For most players, the best first Horde Siege class in Gears of War: E-Day is the Medic: its Stim Vaporizer heals and revives every Gear in range, including downed players from other squads, and keeping people alive is what decides whether a squad extracts. If you already have a reliable healer, Assault is the strongest all-rounder, and its Sonic Disruptor is built for the objective-defense moments where missions fail.
That is our recommendation from The Coalition’s official class descriptions and mission rules in its multiplayer deep dive for Gears of War: E-Day, verified as of September 30, 2026. Balance can change with launch patches, and The Coalition itself says there is “no right way” to build a squad, so treat this as a starting point, not a tier list.
The Four Classes at a Glance
Every class has its own starting loadout, a passive combat bonus, a level track and a piece of Tactical Gear on a cooldown:
| Class | Role | Tactical Gear | Passive bonus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assault | Mid-range, flexible | Sonic Disruptor: stuns waves of incoming enemies | Extra damage while in cover |
| Breacher | Close-range frontline | Adrenaline Injector: refills health and reduces damage taken | Resistance to status effects and melee damage |
| Marksman | Long-range precision | Pulse Drone: tags Locust for your whole squad | Extra damage on critical hits |
| Medic | Mid-range support | Stim Vaporizer: heals and revives any Gear in range | Faster health regeneration |
Any character skin works with any class, so pick on playstyle alone. More classes arrive with seasonal updates, per The Coalition.
Why Medic Is the Safest First Pick
Horde Siege punishes deaths harder than classic Horde. A killed player drops COG tags that a squadmate has to carry to a Supply Cache, and if your whole squad goes down you lose a Squad Life. Run out and the mission fails with only partial XP, and you lose any Weapon Parts you had not extracted with.
The Medic cuts straight through that. The Stim Vaporizer heals and revives downed (DBNO) Gears in range, so fewer of them bleed out into tags someone has to carry across the map, and it works on players from other squads too. E-Day’s new Downs Counter shows how many downs you have left before the next one kills you outright, which tells a Medic who needs help first. With three squads sharing each map, a Medic who picks up strangers during an Invasion Event helps everyone finish. Two achievements reward it: Down, but Not Dead (250 Stim Vaporizer revives) and Who Loves Ya, Baby? (20 revives of players from other squads).
When Each Other Class Is Best
Assault is the pick for Defend, Calibrate and Horde objectives, where waves pile onto a single spot. Stun the wave, then execute stunned enemies: that is also the route to the Turn It Up to 11 achievement (50 executions of stunned enemies). The in-cover damage bonus suits Gears’ core loop, which makes Assault the easiest class to be good with.
Breacher is for Secure objectives and for pushing into Locust positions. The Adrenaline Injector refills health and cuts damage, which buys time to close distance with a Gnasher. Status resistance helps against enemies such as the Armored Wretch, whose scream The Coalition says can disorient you and limit your actions.
Marksman pays off on Horde Siege’s long city sightlines. The Pulse Drone tags enemies for the whole squad, which keeps flanks from surprising you, and critical-hit damage rewards headshots. It is the weakest pick if nobody else covers close range.
Squad Compositions That Work
The Coalition’s own line is that four Breachers is fine if that is what you want. For public matchmaking, though, these are the balances we would aim for:
- Standard: Medic, Assault, Breacher, Marksman. One of each covers healing, crowd control, pushes and spotting.
- Objective defense (Horde and Defend missions): Medic, two Assault, Marksman. Double stuns make the late waves manageable.
- Fast Blitz runs: Medic, two Breacher, Assault. Short missions reward pushing objectives quickly.
Whatever the lineup, remember that Poisons make your squad’s Locust stronger after each main-objective boss wave. Clear secondary objectives early for Energy and Squad Perks, before the enemy scaling kicks in.
How Class Progression Works
Each class levels separately to 30 at launch. Levels unlock loadout weapons, equipment, Armor Mods, Tactical Gear Mods (shorter cooldowns, bigger range, extra effects) and Weapon Mods, and key milestones raise the class’s base health and damage. Difficulty is tied to class level: The Coalition recommends Infantry for levels 10 to 20, Commander for 20 to 30 and Allfather for max-level classes only, so switching to a fresh class means dropping back a difficulty.
Weapon customization is shared: mod a Prototype Lancer on Assault and the same mods follow it to your Medic. That makes switching classes cheaper than it looks. Our multiplayer and Horde guide covers missions and difficulty in full, and our controller settings guide has the Horde-specific options such as enemy health bars and Proximity Chat. Horde Siege co-op basics are in our co-op guide, and every guide is on the Gears of War: E-Day hub.
