No, you cannot save the Lone Wolf in Gears of War: E-Day. The lone Gear holding out in an apartment block during Act 2 dies whatever you do: helping him fight off the Locust is what completes the Lone Wolf secondary objective, and afterward you collect his COG tags from his body.
So if he died on your run, you did not fail anything. Below we cover where Lone Wolf starts, how to complete it, what it rewards, the collectible that comes with it, and what to do if the objective will not finish. It stays light on story: nothing here goes beyond the side mission itself.
Where the Lone Wolf Secondary Objective Is
Lone Wolf is in Act 2, Chapter 2 (Hold the Line), the chapter where Gears of War: E-Day opens up a district of Kalona for you to explore. It sits in an apartment building beside Monroe Library.
It is a late addition to the chapter. Lone Wolf becomes available once you reach the main objective Support Cpl. Harris at the Hotel, after you have been through the Octus Tribunal Muster Point. As you get close, you will hear a lone soldier shouting over the gunfire from the apartment block. That is your cue.
If you reach this part of the chapter, you have already passed the Bank of Tyrus; our Bank of Tyrus guide covers the collectible and Hard Case in its vault if you missed them.
How to Complete Lone Wolf
- Head to the apartment building next to the library once Support Cpl. Harris at the Hotel is your objective.
- Go inside and start the secondary objective.
- Make your way up to the upper floors, where the lone Gear is fighting.
- Fight off the Locust attacking his position.
- Wait for the objective to complete. The Lone Wolf completion notice appears once the attack is over.
- Find his COG tags. Take them from his body once the fight is over.
Can You Keep Him Alive?
No. The lone Gear’s death is part of the side mission, not a fail state. Completing Lone Wolf and collecting his tags is the intended ending. You lose nothing by it: the objective still counts as complete and still pays its rewards.
That fits the Campaign’s tone. Xbox’s launch tips post says side missions “let you support other squads, help civilians, and otherwise contribute to saving the city,” and that they offer “additional insight into the wider story.” Not every one of them ends well.
Lone Wolf Rewards and Collectible
| Reward | Type |
|---|---|
| Deep Pockets | Armor Mod |
| Full Metal Jacket | Hammerburst Weapon Mod |
| Sergeant Elijah Adams’ COG Tags | Collectible |
The mods are yours once the objective completes, and like other Campaign rewards they are equipped at a Supply Cache. Our weapon mods guide explains how mods work, and our best weapons guide covers the Hammerburst.
Lone Wolf also counts toward two achievements: Side Piece, for completing all Secondary Objectives in the Campaign, and Memories From E-Day, for finding all Collectibles, since the COG tags are one of them. Our achievement list has the rest.
If Lone Wolf Will Not Complete or Track
- Update the game. The Coalition’s October 14 patch fixed “multiple issues causing parts of War Journal and Achievement progress not to track,” and fixed progress not being tracked in co-op sessions. Its November 2 update then fixed missing War Journal entries and completed achievements, which The Coalition says are granted the next time you sign in.
- Reload a checkpoint. The Coalition’s launch notes recommend reloading a checkpoint if you get blocked at an encounter or objective.
- Replay the mission. You can start a new campaign from a completed mission and replay it, the workaround The Coalition gives for rewards that did not unlock. Sign in first, though, so the November 2 fix can grant what it covers, then check which collectibles the game still shows as missing.
- Check after joining a friend. The Coalition notes that players joining a lobby working through an existing save receive all prior secondary objective and Hard Case progress in the War Journal. Our co-op guide covers how joining works.
Our campaign length guide covers how much of the story is left, and every guide is on our Gears of War: E-Day hub.
