When the Auction House in World of Warcraft: Forever is not working, it is almost always one of five things: an “Internal Auction Error” when you post or buy, the “Auction House is closed” message during a service problem, a listing that vanishes as you try to buy it, an account hold that restricts trading, or a deposit that makes a listing not worth posting. Each has its own fix, and only one of them means something is wrong with your account.
Below we match the message you see to its cause and fix. Blizzard’s known issues list, last updated November 5, does not include the Auction House, and its November 6 hotfixes do not change it, so for now the fixes below are the ones on your side. Checked November 7, three days after launch.
Find Your Problem
| What you see | Most likely cause | First thing to try |
|---|---|---|
| “Internal Auction Error” when posting | A failed listing at that price | Close the window, reopen, try a different price |
| “Internal Auction Error” or “Item not found” when buying | The listing was already bought or removed | Search again and buy from the refreshed list |
| “The Auction House is closed at the moment. Please try again later” | The auction service is down for your ruleset | Wait, then check Blizzard’s status channels |
| You cannot use the Auction House, mail or trade at all | A Temporary Economy Hold on your account | Wait for Blizzard’s review |
| Posting costs more than the item sells for | The minimum deposit | Sell to a vendor or post bigger stacks |
Internal Auction Error When Posting
This is the error most people hit in launch week. It appears after you set a price and click to post, and the item stays in your bags. Work through these in order:
- Close the Auction House and open it again. Then retry the same listing.
- Try a different price. If the error appears only when you price under the current lowest listing, post at that price instead and see whether it goes through.
- Post one item, then the rest. If a stack or a batch fails, a single listing tells you whether the problem is the item or the batch.
- Turn off auction addons and reload. An auction addon that posts for you can fail where the default window works. Disable it from the AddOns button at character select, or type
/reloadafter turning it off, and try the plain Auction House window. - Try again later. If every listing fails for everyone in your guild at once, the service is struggling, and the next section applies.
If an addon was the cause, update it before turning it back on. Our best addons guide links each one’s official WoW Forever download, and our guide to installing addons covers updating them.
Errors When Buying
If you click Buyout and get “Item not found”, “Internal Auction Error” or a message that the item is no longer available, someone else got there first or the seller pulled it. Busy capitals at launch move fast.
- Search again to refresh the list, then buy from the new results.
- Do not keep clicking the same row. It is a listing that no longer exists.
- Check your mail if gold left your bags. Auction purchases and refunds arrive by mail; open your mailbox before assuming anything was lost.
“The Auction House Is Closed at the Moment”
That message means the auction service is unavailable, not that you did something wrong. It showed up during the WoW Forever beta for players on a single realm while everything else worked, so it can hit one ruleset and not another.
- Wait a few minutes and talk to the auctioneer again.
- Check whether the game itself is having trouble. Our guide to checking whether WoW Forever’s servers are down shows where Blizzard posts outages and maintenance.
- Try another character on the same ruleset. If the message follows you, the problem is the service, not the character, and waiting is the fix.
Blocked From the Auction House, Mail and Trade
If the Auction House will not work and neither will trading or the mailbox, your account may be under a Temporary Economy Hold. Blizzard’s post on the holds says an account suspected of real-money gold trading “will have restricted use of trade, mail, guild banks and the Auction House while this economic hold is in place.”
Blizzard says holds that turn out to be false alarms are removed automatically and leave no permanent strike. Our guide to buying gold explains what triggers them, including gold from strangers, which is the easiest way to end up with one by accident. If someone you do not know sends you gold for nothing, decline it.
The Deposit Problem
This is not a bug report so much as a launch rule: every listing costs a deposit of at least 1 silver, whatever the item is worth, and you get it back only if the item sells. For a single linen cloth or one low-level fish, the deposit costs more than the sale makes.
- Bundle cheap items into a bigger stack so one deposit covers more.
- Sell low-value items to a vendor instead.
- List what is worth listing: materials other players need, enchanting materials and crafted gear. Our guides to how professions work and disenchanting cover what sells.
Blizzard has not announced a change to the deposit in its hotfix notes as of November 7. If that changes, we will update this guide.
Things That Are Working as Intended
- You cannot see another ruleset’s listings. Blizzard kept auction houses and trade separate between rulesets at launch; our guide to grouping across rulesets covers what else stays apart.
- You cannot buy with real money. There is no WoW Token in WoW Forever.
How to Report It
If an error keeps happening after the fixes above, report it from the game menu’s support options so Blizzard gets your ruleset and character details with it. The WoW Forever forums are where Blizzard posts what it has acknowledged. For the Auction House in each capital, see our guide to where the Auction House is, and every WoW Forever guide we have is on our World of Warcraft hub.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the WoW Forever Auction House say Internal Auction Error? A listing or purchase failed. Close and reopen the window, try a different price when posting, and search again when buying.
Why is the Auction House closed in WoW Forever? The auction service is down for your ruleset. Wait a few minutes and check Blizzard’s outage posts.
Is the WoW Forever Auction House down for everyone? Not usually. Most errors are one listing or one purchase. If no one in your guild can use it, the service is down.
Why can’t I use the Auction House, mail or trade? Your account may be under a Temporary Economy Hold while Blizzard investigates gold trading. False alarms are removed automatically.
Has Blizzard fixed the Auction House? Blizzard has not listed an Auction House fix in its hotfix notes as of November 7.
