Gears of War: E-Day early access starts on Thursday, October 1, 2026 at 8am PT (11am ET, 4pm BST, 15:00 UTC) for Premium Edition owners, and the worldwide launch follows on Tuesday, October 6 at the same time. Xbox Wire gives one global time for both, so the game unlocks at the same moment everywhere instead of rolling out at midnight region by region.
Below you will find both times converted for every major region, when pre-install opens, and the four ways to play before October 6. This guide covers the launch on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Steam, verified against The Coalition’s gone gold announcement on Xbox Wire as of September 28, 2026. Xbox Wire lists both unlocks at 8am Pacific (15:00 UTC). We converted that official time for each region below, accounting for daylight saving. Sydney’s clocks move forward on October 4, between the two dates.

For players in Japan, Australia and New Zealand, both unlocks land after midnight, so the calendar date is one day later than in the US and Europe.
When Pre-Install Opens
Per Xbox Wire, pre-install begins Tuesday, September 29 at 8am PT (15:00 UTC) on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Steam. That covers both pre-order buyers and Game Pass members, so everyone can have the game downloaded before their unlock time.
- Xbox Series X|S: download from the game’s page in the Store, or from the Game Pass section if you are a member.
- Xbox app on PC: the same, from the game’s store or Game Pass page in the app.
- Steam: the pre-load appears in your library once you have pre-purchased either edition on the Steam store page.
On PC, clear space first. The Steam listing asks for 115 GB, and it must be on an SSD: The Coalition’s beta notes warn that mechanical hard drives “are not supported” and can cause severe loading problems, stuttering and crashes. Our Steam and PC guide has the full requirements.
How to Play Early
There are four ways to play before the worldwide launch.
- Buy the Premium Edition ($99.99). It includes up to five days of early access from October 1, on Xbox, the Xbox app and Steam. Steam’s listing says the Premium Edition lets you play “starting 5 days ahead of full release.”
- Buy the Premium Edition Upgrade ($30) on the Xbox store. If you already own the Standard Edition, this adds the early access and the rest of the Premium content. Its store fine print says it requires the base game or a Game Pass Ultimate membership, so Ultimate members can use it to start early without buying the game.
- Buy the Collector’s Edition ($299.99). It includes the Premium Edition, so it also starts October 1. The official Xbox Game Studios Shop listing shows it as sold out as of September 28.
- Attend the free Los Angeles event. On September 30, from 3pm to 10pm PT at Hollywood and Vine, Xbox is letting the public play before early access starts. It is 18+ only and limited to the first 500 guests, with the line opening at noon. Our report on the LA event has the full details.

What Does Not Get You In Early
- Game Pass on its own. Xbox Wire is explicit: “Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members can join the fight starting October 6.” Membership covers the game, not the head start.
- A Standard Edition pre-order. It gets you the Exfil Dom skin and Exfil weapon skin set, and pre-install, but you play on October 6.
- Having played the open beta. The beta ran in August and is over. Per The Coalition’s open beta FAQ, the beta player title, medal and challenge rewards carry over to launch, but class progression and player level were reset.
Before You Hit Play
- Online play on Xbox needs a subscription. The official fine print says online campaign co-op, Horde Siege and Versus require “a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer,” which the open beta FAQ puts at Game Pass Essential or higher. Our co-op guide covers the details.
- Update your graphics drivers on PC. During the beta, the game would not launch on NVIDIA drivers older than 610.74, and The Coalition listed AMD 26.7.1 and Intel 101.8864 as the minimums. Check the final requirements on launch day.
