
  6. Back away immediately. The Corpser comes back up after the blast, and its emergence and ground pound can catch anyone standing on the rim. Its shockwave can be jumped over with E-Day’s new jump.
  7. Repeat. Shoot it down a segment, deliver another charge, and keep the cycle going until it dies.

Why the Blast Charge Prompt Is Not Showing

  • The Corpser is still above ground. Weapons push the fight into the burrow phase; the charge only works after it. Keep shooting until it fully retreats.
  • You are too far from the hole. Get right to the edge, not just near the crater.
  • You are pressing the wrong button. There is no throw button for a Blast Charge. Look for the on-screen interact prompt at the hole.

If charges vanished into the hole without counting during the beta, that was a known bug: The Coalition fixed blast charges that did not register before launch. Its October 14 patch also fixed a Corpser that could become unkillable during an Invasion Event, so update the game before blaming yourself.

Tips for a Faster Corpser Kill

  • Split the jobs. One or two players keep damage on the Corpser while one player stands by a charge, ready to run it to the hole the moment it burrows.
  • Clear the support units. Invasion bosses arrive with their own supporting Locust. A carrier who gets downed on the way to the hole wastes the whole burrow window.
  • Bring a reviver. The Medic’s Stim Vaporizer heals and revives any Gear in range, including players from other squads. Our Horde Siege class guide covers when to pick it.
  • Use heavy damage for the segment phases. Our best weapons guide ranks what hits hardest, and turrets bought with Energy can be ripped off their mounts as heavy weapons.
  • Weigh the payout. The Coalition cut the Weapon Parts paid for taking part in Invasions before launch, but Invasions still pay into the shared rewards, and an active Invasion’s modifier can block extraction until it is dealt with.

The Imulsion Blast Charge Collectible (Campaign)

Searching “blast charge” also turns up a Campaign item with a similar name. The Imulsion Blast Charge is a collectible in Act 4, Chapter 3 (Tough as Nails), and it is not something you use in combat.

To get it, start the Special Cargo secondary objective from the workers marked on your map in the rail yard. Clear the Locust, reach the cargo container, and enter the code you hear over the radio to open it. The Imulsion Blast Charge is inside. It counts toward the Memories From E-Day achievement for finding every collectible; our achievement list has the rest, and our weapon mods guide explains the mods secondary objectives pay out.

The Campaign’s own Corpser fight in Act 3 does not use Blast Charges.
